Knew people w a big, friendly Great Dane named “Kitty.” When people would visit them at night, they’d ask, “Do you want see our ‘Kitty?’” Then they would gather at the back door and call, “here Kitty Kitty Kitty!” No one expected a giant, happy, lumbering dog to coming running out of the darkness.

I absolutely got teary-eyed when you mentioned "heart break breed" I have a Saint Bernard and I know she's the same way. 8-10 year. This girl came to stay at my house for a short time while her owner got on her feet. Five years later this big ole girl is my best friend and attached like velcro. I never knew I could love a dog so much! She was by my side through some of the most horrible days and nights of PTSD. She stuck by me during my days of so much anxiety it was difficult to leave my house. Now I am by her side during the beginning of her twilight years. It's my turn give back to her. Because of her love the life before PTSD that I thought was forever gone has re-emerge. We go hiking, swimming, shopping, and anything else we want to do. She goes to work with me and while I do my job she does her job as my service dog. I will be forever grateful for the unforseen circumstances that brought this angel into my life!

Instead at 9 months old we found out she had terminal kidney disease due to a birth defect condition. She was pampered and babied and lived until she was almost 4. I treasure every minute I had with her and I’m grateful that she was spared any pain until the last couple weeks but my heart still breaks when I think of her. ❤️💔Dymynd💔❤️

What was missing here is that in this Famine that China suffered, ALL Western countries left China alone. China received NO HELP from anyone. In other famines such as in India, in Africa, in Ireland or even the one suffered by Haiti, the wester nations contributed. In Bangladesh they contributed. In Bengal, the wester nations contributed. In Biafra, they contributed. Who does not remember the "Africa LIVE AID" of 1985, to help Somalia and Ethiopia? I still remember the song: "We are the World". And for China... NOTHING. This country, China, faced disaster alone and came out stronger than ever in its history. Alone. Without invading any sovereign country. Without stealing anyone's resources. Without attacking and without intervening in the affairs of other nations. Alone. Working hard to become the second world economic power. 40 years ago China was starving. Today, China has its own Space Station and is already on Mars. Today, the Chinese are proud to be Chinese. Three decades ago, the Chinese felt humiliated. Well not anymore. Never more! And finally. It's True: There was a terrible Famine. And yes, it is true. The Famine was Mao's fault... But, the Famine was also because China suffered 37 years of WAR! China was at uninterrupted war for 37 years! (Just between 1913-1949 have: --Xinhai Revolution: Failed New Empire Coup. --Second Xinhai Revolution. --National Protection War. --Warlord Infighting Across China. --First United Front: Northern Expedition. --First Chinese Civil War. --Second United Front: Protection against Japan in the WWII. --Second Chinese Civil War). U see? China was at war! This is why the Famine happened and not just Mao. China suffered more than two years of Hungry (1959-1961), and although Famines have been present throughout the history of mankind, they have never been as cruel as in China and its almost 5 million deaths. (The Propaganda says it was 10 million... or more).

Just in case anyone was curious about food cost, my dane goes through a 40 pound bag of food in 1.5-2 weeks (he only weighs 135#). I buy anywhere from 80-120 pounds of food. A MONTH at 60 bucks per bag 😂 Another thing to consider is vet bills. Typically dog medicine is based on weight so just the heartworm prevention I buy for my dane is twice the amount for my lab. They are the best most soulful, stubborn, goofy, regal dogs in the world and I am in love with the breed after getting my boy 🥺

As an owner of two 2-year old Great Dane littermates, I concur with your comments on the high cost of feeding this giant breed. In my experience with these two, as well as with our previous Great Danes, I find them to be exceptionally affectionate with people and are tolerant with most other dogs. They can be a bit clumsy in their awkward growing years, but their large stature displays a rather regal presence. Great Danes truly are a 'heart-break' breed as our time with them goes by so quickly.

When I was little (maybe eight years old, I think?), my grandparents had a Great Dane. She was ADORABLE and such a goofball. I will never, ever forget the day my Grandpa took me to the park, and when we got back, we'd taken the alley to walk up to the house by way of the backyard. Dana (the dog) was racing up and down the back fence when she saw us, just SO EXCITED to see two of her hoomans! Grandpa smiled and said, "Hey, wanna ride her up to the porch?" I told him, "YEAH! Can I?" He laughed and said, "Uh... I shouldn't do that... Grandma will have BOTH our hides if I do!" Ah, man... But, that's okay. I was tiny at eight, but that's NEVER a good idea to let a child ride a dog. Great memory, though, that conversation. I miss them both. I think Dana passed away a few years later, if I remember right, and my Grandpa passed away when I was 17. I'll always cherish that as one of my favourite memories.

