As promised - for about 2 years now - here is the long awaited POV ride in my 1930 Coupe.
I don't want to raise any hopes - this was pre-recorded in April 2022, the car is still in pieces and the engine being rebuilt.
Enjoy!

Hey Astra-Werke, no worries and all of us old Car folks are well accustomed to the long wait that is an engine rebuild. I’m actually attempting to get a bit more life out of an engine with Babbitt not much better than yours was. Hopefully you are making headway and I am certain we will all be pleasantly surprised with a re-install video one day soon. Take care!

Years ago, my Model had brakes that took a while to stop the car, no matter how hard I pressed the pedal. I removed a wheel and saw that the brake linings were "upgraded" to molded rather than woven linings. I didn't know that the mechanical brake system needed the softer woven lining to operate safely. I had a few "close calls", almost rear-ending a car or two till someone explained that molded brake shoes were not an upgrade but a danger. I had a rear stop light that was red glass with amber letters that spelled out STOP. I was pulled over by an angry cop who was already writing me a ticket for not having an all red lens. I told him " That is an original glass lens. It was made that way." He said " You mean that is all one piece? You didn't add the amber letters?" When I said "Yes" he cursed, slammed his ticket book shut, and stomped back to his car. Nobody else even tried to give me a ticket in that old, '30 Coupe.

I feel like I could have a successful first try at driving a Model A just from listening to your advice. I like the idea that you really do need to be alert and aware when driving a Model A. Nothing autonomous about Henry's Lady (although she does have an independent streak!). 16:04 I think if the camera DID get you, the authorities would take a look at the photo and assume their equipment needed adjusting!😆 Thank you for taking us along on your journey. It's probably the closest I'll ever get to a trip in a Model A, and I couldn't ask for a better experience. I truly enjoyed this. Thank you for taking the time to record and post it. Greetings from San Antonio Texas! I love your videos. The spark control with shifting information is helpful. You mention the heat from the floorboards keeping you from freezing in the winter. I just bought my first Model A in July and drive it every weekend. The daytime temperature here has exceeded 38 degrees C (over 100 Fahrenheit) every day for more than a month. It was cooler outside the car than sitting in it! My shoe soles became soft and sticky. You could feel the engine and exhaust pipe heat blasting up through the floor. I will insulate the floorboards before next summer. I look forward to every video you do. PS The car does evaporate some water but has not over-heated.

adding a heat deflector on top of the muffler helps a lot too. Insulate the firewall as well as the floorboards. That firewall gets hot. The more insulation that you add the quieter it becomes too.

Great Video. I just completed (Saturday 1st Oct) 1300km run in my 1927 Model T tourer. It was the Australian Model T Nationals in Dubbo western New South Wales. Drove the 300km from my place in Lithgow to Dubbo, did the week of local touring (most day runs were around 200km but a couple of days were much shorter) then drove the car home and it is now tucked safely in my garage. Car performed really well except for a slight muffler explosion (all put back together later that day). We cruised at about 60kph on the flat but down to 20kph, and low gear, on the steeper hills. Was a fantastic week.

I liked the talk about shifting the gears with an unsynchronized gearbox. I used to drive an Allis Chalmers front wheel loader in a sandpit when I was much younger (1978 - 1981). That darn thing had an unsynchronized gearbox and a hard to use clutch. So I learned to change the gears without using the clutch at all. That was before I had my drivers license. At that time it was mandatory to get drive lessons from a government qualified teacher in order to get a drivers license. The instructor had a pale face when I drove that BMW only using the clutch when starting from a stand still. Driving with the Allis Chalmers had also taught me to predict the traffic and adjust the speed so that I did not need to stop and thus avoid using the clutch. I applied the same technique while "learning" to drive that BMW. The instructor was very impressed on that. Driving Your car, I suppose, needs much more prediction than modern cars. I could see that in this video!

I've had the chance to sit in a 1930's Henschel Lorry. It took my full body weight to push the clutch through, so when I asked the owner how he manages to shift smoothly, he just said "by not using the clutch" and grinned... Being a lorry driver at that time must have been one hell of a job!

Nice to take a ride in a vintage-era car on this cold winter's night. I own a 1932 Morris Minor Two-seater which is almost never driven with the hood erected. Even if I did keep the hood up the car doesn't have any side-screens, so it'll be pretty damn chilly on a day like today. It's another cold day tomorrow and I'm hopefully using it to meet up with a friend for a coffee. I'll need it 🤣

Hello from Texas! I am curious if this car has a TÜV certification, or if one is required for a car this age in Germany? Did you have to retrofit amber turn signals, a rear fog light, etc?
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke Жыл бұрын
Any car on german roads needs to be TÜV certified. There are, however, special conditions for cars over 30 years old: They don't need to pass emission tests and have to only fulfill the regulations that existed the year the car was built (Therefor, it wouldn't need seatbelts or a reversing light for example). Since indicators were already mandatory in Germany back in the day, turn signals had to be retrofitted, but since the car was built before (i think) 1969, red rear indicators are fine.
@kylethestyle
@kylethestyle Жыл бұрын
@@AstraWerke Thanks for the reply. I currently daily-drive a 1970 Chevrolet C10 pickup. It has a 307 CID (5.0 liter) V8, manual steering, manual 3 speed transmission, and manual drum brakes all-around. Texas has a yearly safety inspection that all vehicles must pass. This includes basic things like making sure your vehicle's headlights, horn, brake lights, turn signals, windshield wipers, and brakes are working as they should, and that all fluids levels are adequate. We do not have emissions testing. What you said about looking ahead and planning your stops, turns, etc. in advance is very true. To drive the truck in modern traffic, you need to plan every move you make. I've had the truck as fast as 85 MPH, but without an overdrive gear, and a 3.73 rear axle ratio, I usually go 55 MPH on the highway. Surprisingly, I can get up to 17 MPG driving 55 MPH on the highway. City MPG is between 12-14 MPG.

To be honest, I don't know of a place in the world that still manufactures winter tyres of this size - if there ever were ones. When the car came out, rubber tyres were still in a very early stage of development, so the best one could do to adopt for snow driving was to put screws into the tread to act as spikes.

Floating the gears like a semi truck, you can drive a Model A. Floating the gears saves the clutch & your leg. MJ I hope my German translation is correct........

Sounds like you need to rebuild or at least realign your front end

Rebuild that front end & new all the same tread tires. Mounted & balanced correctly. Your spokes must be trued also.

Lucky man having a beautiful old Model A that you can fix/service yourself UNLIKE modern cars with computerized EVERYTHING that often BREAKS and cost a FORTUNE to fix!!!! 1.88 Euro is $3.30nzd we pay about $2.80 a litre???? currently depending on what part of the country you are in.

No it doesn't, 1.88€/L translates to $7,4/gallon, about double what Americans are paying for gas

I collect license plates. Have you seen a German 1930's license plate?

Never in real life, no. They were black letters on white backing and there was a roman numbering system for the different states (I for Prussia, II for Bavaria, III for Saxonia etc.), followed by a letter for the city - capitals being "A", and then ranking down to B, C, etc. Last not least, a number to identify the vehicle. An example would be "IIB - 24056".
