Well , what a modern Dad . My Dad would tell me to get out of the car and push . I remember trying to push a 1967 Humber Sceptre up hill during a snow storm. It does n 't take a lot to upset a rear wheel drive vehicle in bad weather. Pushing cars , shovelling coal , the smell of paraffin , and standing on the passenger seat with your head out of the sun roof . What sort of childhood do they have now ?

Hey what did I say about the breather hose ? the hose was disconnected from the top cover of the air filter housing ! also DO NOT disconnect ANYTHING AT ALL and put the air filter cover back on and make sure all hoses are connected. Also check there is no leaking vacuum hose to the vacuum advance unit, you can check the vacuum advance diaphram by pulling the thin pipe off the inlet manifold !! and then suck through it, to see if it pulls the diaphram on the dizzy, if it does not !! it then means you have a perished vacuum advance unit, BUT it can still work when the pipe is connected back on the inlet manifold, as this only happens if the diaphram is very slightly perished because of the engines strong suction. And finally... you should ONLY adjust the mixture when the engine is running at idle WITH THE CHOKE FULLY OFF after the engine is FULLY warmed up. It looks like you have a Zenith or Stromberg CD3 carb by adjusting the mixture from the dashpot damper, also Stromberg have it at the bottom on the float chamber bowl, that's the CD, CDS and CD2S but Stromberg CD3 is on top, I was not sure which one you had. But there is a special tool to keep the needle valve central as it screws in the damper thread and you put the Allen key in the centre of it, I use to have one but lost it a few years back otherwise I would of sent it to you. REMEMBER you cannot disconnect anything !! because when you reconnect it will throw the mixture right off !! On a positive note...there is nothing wrong with that engine !! it is good !!! I know for a fact it should run sweet at 850rpm, and yes the gearbox does let it down. The Magnum slant fours also had terrible gearbox's but Vauxhall are well known for bad gearbox's. Anyway all the best and keep on rocking !! 👍😀
@RetroRebuild Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, I had the breather disconnected because I had the airbox open while I was lifting piston to listen for engine revs anyway so it didn't matter about breather I've got the special tool for adjusting needle that's what I was using mate, I'm going to remove carb to set butterfly valve clearance 👍

The headlining on vauxhalls from this era had metal rods, which were fed through the lining and located into holes above the doors. Headlining in the astras, cavaliers, calibras etc were glued onto a fibre backing plate......through time the glue disintegrated and the top layer drops off the backing. Why vx changed this design I'll never know.

I think if you look at the workshop manual or the factory shop manual there is a rough guide to getting the mixture ok by warming up to temp then take the airbox off and with a small screwdriver and lift the piston a little,can't remember which way it goes but if it dies then picks up it needs to be richenned up or weakened can't remember which way but you can get it pretty close using that method.
@stevehill4615 Жыл бұрын
That's about right, on SU's you have a lift pin and the setting is you momentarily lift the piston, if the revs die it's too lean and if the revs majorly pick up it's rich (slight increase is acceptable for good acceleration).