It took me years to figure that one out on my own. I was spending way too much money on expensive beds that my Great Dane would flatten like a tortilla in a matter of months. The key is to not buy the coiled crib mattresses. They are not made to handle that much weight so I bought a foam crib mattress on Amazon a few years back for $45 and it was the best investment for my dog. She loves her bed and changing the sheets is way easier than dealing with dog bed covers with zippers.

Tracker is beautiful! We had a Great Dane almost 40 years ago that was marked just like this (except with white on his front feet - we said he was always formally attired in tuxedo and spats) and had uncropped ears. He was a stray that had been seen all over town, but no one could catch him. When he made it to our house, he must have been tired of being homeless, because he came right in and stayed. Our vet at the time estimated that he was 4 or 5, so he lived to 11 or 12 when we chose to end his suffering from debilitating arthritis. Treatment options were more limited 30 years ago. He was, indeed, a gentle giant and member of the family who appointed himself as our son's guardian from the day we brought him home from the hospital. Thank you for educating your viewers about bloat! We have always had athletic large breed dogs, so we have followed bloat control protocols for years.

Had I known about bloat I would have had gastroplex done on my dog before hand to prevent it.

This is why I believe you should always look up common health problems for the breed you get so you can treat them for said issues early to make it easier if they do get them even if hey don't! So with big dogs looking up common health issues like bloating can help a tin as it teaches you to heavily space out their food. For certain breeds that often have hip or joint issues you can feed them things to help with said issues early which make it less likely they'll get them and if they do it tends to not be as bad! I which this was more common ESPECIALLY the knowledge about bloating!! Bloating is horrible, expensive, and extremely scary especially when unprepared..I wouldn't wish it on anyone..

I said "Bye Loretta!" and walked right back upstairs.😂 My cousin was cracking up and told me "But he's just a puppy!" I said "Not when he's taller than me!... I'll see you when you come upstairs." Kinda strange, isn't it? The general trend in nature is the bigger the animal, the longer its lifespan. She was black with a white star on her chest, some white on her paws and on the tip of her tail. Her name was Misha, and one of the funniest things about her was that she would hold still for HOURS while my little brother, a toddler at the time, would pass out on top of her. All she did was look at my mom for help. My parents split when I was 5 or 6 so she got rehomed to a family who had a full lab and they became besties, sharing beds and everything. She lived a super long time, probably due to the half lab genes and the family being really on the ball about her health, but nearing 20 years later, I still miss her like crazy. Danes are the best!

As a kid I grew up with five of those 'pony's' running around in our home. These dogs are great to have, especially with kids.

My mom has a Great Dane. She's a big sweet boofer who will constantly bother you for pets and hugs. And she's a spoiled princess.

Those pants are legit fire. I have a corgi here watching this with me, and he seems to be thoroughly offended that I'm watching this and not paying attention to him.

Adding on to the mention of bloat here since I have a great dane (Loki). It's possible to get your dog's stomach tacked so that, if it is bloated, it cannot twist. The twisting/torsion of the stomach is the thing that causes major problems. Loki had a bloat incident a few months ago while my parents and I were travelling, but the place he was staying caught it and brought him to an emergency vet. After a very stressful car ride, we were informed that the vet had successfully operated on him and his stomach is now tacked so that it can't twist. If anyone else here wants to get a great dane, I recommend tacking their stomach when you do an operation like neutering/spaying. We weren't able to do that initially with Loki because he has a heart condition, but now that it's taken care of it's a weight off our minds. Anyways, great danes are amazing and I really enjoyed watching this groom!

My Great Dane is 156 pounds and has horrible back legs. He has a lot of problems and his back legs are slowly giving way, so we are unable to give him walks without having to carry him back. I love him so much but I feel so sorry for him. He’s 4 years old and due to his condition (allergies to his meds, and those legs giving way) we’re gonna have to put him down in the next 2 years or sooner. It’ll break my labradoodles’ heart. She’s his best friend and she’ll miss him so much.

Bloat is definitely a concern with large breeds. Another way to mitigate issues is to have the stomach tacked. Having elevated dog bowls can help, too. Love this breed. She seems like a sweetheart!

We had our girls stomach tacked when she was spayed, and her colon wound up twisting later in life. According to the vet it was a result of the tack, but the odds of that vs bloat are rare. just saying it’s not a cure all.

I had a terrible no good bad baby sitter from age 2 to 3. Nothing about that household brought me joy, except they had a great dane. I loved that dog and it was the only source of joy I can remember in that house and he is most likely responsible for my love of dogs today.
