This video in particular brings back some sweet memories. Gene and I were in Salt Pond several times - the last time on our way back from Florida in May 2009. BI is a very special place and I hope to get back there soon.

It was interesting to hear you compare sailing. It reminded me of my pilot/flying friends who comment that they miss the days of flying piper cubs because of the "feel" as they board their 747's...

I love the videos, Drake and Monique. I especially like the actual sailing segments that have both problems and successes. And believe it or not, I really like the episodes that happen at a boat yard on the hard, renovating, repairing or general maintenance. I have learned so much since I've been watching; you explain what and why you are doing something, and you speak your thoughts and feelings. I just became a subscriber to your videos on Patreon, and that makes me feel really good.

Flounder3000 Thanks so much for the encouragement. We have over 800 hours of video footage to edit through and we are continuing to film as well. In real time we are about to push off from Ireland to sail back to Faroe, Iceland and Greenland. We are trying to finish as many episodes as we can before we push off. When we switch modes from full time editing back to voyaging and filming we will try to publish as much as we can as we go.

Brings backs memories. Although my car gave me great freedom at age 16. My Eli sailing dingy gave my first taste of freedom at 12. Hours spent seated across the boat with feet propped up on one side and my head on the other.

Drake and Mo, thanks so much for sharing your journeys on beautiful Paragon! New subscriber, first time commentor on your channel. I am power bingeing through these videos every waking moment for the last few days. Totally hooked! I feel like I am right there with you. Mo, as a fellow chronic back pain sufferer, I am curious if you have ever experimented with resting in a hammock. When adjusted properly, I think it could bring enormous relief from your pain and possibly your sea sickness, too. Hope you are both well! Thank you again, from another "Mo" =o)

"Hey Drake, what time is it?" "Well, let me explain to you how a watch is made..." I was fairly certain Monique was going to toss your chatty butt overboard when she was trying to get you to just tell her the commands for tacking. 😄 I kid. Great video as always! I hope you show a little about the wood stove in future videos. Always love a wood stove on a boat. They make an already cozy and inviting place ten times more so.

Drake-n-Mo; Back in the early '90s, just before the internet came into being, I was in the Cape Coral Library and falling in love with sailing. I borrowed a VHS videotape of Steve Colgate teaching sailing near Captiva Island in a Dutch built Soling. He used the terms "Ready-about? Ready! Hard-a-lee!" and "Prepare-to-jibe! Bearing-away! Jibe-ho!" when teaching students how to communicate during a tack and jibe. You guys should try it! Makes ya feel kinda like a pirate out on the rolling sea. Arrrghhh!

Drake, I spent my younger years in Hawaii sailing after school and racing on the weekends. Spent a lot of time on the water. I have many a fond memory of that and your videos bring me back to those days. Just as you said there is nothing like the peace you get on the water. The sounds of the water splashing up and the wind in your sails.

swalemouth Hi swalemouth, We filmed over 800 hours of footage since this video was filmed. At the same time that we are editing this footage we are also continuing to film. In realtime we are just about to push off from Ireland to sail back to Faroe, Iceland, and Greenland. Please understand that it's enormously time consuming and expensive to produce these videos, and it's especially difficult to edit while we are continuing to voyage and film at the same time. If you would really like to help us to produce more content then consider supporting these productions at patreon.com/DrakeParagon.

Very interesting idea... I hadn't considered that a small sailing dinghy could be just as useful as a rowed dinghy to get around. I'll have to remember that. I'm on a leeeeeeetle Coronado 15 as my boat, and in the 5yr plan is an upgrade to a ~26' MacGregor for land locked lake sailing. The 10yr plan has an eventual trip to someplace warm with the whole family (wife + 3 kids). We can all fit in the Coronado, but this 800lb Coronado seems a bit too much for a dinghy for a 30-40' boat. May be if it is always towed instead of stowed on deck???

Excellent video as always! Are you back in Oriental? I live just up the road from Coinjock... I plan to go chat with Terry Miles owner of the Midway Marina & Hotel... To see about getting start in sailing... Finall... Nicest guy in the world.

