Chapter Five, Feeling Alive! Welcome back to this wildly dramatised portrayal of what it's like thru hiking Te Araroa; the 3,000km trail of Aotearoa, New Zealand. We may or may not have watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty on our day off. Also, you’ll notice I say 2020 many times... It was no longer 2020.

Te Reo Māori words:
Mana: an extraordinary power, essence or presence
Manaakitanga: to extend Aroha (love and compassion) to others
Hīkoi: to walk. The term usually implies a long journey taking many days or weeks.
Kaitiaki: a person, group or being that acts as a carer, guardian, protector and conserver.

The team at Taumarunui Canoe Hire are amazing. I was lucky enough to Canoe the Whanganui River last year and the service and training they provided was excellent. Thanks to Karen, Ron and their family for an amazing time. Oh, not to forget the amazing Chocolate Cup Cake you get at the end!

Omg I’m struggling to put into the words how this episode made me feel. My heart is beating like a little butterfly in inhalation of the highs and lows of such a an incredible journey. You conveyed so well the epicness, the beauty, the ‘go get em’, the perseverance. And the positivity that you have to take from the physical and emotional battle of an incredible adventure like this is so well laid across. Anyway I feel like I’m waffling but to say this is inspiring is an understatement. Can’t wait for the next episode.

Goosebumbs again! Thank you for putting all the work into this kind of storytelling. People who have never done long distance travelling wont be able to understand how difficult it is not to focus on problems on trail, but on the beauty which is little hidden. You absolutely master that.

When I was young I would get lost in books, losing awareness of everything around me. I feel the same watching your videos, I emerge 20 minutes later from the beautiful world you capture. Thank you for the enormous effort these videos must take.

Hi Elina, i just really love how you tell your story of walking the Te Araroa, but also tell the story of the people around the TA. And while you often read or hear, that the North Island part is less beautifull and interesting, i really like how you show the beauty of it; that it is interesting in its own right. You really have inspired me, and i hope i will be able to walk the TA some day.

Kia ora Elina (Tip Tap). To have watched the video (& all your past ones), and be reminded of those who you met along the way and who we had the opportunity to meet, when they also came to stay with us, at Te Whare Kereru, in Whanganui. The talent which you display in your editing and composition is wonderful to watch, follow, and appreciate. Thank you for showing us in such light. It was an honour to have you, and your other tribespeople stay, which the group of others. We had such a houseful, and it was our pleasure to host you all, and to allow us to be your kaitiaki, as you continued your walk. All the best with whatever you do, and wherever your long pathway will take you. Take care. Noho haumaru. Arohanui. Rob & George, Whanganui. 🫂

how you perceive a video always depends on your own mood. with the first chapters i had the impression that you were still searching and developing. and i liked being part of it. I perceived this chapter very differently. it felt much more evolved and mature yet full of lightness. Pictures of hiking, conversations, landscapes, the characters of the people, music and interviews alternated, playfully intertwined and complemented each other perfectly. It felt like you arrived at te araroa trail and now you know exactly how to tell the story... and I like it even more... but maybe it's just my perception... anyway... keep it up ....

This is such a great video and the nature, cicadas, accents and genuine people make me so homesick. I resented living in NZ during my teen years especially and never realised why it is such an amazing place until I’d been away for a while. It is so green and peaceful and unique. Thank you for sharing this ❤️🇳🇿🇬🇧

Elina, I don't comment often, but I so appreciate your vlogging style and the way you put together a video with just the right music, wonderful camera work, and thoughtful narration. I have a teeny tiny KZbin channel chronicling my section hikes of the Appalachian Trail, and while I was hiking this weekend, I was inspired by you to pay more attention to little details as I captured my experiences. I have neither the energy nor the talent to pursue a higher level of content creation, but capture my hikes for the dreaded day when I can no longer be outdoors. I just wanted to thank you for inspiring this old Grandma from the U.S.

I was confused for a moment...this is a new vid with older footage. I was taken aback when you said your mom was in hospital for treatment. It still makes me sad. I've also lost my mom....it never doesn't make me sad when I'm alone. I miss her. I hope that you are finding peace and a settled place where you can enjoy the eternity that in fact your mother had...in your heart. It never dulls. Love yourself like you wish you could love the ones' you've lost. Peace...I'll finish the video later

Just gorgeous. There was so much emotion in this chapter. I recently ventured out with a group of traveler friends (we're all 'stuck here' from different countries... are you really stuck after 2 years...) to canoe the 5 day Whanganui River Journey. I was patiently waiting for this edit. You've captured the magic, calm, and total presence that the river wraps around you once you're on its path.
