Hi Jennifer! Thank you for the lesson! I wish there were no taxes, life would have been delightful. But then taxes do help the governments to meet their budgetary requirements aimed at fulfilling their responsibilities. I believe hundred percent tax compliance cannot be achieved until it's made simple and progressive. There can't be a uniform tax regime across a particular country. It has to be region specific. Factors like geography, income, charity, status etc need to be taken care of while formulating tax policies. Please check my mistakes! Take care!
@Englishwithjennifer3 жыл бұрын
I agree with your logic. If filing taxes were simpler, it would be easier to get people to pay. By the way, I just got notice in the mail that my excise tax is due. It's over $100 for 2022. Corrections/suggestions: I wish there were no taxes. Life would be delightful. But then taxes do help the governments to meet their budgetary needs. I believe one hundred percent tax compliance cannot be achieved until it's made simple and progressive. There can't be a uniform tax system across a particular country. It has to be region specific. Factors like geography, income, charity, status, etc. need to be considered while formulating tax policies. There are some people who study law and focus specifically on tax law. Wow.

As I said, if one's situation isn't complicated, then the person can file on his/her own. But to collect everything and keep track of business expenses is itself a lot of work.

Hello Jennifer! Thanks a lot for the excellent lesson! I've heard that the tax system in the USA is rather complicated. Your explanation confirms it. In my opinion, the flat tax system is better than the progressive one. I always prefer simple solutions as well as prefer not to waste my time on formal and dull things:)
@Englishwithjennifer3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sergei. Yes, there's a part of me that agrees with you. The flat tax system is so much cleaner. In trying to be as a fair as possible, we've created headache that usually requires tax payers to hire accountants or tax preparers at large chains in order to file. It's a whole industry now: tax preparation services. As much as I don't like talking about taxes, I think it's important to have a basic understanding of how the system works. Thanks for watching. Take care.

You're amazing. You do your own taxes and handle your family accounts too. Wow. Wish I could hire you. :) Ha ha. Suggestion: In Italy, we also have a progressive tax system, tax credits, deductions and deadlines. When is tax season in Italy?
@danielat26072 жыл бұрын
@@Englishwithjennifer we usually pay taxes on spring. It is possible to pay every month or in one solution. Furthermore, the Italian tax system is getting easy and understandable, apparently the government intends to facilitate this e-process with clear website and documentation.

This is an enlightening video. We learn that income tax is just one of many taxes we have to endure. In the UK, we have the dreaded VAT (value added tax). This adds 20% to the cost of everything apart from uncooked food. In addition to that, outrageously high taxes are levied on products that are viewed as harmful, like petrol, diesel, tobacco and alcohol.
@Englishwithjennifer3 жыл бұрын
I get the rationale for taxes on harmful products. This is a means to discourage use. I can't imagine 20% added on to so many things -- necessary and useful things. The price becomes deceiving. Thank you for watching and allowing me to dive deep into taxes. It's not my favorite subject, but it's one you can't avoid, so it's better to be informed and make sure you got a handle on the terminology.

It is very useful lesson thanks but I heard if you didn't work during the entire year or outside of USA you still have to file zero tax. If you don't there's a big penalty. Is true?
@Englishwithjennifer3 жыл бұрын
Hi. If you work abroad as a U.S. citizen, you still have to file your federal tax return. If you don't earn anything, you don't have to file, but then someone should claim you as a dependent. If you earn over a certain amount (I think $400), you have to file, but you likely won't owe anything.

Thank you for listening to my lengthy explanation. Yes, it can depend on the country. I like the progressive tax system in theory, but in reality is very complicated.