Steve Bogle Hi Steve, Tuesday, March 31, 2014 We are in Ireland and preparing to sail back to Faroe, Iceland and Greenland of the Summer. But I think about Oriental all the time. Where is the Midway Marina & Hotel? How are they going to help you get into sailing? Good luck!
@dvsteve719 жыл бұрын
DrakeParagon's Real Cruising Life Midway is in Coinjock. If you take the ICW up from Oriental to Norfolk and take the eastern route you come into Coinjock. The ICW is pretty here barren except for a little 1/2 mile long development that has 2 very small Marinas on both sides. I am not sure if you traveled this route or the western route that takes you through the Dismal Swamp. Anyway... Terry has offered to help me find a nice starter boat and will allow me to dock there at a discount.

Question on your gear .... What binoculars do I see you using? Can you comment on details of what you use and why? Likes vs. dislikes? Obviously you use them a lot and I'm interested in what makes a good pair of sailing binoculars. Thanks. Love your videos.
@drakeParagon9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tony, Most of the time I use a pair of 7 x 50 binoculars, like these Nikon's www.nikon.com/products/sportoptics/lineup/binoculars/marine/wp_10x50/index.htm We have a pair of Fujinon 14x40 image stabilized waterproof and fog proof binoculars which I only use to see things that are extremely far away. The battery powered image stabilization really helps. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/206833-USA/Fujinon_7511440_14x40_TS1440_Techno_Stabi_Image.html I like that they are waterproof, fogproof, and are easy to focus. I just wish they had better rubber covers for the lenses to keep them clean when you're not using them.

Just my 2 cents: The line c0ntrolling the sail seems too complicated for a simple boat.why not a simple swivel attachment point located mid stern connecting to pully on boom? KISS as they say

Not sure you want to burn drift wood in your stove. Maybe the salts will accelerate the corrosion?
@drakeParagon9 жыл бұрын
Jerry English Our stove is coated with an enamel and I haven't noticed any rust, but even so I wouldn't be too concerned. We love burning just about any kind of non treated wood we can find anywhere. Also here in Ireland we're burning a lot of peat as well.

LOL, "......you can sail! Yes, can you row?" Marital type sailing manoeuvres explained: He at helm = make sure she understands and blesses the manoeuvere. If any loss of she-grace or she-dryness should occur, you're in the pooh Bucko! She at helm: No warning needed. The turn will either be to the left or to the other left. If you loved her, you would know which one she meant. If any loss of she-grace or she-dryness should occur, you're in the pooh Bucko! Note: should any she-not in the boatness occur, then initially consider sailing really fast to your bolthole (every sailor should have one at any given time). Many a boat has been saved by having a convenient bolthole. Alternatively, and as a last resort,think about a realistic price and compulsive wording for your boat-for-sale advertisement.....

Joshua Jones Hi Joshua, I'm so sorry. I tried to have the next episode ready in time, but there's still some editing I want to finish. It will be a couple more days. I had originally planned out 48 episodes for season 2. I wanted the season finale episode to be of us pushing off from Boston for our first big offshore sail to Nova Scotia. But the editing of these episodes has taken much more time than I had originally thought it would. And we've also had much less time available for editing because of the freelance jobs I've had to take on to replenish our savings. I really regret that I won't be able to finish the editing of Season 2 on schedule. But with the help of our Patrons I promise that I will finish it as soon as I can and that it will be a great story. We are currently in Ireland and switching modes from trying to spend most of our time editing video over the winter, to getting back to voyaging and filming full time. In 1 week from now we will detach from our marina slip and move out to an anchorage. 2 weeks later we will start sailing up the west coast of Ireland, and on June 1st we will look for a weather window to sail directly to Iceland - a huge sail. It's now critical for me to spend most of my time making sure that Paragon is ready for this voyage. I have an idea for publishing a new type of video while we will be voyaging over the next months. What do you think of this? Once every week or two I would post a video where I just talk about what's currently going on and also answer all of your questions, especially any questions from our Patrons. Joshua I actually got the idea for doing this from watching your videos. Kind of like my own self-therapy where I would just talk about what's currently going on in real time. Maybe I could call it "DrakeParagon: Ask Me Anything" or "DrakeParagon: Realtime Update" or "Ask Monique and Drake"... What do you think? If you like the idea then do you have anything in particular that you'd like to me talk about in the first one? Any questions about anything at all? Maybe we could get one out the door before we push off from the marina.
