A Drive in My 1931 Ford Model A Pickup on a Warm Winter's Day

An ideal warm winter's day in Sequim, Washington for a drive in my Model A. And best of all, all of the mechanical systems worked perfectly! Well, maybe my gear shifting still needs improvement. :-)

Around 1960 the first car I ever drove was a 29 model A that was sitting in a field owned by my friends uncle who had a garage. The starter spring was broken and of course uncle had another. You didn’t mention the spark advance lever. If you didn’t pull it back in time after the start it would break the starter spring. Beautiful trick, thanks for sharing it.😊

I'm newer to Model As and this video sparked a few questions: - At 1:09 what is the big silver thing that says "AUTO-LITE", i've never seen that before - When you hit a bump does the fuel gauge go up and down until it settles? - Is it stock? you said it only goes 45 so i assume you dont have an Overdrive installed, is it also a 6v system? Feel free to disregard this as i've never done it personally, but i saw a video that said you needed to double clutch to down shift, if i remember correctly its like shifting out of gear into neutral, reving in neutral and then shifting into the lower gear. Paul Shinn is who made the video and he has a lot of other great videos on these cars

Good questions! The long, silver part larked Auto Lite is manifold heater. There's a firewall valve to control the heat entering the cab, although it leaks some heat after the engine gets hot. The gas gauge float cork bounces around whenever the A is in motion. Right now, the gauge is flooded so the reading is not accurate. Even when it is working, I visually inspect the fuel tank, sometimes dipping a wooden rod to check the depth. My A will go faster than 45, but I don't feel safe above this speed. In fact, I reached 50 mph on this drive, but did not record video of it because of oncoming traffic. My 1931 Ford Model A pickup is mostly stock, with a few minor modifications, like chrome bumpers and the steering box, which was modified with a Zerk grease nipple fitting instead of being filled with 600w oil (same as is in the transmission). This is a common modification because the oil slowly leaks out. I’ve tried double-clutching for down shifting, but I was not good at doing this and I found that it really isn’t necessary, unless you need to drive up and down steep hills. In fact, you can leave this vehicle in third gear when going just 5 mph or less and it won’t stall the engine. And it will chug up steep grades while in third gear. Also, on cold days when the engine and transmission oil have not fully warmed up, I have started from a stop in third gear rather than shift the gears, often grinding them because the cold 600w oil to reach the speed limit.
