Reimagined Attack Animations for the Nightmares (Five Nights at Freddy's)

Used sound effects from: FNaF4, Sister Location, KZbin Library, and plenty of my own foley work.
This video is mostly an excuse to just let myself have fun playing around with the assets I created for my animation ‘Bad Dream’ last year. When I made that, I wanted to adhere to the ‘don’t show the monster’ mentality to enhance the spookiness, but it came at the cost of my high-detail Nightmare models I spent many weeks making only getting something like 30 cumulative seconds of screen time, and even then they just kind of stood there. This is effectively a best-of compilation of all sorts of cool things I was itching to have the Nightmares do in ‘Bad Dream,’ but restrained myself from showing for fear of blowing the tension.
One thing I made sure to preserve from the game is how the Nightmares seem a lot more handsy with the player in FNaF4 than other Five Nights titles. Almost every death animation has the monster physically grabbing you or even picking you up, as opposed to just screaming in your face. I see it as a little nod of foreshadowing for what happens to poor little Evan Afton at the end of the game, where the older brother and his friends pick him up against his will to shove his face into the opening and closing mouth of the animatronic Fredbear he’s scared of, trying to make it ‘kiss’ him, but instead resulting in the accident. I also see it as a remnant of a previous version of the lore where the dreams belong to Evan on his deathbed. The current lore of Michael dreaming in the POV of his own little brother screams ‘retcon’ to me, but I digress.
Freddy kneeling on the bed actually happens in his animation in FNaF4 if you’re facing the bed when you trigger it. It only lasts for a frame or two before he grabs you, so it’s difficult to see unless you study it closely, but it’s there.
Bonnie slamming the door open like this came to me as a little nod to how Bonnie’s AI has a tendency to be programmed as slightly more aggressive and headstrong, at least when compared to Chica. I don’t think it’s actually the case in FNaF4, in fact I think Bonnie’s and Chica’s behavior might be identical in this game, but that isn’t enough to dissuade me from incorporating this bit of fanon. This is also the only one where I went out of my way to look at the original death scream frame-by-frame for reference.
If Bonnie is the ‘aggressive and headstrong’ one, then by comparison that makes Chica more quiet and subtle. I decided to lean into that again here, having her move more slowly and quietly. Her behavior here is also based on something she actually does game, where if you catch her in the hallway and hide behind the door, instead of using the light like you’re supposed to, she will use the opportunity to creep up to the door while you have it closed and strike after you open it again.
Foxy’s eye being visible through the gap in the closet doors is a direct carry-over from an idea which didn’t make it into Bad Dream. Even in the final animation, Foxy is looking directly at the camera during the whole closet scene, but you’d have no way of knowing because it’s too dark to see. I think that was for the best, so we see as little as possible, but it was cool enough that I didn’t want the idea to go to waste, so I used it again here. The bit with the turning off of the flashlight and obscuring Foxy in darkness being what’s needed to get the doors to close is more of the ‘dream logic’ stuff that I think is quite cool. The business with the tongue is a near one-to-one recreation of the image my mind conjured up upon laying eyes on Nightmare Foxy’s promo image for the first time back in 2015.
The end with Fredbear I’m quite proud of, I must admit. I’m very happy with ‘bad dream feeling’ of it. I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I have nightmares, they usually instill in me same sort of emotion that I felt while making this final part of the animation. The bit with the back face of the door becoming a dark shadow for Fredbear to emerge was achieved by layering two different renders from the same camera on top of each other in the composite.
After this, I have one more animation idea I want to make about FNaF4 someday, showing the confrontation with Fredbear and Nightmare. It would effectively be an extension of ‘Bad Dream’, just playing out differently thanks to the different threat. My personal interpretation of Nightmare is as a sign of the dream starting to drift away from the initial inspiration (Real-life Fredbear) and devolving into a pure, visceral, ‘platonic monster’. In other words, the form of the nightmare being stripped away to reveal the bare function. My animation for them would incorporate this idea, by having the whole environment start to inexplicably devolve in the way dreams tend to do, maybe having doors appear and disappear, changing the layout of the room, that kind of thing.

The most common criticism this animation has been receiving so far is that it isn’t scary or startling enough to live up to FNaF4’s jumpscares. To these people, I’d like to offer my previous FNaF4 animation ‘Bad Dream’ I did last year, in which I focused much more on actually making it nerve-wracking to watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJ-kaKF_hp6UhcU This video, by contrast, is just me playing around with the FNaF4 set and Nightmare models I had left over. I just wanted to make something which would be fun to animate first and foremost, and for me that meant leaning more into creating a pre-scream ‘uh oh’ moment than the actual scream itself. None of these will make you jump out of your seat, but that was not by mistake. There’s a reason I never called these ‘jumpscares’ in either the title or the opening disclaimer.

