To answer a question I've seen a few times before, the creature Mim transforms into in the book is called an "aullay,." I'm not even sure if I pronounced it correctly, to be honest. My apologies for any confusion.

Agreed with every word. However I’ve got to admit as a child watching the movie, I always had a sneaking suspicion that Mim was actually the transformed embodiment of the wolf, pike , and hawk that eventually drove poor wort to to her house and therefore trap! You know given how powerful and sneaky she is, and although she maybe mad one should Never underestimate her

Madam Mim is one of my favourite underrated Disney villains, I liked her when I was young because she was hilarious and its a pity that the Sword in the Stone world hasn't appeared in a Kingdom Hearts game yet, Madam Mim would be a cool boss fight.
@jordancampbell8597

I think the reason "Sword in the Stone" hasn't appeared yet is that it's implied that Merlin's adventures are already long in the past--even factoring in weird world timeline rules, Sora likely would not be meeting Wart. Pity though--it'd be fun to turn into a bunch of different critters.

Mim would be best utilized as a sort of mad magic teacher of FF villains, sort of chaotic mentor that pops up in original world, mirroring Merlin in Traverse Town. Sadly, KH hasn't been the crossover it used to be for a longest time.

As a child, I encountered Mim in the comics first, and was honestly really surprised when I saw the movie portray her as a straight-up villain. On top of her fun personality and story potential, she always stood out to me as the only recurring female character (aside from grandma duck) who wasn’t either a villain or someone’s girlfriend.

Fun Fact: Ironically, The Sword in the Stone was released the same year as the all-star comedy It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World - in fact only one month apart from each other. In her song, Mim identifies as "Mad" the exact same number of times as is in the film's title ("The Magnificent, MARVELOUS, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Madam Mim!")

LOVED IAMW... that movie actually has quite a few Disney alums or future alums in it including Sterling Holloway (Pooh, Cheshire Cat, Kaa) as the firefighter, Andy Devine (Friar Tuck) as a police dispatcher, Buddy Hacket (Scuttle) as Benji and Mickey Rooney (Todd in Fox and the Hound) it's so funny because in most of these cases they would be in Disney films later but that's honestly all I knew them from when I first watched. Obviously they were really famous before doing it but that's my vantage point anyway LOL

@@abrahamaytemo Yes! And also Terry-Thomas (Sir Hiss) and Stan Freberg (Lambert the Lion) and probably my favorite Nick 'Nicodemus' Stewart as the Migrant Truck Driver, who was the voice actor for Brer Bear in Song of the South and whose voice work would be featured for years on the now defunct Splash Mountain. Maybe it's corny but any time I get the chance to give a shoutout to Nick Stewart, I'm going to, because by proxy he helped to launch so many careers in the black community through his Ebony Showcase Theater (which has since been raised to the ground) and his career has mostly been unsung. He also might have done work on Dumbo but I'm not 100% sure on that one

I often saw Mim as a comical trickster villain, not really that threatening but still threatening enough to take her powers seriously during the Wizard's due. She plays off as the comical trickster until the latter half of the Wizard's due when she finally gets serious. Only to be tricked into getting sick by Merlin turning into a virus that ends up defeating her.

Madam Mim sure is an entertaining character. Interesting note: When she turned into a beautiful woman, she used her apperance, singing and dancing to charm Wart. After that, she turned back into her original form in a not so subtle way. Then you can see that Wart is not comfortable with her. She charmed Wart only to take that away. Which is kinda mean... or should I say mad :D

Can we take a step back and marvel at how well Mim's directing animator Milt Kahl animated her hands? Milt Kahl was really good at not only drawing hands, but animating them too. Look at just about every character he animated and look at their hands. Look at how Mim is very expressive with them. That's not an easy thing even for talented artists.

So this video inspired me to look at some random brazilian Madam Min comics i could find on google at the very least (i'm brazilian), and by what i could find, she seems to mostly fit with what was described here, being flirty and liking weird things. The biggest differences seem to be that she is more cartoonishy evil, is always with Magica De Spell, or Maga Patalójika as she is known here, and interacts more with some characters that are only popular in brazil. One of the covers in the video is for a very interesting book about made-up spells and some more "real" stuff like astrology or the horoscope, presented by her and Magica, from a series of manuals about some disney characters, usually related to something the character is known for.

Being brazilian, Min and Maga Patalójika (Magica de Spell) are almost always together, like best friends or at least partners in magic. One of my favorite comics is one where them both end up in Brazil by accident, and now Jose Carioca and his friend try to get some easy money guiding the tourists. She is dearly remembered, both by her character and her dub here, I recommend checking it out. A thing about her love phantom, she's obsessed with him, but he doesn't love her back, often using her and her magic to escape prison or commit crimes.

