Yeah, very nice lesson! I enjoyed the expression IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF. I think I'm a very dedicated English student, if I do say so myself. I watch two videos a day here on youtube, by multiple talented teachers such as Jennifer, Vanessa, Rachel, Gabby...I appreciate the effort of yours. By the way, 15 hours to produce a video 😱😱😱 ?? I didn't know it was so demanding! Thank you Jennifer.

So nice of you dear for this "So, so" lesson.... I do watch lots of other English lessons conducted by other English teachers but I had never come across anyone explaining this so called word "so" as good as you have explained it today, dear .. 🙏🌹😘 Infact, the most striking phrase of all the so's for me was the one with... "If I do say so myself... 😁 Thanks heaps for this" so" lesson dear and I was impressed so much by it... Sending so much of love to you and your family, too!!👋🌹🙏 "Gams"

Super lesson. There are so many ways to use "so." It's a pity that the discourse marker isn't acceptable in academic writing. However, there are alternatives; "So, there is no need to go there." - "This means that there is no need to go there." 🍓🍋🍏
@Englishwithjennifer2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, we can survive without using "so" at the start of our written sentences. :)
@ArunGoyal20072 жыл бұрын
Jennifer does it again. i could count at least 21 different meanings to the word "so" in the 16 min video. As a pronoun, so refers to a whole range of antecdents of shades in the B-W spectrum. The wider the meanings, deeper the language. That is English. In India, the word is used to refer to an inknown person, a common usage is , " So and so said this, but you don't have to go hearsay". We repeat words for emphasis. of course, so is used as conjunction to show consequence. It is like the word therefore. My teacher in the MBA class used to machine gun fire the unlucky student in her grip in the classroom with a So at the end of his reply to her questioning . Finally,the victim ran out of answers, no argument left. He realised that his initial statement was without a base. (And the rest of the class had a good laugh at the expense of the trapped). My wife tries to use the so weapon on me in our many arguments over trifles. I have learnt to parry her by silence or humour. Thanks once again for sowing the so word.

Hello Arun. Indeed, there are more uses of "so," and those could create a follow-up lesson. :) I think a very important distinction to understand is SO vs. SO THAT. People can have fun with the word, but as you said, they can also wield it like a weapon. Thanks for watching my lesson this week!

Be sure you put period at the end of sentences. 13:45 A comma should not be between the word "Facebook" and the space bar. 16:07
@Englishwithjennifer2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for keeping an eye on punctuation. Remember "that" can be dropped. Just because it's dropped doesn't mean we replace it with a period. Some writers stick in a comma, but I don't think it's necessary. See another example here: www.britannica.com/dictionary/so The library is so large (that) you could get lost in it.

Hi Jennifer! It is really wonderful to know that there are many uses of the word so. Here are some examples: It was quite hot today, so l stayed at home and watched some TV. Our team is working hard, so we can win the final. So, let's talk about it. The weather was beautiful. Even so, he refused to come out and enjoy it. I wonder what's wrong! Would you like to know more about this offer? If so, please let us know by clicking on the link below. A:Why should I do that? B:Because I said so. Take it easy! There's only so much one person can do. We have to be mindful about our preparations. There are only so many days left for the final. A: Y You can do it. Just take it easy! B: If you say so. A: It's because of you that I can't concentrate on my work. B: Is that so. I am so honoured to be a part of this wonderful journey. It was raining so heavily that it flooded the streets. There's nothing that could have stopped them from losing that match. But no. It just so happens that it started raining heavily and match was called off. Please check! Take care!

As I told Arun, there are even more uses, so maybe I'll create a follow-up video at some point. Suggestions/corrections: Our team is working hard SO THAT we can win the final. Use a question mark >> B: Is that so? Shift to the past >> It just so happened that it started raining heavily and match was called off.

Good morning, Mam! I can't understand this whole sentence firstly they didn't use helping verb after question word " why" isn't be like Why does ? and then "if clause" because as far I get here it is not used as conditional . Could you please explain this , please ? Ex: climates and soils differ , so why drink mediocre wine from your backyard If you can buy a smoother variety from a place whose soil and climate is much better suited to grasp vines?

This is an example of ellipsis. Words are missing but undertsood: Why (should you) drink mediocre wine from your backyard?

Can we please make another "so" spelled as "soo". I know people will complain that it would be pronounced weird, like sue, but "sew" is pronounced as "so", and "to" could have been pronounced like "so" with a "t" but it's not. Besides, weird pronunciation has never stopped the English language. I think of it as "to", and "too". Different meanings. I Think "so" and "soo" could be like that.
@Englishwithjennifer2 жыл бұрын
Well, we could stretch out the adverb "so" for emphasis. Informally, you might see someone text: I'm soooooo excited!/ You're SOOOOOOO amazing. You don't need to write all those O's, but some people like to do that. I may cover more uses of "so" in a follow-up video.