That Foxy one has had something of a mixed reception in the comments so far- a bit of an experiment, but I was trying to animate the very first thing I imagined Nightmare Foxy doing, when his promo image first went up in 2015. The shot of the tongue thrashing and slicing around in your face is a mental image I’ve been holding on to since I played the final release the game and was dismayed to see the tongue removed.

With the jumpscares, I always felt they went on for too long. Like they're trying to shake you awake rather than kill you. I feel like if they really got the jump on me, the most I'd see is either a lot of blood flowing down my face, or my own body as my head rolls off it

@@TheNickofTime I get what you were going for with Foxy, but the tongue looks too rigid to actually slash your face (although if it's retractable, maybe it can pierce). @ultmateragnarok8376
@ultmateragnarok8376 Жыл бұрын
That's the feeling it gives, yeah! I was trying to think why it felt like that, how to word it. I think as well, a part of that, is that it's not any less dark outside those lights - sure, you can see what's in them. But there's an impenetrable wall of darkness past them anyways, and you're not able to see behind the door into that shadowed corner (which the games honestly leave rather unused; I'm somewhat surprised it's not, like, where Foxy runs to originally), or around the hall's actual corner. It just means you don't have control over not seeing what's coming, and in a case where seeing it only serves to further unnerve you because you can't truly stop it (especially because it means Chica's coming willingly into light, so your light seems less likely to do anything), that's not helpful for your nerves.

I love the implication that Nightmare Bonnie COULD have just attacked the child then and there, but chose not to simply out of sadism. I've always felt that sort of cruel, sadistic vibe from the Bonnies, and I feel like this was the perfect touch and adds a lot of personality. Unlike the others, it's not about the kill itself, but the thrill of the hunt.

@@TheNickofTime The thing that does that, I think, is the way that while the games' own jumpscares are immediate, startling scares - hence them being a jumpscare - yours are different, here. That effect, of turning around or turning the light on and seeing it simply waiting right in front of you now, builds tension ever higher, and that tension will mount the longer you wait, up to a point, particularly since there's little you can do to stop it. All the classic games _did_ that, too - funnily enough, 4 does it the least. Freddy outside your unpowered office; Mangle dangling from the ceiling with thoughts unknown running through its heads; Springtrap lurking at the doorway of your office with nothing telling whether he'll attack or leave. You don't know what these things are thinking, what they intend to do or what they _will_ do regardless of their intent. I think part of it is with Freddy's, Bonnie's and somewhat Chica's, there's a much slower ramp down where you know what's coming and mentally prepare for it, because they move in to grab you. Foxy's, too, but not nearly to the same degree because he doesn't do so in any way other than his tongue moving ever faster, which doesn't clearly express much of anything compared to, y'know, walking up and picking you up and getting all in your face.
@EmiWi
@EmiWi Жыл бұрын
@@TheNickofTime imo, that method only amplifies tension that was already there, instead of the instant tension of the original jumpscares. There's no tension build before the attacks in this video, meaning no tension to amplify into a scarier attack than the original, but if there was a lot of tension, you would really feel how screwed you are before the actual attack. Another thing is: the attacks where they scream in this video don't seem startling enough alone anyways. EDIT: okay after watching over the rest of the video, Foxy and Chica were pretty well done and quite scary.
@isahstanzx

@@ultmateragnarok8376i see your point, but for me its different. when i played fnaf 4, it was the feeling that you couldnt stop. and those moments dont bring up the tension because you know exactly when they are going to jumpscare you, making it less scary. with the original jumpscares, you are already waiting to flash your light and think “am i right or was that little noise them? or was it no noise at all?” and the immediate jumpscare doesnt prepare you for it. however, i thought this animation was pretty cool. and this is just my opinion.

The slow wind up is a nice toch, You lose the surprise but you make it a whole lot more unsettling. I really love the slow burn from Fredbear. You can hear it running around, and when it stops at the side of the door, you try to outsmart it, going to the other door and hiding behind it. For a moment, there was silence, maybe, you did the right choice... However, that was not the case, as it outsmarted you by bending reality itself. On the dark side of the door, it materializes itself, an opposing figure. It does not attack on sight, finding more convenient staying still for a moment. To remind you of how small, fragil and helpless you are. And it doesn't even make it unpredictable, it shines it eyes to alert of your end. God i love this

