Alongside my lessons with an instructor, I also had lessons in the car with my dad. He came from a background of driving for over 35 years now and driven from cars to vans to lorries and even fast response vehicles. I probably learnt more having both the instructor and my dad than the majority of learners do with just an instructor

That sounds great tbh having two trained opinions. I think the problem is when the parent isn't qualified to teach. Then you end up with this mess lol. (not bashing the dad though, he is pretty good honestly and I've seen far worse online, it's just obviously instructors are trained to be able to explain and give commands and stuff in these situations)

I had lessons with an instructor but for the last month I had just my mum supervising. I think you need the instructor to teach you and then private practise to just get experience. I think if my mum would of tried to teach me I wouldn't of passed.

Nice driving getting the practice in with a parent outside of lessons makes a huge difference it means you can get taught something in a lesson and can then practice it. Watching KZbin as useful as it is , isnt going to develop you skills say on a roundabout. When going straight on you can use both lanes to go straight ahead. Say in rush hour traffic there is no need to stick all the time to left when going straight you can use the the right to progress. So left lane anything before 12 straight both lanes can be used and right lane for past 12.

20:00 I had this problem for like 20 lessons 💀. It's because you change gears at the wrong speed for the gear you've selected, so slow down more. But you can certainly do that if you wanna prepare early but if you ain't in the speed range of that gear, when you select it hold the clutch at bite for more longer then normal otherwise you get that car jerking

Saw the difference between instructor v parent this week as I was doing first reverse bay parks. With my instructor helping to guide, I consistently had the car in between the bay lines. In the same car park, a parent with their child was also doing reverse bay parking and the bay lines were right underneath the centre of the car.

My mid 80 something year old granddad wants to take me driving. He even bought me a car without consulting with anyone but it just wasn’t suitable (he bought it from shady sellers). I’ve had multiple lessons, watched hours worth of youtube videos, practiced with my mum and failed one test and I’m not getting any better at driving - Although I’m not awful at it, I have hood hazard awareness and stuff, I just can’t get the hang of staying in my lane when turning, smooth speed control, parking and other finer details. Whilst the idea is sweet, he isn’t able to multitask or concentrate on multiple tasks well anymore and can’t hear well. I do have a different car now but his idea of “safety” is to pull up the handbrake which is obviously incredibly dangerous - especially at higher speeds.

Bad habit of hers is coasting all the time. Coming up to the roundabout, she puts her foot on the clutch, goes down a gear but keeps foot down. There is no engine breaking happening. However pin probably already knows this.

Just curious, it appears that students are allowed to clutch coast in the UK, is that correct? I am a driving instructor in Australia and it's not allowed for safety reasons and the impact it can have on your vehicle's ability to stop safely.

No, we're not supposed to. Instructors usually intervene and stop the habit of coasting because it can be dangerous as it speeds the car up rather than slows it down, and it takes longer to slow the car down when coasting. I'm pretty sure you can fail if you do it too much. Not 100% sure though.

Interesting I thought the family member would be in the back seat. Question I have is was everything for this covered on insurance? If the ladies dad on here is not his car or is insurances cover then this is a massive risk to take. When I learnt to drive I got told if I wanted a family member but no chance would driving instructor be in the back seat and let family member take over unless they owned the car too.

Coasting too. She is coasting all the time. She goes down a gear but doesn’t engage that gear by getting off the clutch. Like 19:48 for example, she coasted way too early. Yea the camera makes things look a further away but still to long. She does it at almost all the roundabouts.

its your choice, you can either hold footbrake or engage the parking brake, the difference is that the parking brake is much stronger and it doesnt turn on rear braking light

If you are coming to a stop then yes, you should brake on gear so there's less fuel consumption compared to going neutral which eats more fuel. But when you are fully stopped it doesn't make a difference. I guess.

I find it so weird that everyone in the UK drives with instructors. I'm from Sweden, all of my friends had under 10 lessons with instructors, the vast majority had under 5 lessons. Everyone drives with their parents here.

I failed 2 times in 1 month and have another test in February First time I failed was one serious fault 4 minors speed on approach which I accept as I did break very hash to turn left into a road the second again 1 serious fault 3 minors time was controlled stop which was a emergency stop the examiner told me to speed up and then he said stop i breaked heavy and put the hand break up but still got a fail for not breaking hard enough everyone I drive says I’m a good driver I feel like the examiner was being harsh 🤷🏾‍♂️

Because its not a legal requirement. Also leaving it in gear when stopped makes it easier for learners to move off fast, instead of having to get in gear and drop the handbrake. Most learners will start putting it in neutral after they pass

As if the learner, when passed, will then do it differently, they have been taught they are doing it correctly. If we could learn to drive few decades back putting into neutral and handbrake on, why do today's learners need it 'easier'?