I noticed concept art Madam Mim and she reminds me of Cruella who like her in the book was shown as very beautiful but when they were adapted to screen they are depicted as very ugly and goofier. In some ways it makes them stand out in contrast if hey were conveniently beautiful. And said before if Mim was more like Maleficent she would be seen as more like a clone than her own person. Yeah, Reynard the fox has been the character that could be one of the ultimate what could have been villains. It does make me wonder if anyone would love to take on that Chanticleer/Reynard project ever again or due to Rockadoodle being a cult classic guilty pleasure not try to tempt it. I have heard about the Chanticleer/Reynard movie but I never heard about the concept with Reynard being framed for bad crimes. That one actually reminds me of a CGI Reynard movie called "Renny The Fox" in the USA where Reynard is depicted as someone who is a lovable rogue instead of the dick he was in the original tales. In my opinion, if Disney wants to do a Reynard project make him a villain. Although I have a feeling Nick Wilde wouldn't like him since he gives his species a bad name.

It was obvious from the description that this unmade Chanticleer film eventually became Rock-A-Doodle, but the parts about the rooster being mayor and the fox wanting to raid the henhouse remind me of Disney's first adaptation of Chicken Little from the 40s (where the fox won).

B the way, Colin, did you know there are other rejected animals that were originally planned for the Wizard's Duel Scene? They were amazing as they were mind-blowing. But the most surprising animal form I found on Merlin was his dog form. He looked a lot like Tramp, but older and with bigger eyes. What I do love about Mim is that she is so different to the other Disney villainesses. She’s a purely chaotic force that loves anything festering and putrid. I really wish they went with her being the main villain of the story rather than a side plot because I think her purposely interfering with Merlin’s training Arthur to be the new king would’ve been very interesting. Heck, maybe have her be the one who poisoned the previous king cause she wanted to see England be plunged into a new dark age? Make her more of a threat to the narrative whilst still keeping her goofy, manic personality.

A couple years ago I finally got around to reading The Once and Future King by T.H. White which as The Sword in the Stone as the first book in the 4 part series, and it wasn't until after I read the book that the Disney movie made a lot more sense as to why it feels so disjointed and episodic and only at the end does the Sword in the Stone show up because that's how the book is. And to honest, the Disney version gets a couple of points over the book if only because Movie Wart wasn't as obnoxious and bratty as Book Wart could get. The Sword in the Stone isn't the best Disney movie, but it does have a charm to it because it's so laid back and mellow, and yet there is a part of me that wouldn't mind seeing Disney do a remake of this movie because there is a lot of potential to improve and fix the story and explain why does this nobody Wart become King Arthur unlike all the other remakes we've had so far that add nothing or take away from what made the original work.
@Victoria-cm7yh
@Victoria-cm7yh 2 жыл бұрын
In the novel Wart turns out to be the son of Uther Pendragon, the previous king, so this is why he could pull the sword from the stone when nobody else could, because he was the rightful heir by blood. In the movie Arthur's parentage is never really addressed, so it feels more like he was worthy of being king because he was humble and good. For instance, when he pulled the sword from the stone he didn't even know the legend attached to it. He just wanted to get the sword for Kay, and not for his own glory like everyone else was.

Oh, I am loving your useage of 'Villianous' artwork. Got the expansion with Mim a few days ago. Also, there is one interesting thing about Merlin in the film. During an argument with Wart when fate has given the boy a chance to be Kay's squire, he says something to Merlin. I can't remember what exactly, but I believe it was something like 'You know all this stuff about the future, but you don't understand a thing about the present.' While Merlin has the excuse of propehtic visions and time travel, he is still so dead set on those visions that anything that could mess with them are seen as an annoyance. It's something that's kinda funny when you remember one of his lessons through song was to not wait for fate to give you greatness, yet that's more or less what he makes Wart do. As a final point, Wart and Hazel writings (the fan name for the squirrel) is home to some of the most wholesome pieces I've seen.

Mim had a major role in the book "Donald Duck and the Witch Next Door". Though she is not referred to as Mim in this story, we know it is her. Donald's meddling gets him on Mim's bad side and she turns him into a watermelon and a frog.

