I watched a video of the making of this game (by PontyPants himself), and I thought it was hilarious that the characters arms in this game are each like 7 feet long, but the forced perspective of the camera gives the illusion that his arms are normal length and close to the objects he's climbing. You can see in the shadows that his arms are HUGE.

It was probably to get over obstacles instead of constantly getting stuck on the cliff geometry. If you have the character slightly farther away and use forced perspective (no depth), then the arms can get around objects while still looking mostly normal.@@presentlycrescent