I’ve always thought that the first time you get jumpscared (by each character) in a FNaF game there could be an animation just like this - something that accentuates the disturbing way these animatronics sadistically murder you. And THEN the jump scares could be punchy since the player wouldn’t want the lengthy death every time. Thanks for making this! :)

now, one thing I will say, jumpscares are supposed to do as they're named, be sudden and jump at you to scare you, these kinda animations don't really fit the bill and the shock value gets lost when they do eventually scream in your face because of how much of a gap there is between the animatronic grabbing you and jumpscaring you however, the foxy one, that is really, REALLY good, the way foxy just grapples you and slowly brings your head to his mouth while metallic screeches are sounding off from his tongue is just near perfect for such a terrifying closet fox the jumpscares in FNAF 4 are one of the reasons to a lotta people it has such a scare factor, listening intently, hoping you can hear or not hear breathing, it makes your ears hypersensitive to the actual jumpscare because of how much louder it is and thus gets way more of a reaction out of the player, removing that sudden loud jumpscare removes 1 of FNAF 4's 2 scare factors (those 2 being loud jumpscares and tension), that disparity between deafening silence and ridiculously loud jumpscares is what gives FNAF 4 its horror

Oh, this is great! They moved almost too much, it feels like - Foxy's was my favorite (though Fredbear's definitely retains that inescapable dream monster quality better; he doesn't play by the rules), because him just standing there, nearly motionless but still tracking you and staring you down is exactly what I like in that regard. The others, too - the way the Freddles interact with turning the lights off was terrifying. Chica's intro in the hallway does retain it as well, I loved that. Freddy's intro image pose does kind of make him funnier though, because him saying 'look at this little shit, this is my child' comes to mind when I see it. Anyways, they move startlingly organically, which makes them stand out a lot from your other work with them and with other similar animatronic ideas, but it makes them terrifying in their own way here. The scream almost doesn't fit how they feel, here, but it still works - particularly with those bright lights coming in the moment they do so. I absolutely love the idea you had in the description, of Nightmare's introduction, as well - reorganizing the layouts of the games while not massively changing the mechanics is such a cool idea, so I'm glad you're interested in making something with that. You've incited another rewatch of Bad Dream, which I do rather often (and I'm surprised only one of those reaction channels has seen it, as well).

Purely from a gameplay standpoint, the instant jump scares of the game are there to avoid player anger. First they lose, and second they need to wait for the death animation to play before they can have another go. That said, I think your Freddy and Bonnie hit a nice sweet spot where it's still fast enough to allow a quick restart, but then also creates actual dread, rather than "loud noises, gif!"

I like Foxy's tongue. It's clear that it's an elastic object, but it has solid segments so it's not completely flacid as it turns. It's more like a paralyzed tentacle. People REALLY forget that those things are robots... Well, more like nightmares of ones.

I really like these. They replace the jumpscare fear with actual full fear, making them more scary. I feel they could have been executed better and incorporate jumpscare into them, but they are still good.

I like the idea of having these horifying things in your bedroom but not acting immediately agressive. Seeing this thing moving but youre unseure of its intentions makes me uneasy. A lot of tension builds up in that pure silence before the attack

Did their eyes always look like that? Really cool stuff. Chica's didn't grab me (get it?) but the rest would be cool in a FNAF 4+, so to speak.

The eyes are physically unchanged from the game, but with different materials: They're more reflective, making them more likely to catch the light in strange ways, and they've also had the glowing irises removed except while attacking.

I feel that these are better as a way to create fear, with no actual real jumpscare but the suspense that is built by the eerie silence is incredible.

Fnaf is scary, but something it has sort of been lacking is its creepiness. it's never really unnerved me as much, rather it would get the jump out of me. (dont get me wrong, i love fnaf!) your animations and models genuinely activate my fight or flight! and that is the highest honour i can personally give you. incredible work, dude!! Edit: DUDE THE FREDBEAR ONE IS PERFECT!

The Freddy and Fredbear are the best ones for me. Freddy's and Fredbear's attacks look like something you see while having a sudden flashback. Freddy's attack looks like something you'd see before having flashbacks or some sort of scene-change, while Fredbear's attack looks like something you'd see before suddenly waking up. Though I did feel like something was lacking.

If they were in my house, I'm pretty sure I would shit myself out of fear before fainting, good stuff my dude, plus, I feel like a slow build up to an attack works better since, sure, a sudden scream and attack would make someone jump, but here, you would just have those few seconds of realizing that you just fucked up, royally

Only recently i understood how terrifying it is the concept of nightmares in the house. We used to fight animatronics with heavy metal doors, mask and light, audio system and so on. But in our house we only have a weak wooden doors. We're helpless little mouse against killer machines.

I think they’d be better in an actual game because it would give more time for someone to be immersed enough to get scared by them. The scares are delayed by several seconds and it makes it look more goofy than creepy or scary because how “off-brand” these models look. By far the best were Chica and Bonnie.