I think Mim is maybe the most underrated Disney villain. Something I've never seen anyone discuss about The Sword in the Stone is that the battle scene is lifted, nearly shot for shot, from a German film from the 1920's. The Adventures of Prince Achmed was one of the first full length features ever made, it was one of the first color films ever made, and Disney has plundered it thoroughly over the years. You can find it on KZbin as long as you're willing to watch it in chapters. It's great!

For the next Disney Villains Retrospective, I think it would be interesting to talk about the villains in the order they appear in the Jungle Book : Kaa, then King Louie, then Shere Khan. The reason I say this is because of the unique way Shere Khan is presented in this movie: you hear about him from the beginning of the film with the wolves but you don't actually meet him until way later. And this whole time, all the jungle animals express fear when mentioning his name, which adds to his build-up and makes his entry all the more impactful. It's a specific aspect of Shere Khan and it would be cool if you did that as well for his video. Of course, only you get to decide how to write your retrospectives and I only mention this because of how well made they are. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Madam Mim also has a very heated rivalry with Goofy in the comics, as she tries to convince him that she's a real witch. Goofy, of course, thinks she's just a delusional old lady, much to Mim's frustration, who tries to prove her legitimacy to the short-sighted fool with increasingly ridiculous ways. Another character worth noting (get ready because we're now getting to the really deep comic cuts) is the witch Garma from the Wizards of Mickey series (a fantasy epic about Mickey, Donald, and Goofy being powerful sorcerers who fight against all sorts of threats, chief amongst them the Phantom Blot, who's recast as a sort of Voldermort-type power-hungry dark wizard), a Madam Mim-inspired old hag who delights in inflicting pain on others and revels in their misery, even her own teammates (one of them being Magica). What's interesting about her, however, is that unlike Mim, she didn't choose her hideous form. She used to be the wife of a legendary warrior, her beauty and cruelty unparalelled in all the kingdom, but when she tricked her husband into riding into his death by stealing his shield, she became shunned and had to leave, surviving off of the misery of others, until her physical appearance became as monstrous as her soul. But because both her personality and role is similar to that of Mim (I don't know if she was directly inspired), I found her worth mentioning.

I know I said this on the episode covering Fun and Fancy Free (1947), but it bears repeating: I actually have a theory that Mad Madam Mim trained Willie the Giant in magic as a kind of inverse to Merlin training Arthur in using his wits. Think about it: both can shrink, fly up high like the birdies, disappear into atmosphere, and turn into pink animals. In the Kingdom Hearts games we know that Merlin can travel to other worlds, so Mim being on par with him in terms of power should be able to do the same, and it would make thematic sense for Mim to train Willie to focus on the magic and not using his wits, further proving that there are no bad students only bad teachers. Why the comics never explored that idea I'll never know.

I was so surprised when the comic book covers appeared and I managed to read and recognize the titles, lol. I had to genuinely stop for a moment thinking that I had confused the languages so much that I was imagining things. I'm from Brazil, so I recognized the covers in Portuguese, not only that, as I have two comic books of these to this day! Right here on the bookshelf in my room, I read these comics so much when I was little that I can remember what's in each one just picking up and seeing the cover. I wanted to have more with these two, or Magic in particular, I love this villain duck sorceress. But I have mainly the most common Mickey, Donald and friends ones. Oh, and our beloved Zé Carioca, the carioca parrot. I love that damn bird, i guess he being a canon brazilian character of disney interacting with the other North American characters from the comics helps a lot, lol.

The closest thing to an animated villain in the original MARY POPPINS was the team of hunters and their dogs chasing the frightened Irish fox. Bert takes pity on the fox and rescues him, so that technically makes the hunters antagonists to the main characters. The fox also kicks one of the dogs in the face, and we're supposed to remain sympathetic to the fox. So I think that, as far as story is concerned, we can say those are the animated villains of MARY POPPINS.

Much like King Louie and much later Tamatoa, she may not have the longest scene, she may not be a major threatening villain, but she makes an impact with the small time on screen she has. Truly, an underrated villain, and has a great aspect of fun. I prefer her quite a bit to Maleficent. I'd say that Sword in the Stone on the whole is underrated as far as Disney movies go.

I'm German, and the German title of "The Sword in the Stone" is "Die Hexe und der Zauberer", meaning "The Witch and the Wizard". That always confused me as a child, because she is only such a small part of the movie. I remember we had the movie on videotape, my dad had recorded it when it was shown on TV (man, that makes me sound old... I'm in my twenties). I just looked it up on wikipedia, and it's about 20 years ago that dvds became more popular than videotape in Germany... and now dvds are becoming less and less popular, as streaming services are on the rise... It's so weird how much things can change in such a short time.
