AS an american in new york. my driving test was super easy. 15mins, make some left and right turns around the block, then parallel park. No highways, no complicated roads with crazy intersections. i felt so inadequate after getting my license. it's too easy to to pass in the USA, it seems so hard in UK. and most of us here use automatics.

@gonk9204 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, US tests seem really easy, actually- too easy. I think its becuase of how you guys have so many young drivers due to the lack of public transport, thats why the standard has dropped so low and why you see most US drivers in automatics (theres other reasons for the automatic being the norm but thats one of them). In the UK, youve gotta know how to drive by the time you take your test, infact, anyone will tell you, the standard is higher during the test then it will be for driving after you pass. As annoying as that is for first time drivers, its a pretty good way to ensure a certain level of ability before you put people on the roads.

This is a great "what-not-to-do" for me, as an American, who's had a license for over 20 years, and is now looking at taking my UK driving test. There really is MUCH less head room in cars over here, and it makes doing head checks feel really challenging.
@Warentester Жыл бұрын
Have you tried lowering your seat all to the bottom? My bro is 6'7" and doesn't have issues even in a small car like a VW Golf.
@soscipherr Жыл бұрын
@@Warentesterwith head checks, the issue is actually not having the space to turn and look over one's right shoulder, at least in the household car. Also, I'm only 5'10" and it's not a terribly small car we have, but no, the idea of sitting literally with the seat on the floor doesn't sound more comfortable for driving on what feels like the wrong side of the car.

You can easily get a roomy car as big as youd have in the US. Just the running costs would be unbearable.
@soscipherr Жыл бұрын
@@dfpguitar I do find it crazy that they sell gasoline by the liter here, but that aside, it's the way a lot cars seem to be made; without the headroom, or over shoulder clearance that I find odd and a bit frustrating. In the US, we are supposed to use the turn signal first to indicate our intent to other drivers, then check mirrors/ blind spot that it's safe, and then switch lanes or turn. The traffic lights and roundabouts are set up differently, and spatial awareness is very disorienting seeing all of this taking place on the opposite side of the road and especially opposite direction on roundabouts! Jazz is hilarious in the back seat! I feel like she legitimately is a more responsible driver at home.

My sister learned in the USA in an Auto. So few seem to have experience on stick shift as they call it like the twins in the US. The worse place for traffic and chaos for me was Thessalonkia in Greece, that was mad. I am amazed in the USA at the amount of undertaking and poor lane discipline, driving with food and drinks in your hand and poor handling of the steering wheel. Also all my US friends breathe in when you drive down cramped UK roads, they just are not used to the lack of space (Especially if you are from California). They don't really like traffic circles as they call them! Was a fun watch :)

I live in the USA. We are not strict on lane use here. Usually people turn left from the left lane and right from the right lane, but going forward nobody cares if you are in the left or right lane. They do not enforce faults if one is in the left (inside in the USA) lane too long.

People can say what they want but driving on the opposite side is not easy. Also streets in the UK and Ireland are much more narrow so combined with being unused to judging distance from cars/ walls on the left it's a stressful time.

In Canada and the USA, motorcycles cannot get in-between vehicles. If you are on a motorized vehicle, or in some areas even a bicycle, you must occupy the lane just like another car would. You are not allowed to go in-between vehicles so, there is really no need to check mirrors after a quick stop in traffic.

As an American would like to point out. The turning indicators are just that. They are treated as an indicator to the drivers around US that we are turning. (Not how I drive but how nearly all USA people do it.) Roundabouts are very few. The state I live in has maybe 6. I actually went to live with my uncle who actually has more. That’s were I got my license from so I got more practice in using the roundabouts. My other bonus when learning is the fact my uncle actually has had drivers licenses in Germany and Europe. So he actually knew the proper signaling and such, American drivers manuals don’t even mention the fact. Actually my state doesn’t even mention roundabouts at all. Also not only do the sides of the road we drive on flipped but also the over take lanes apparently. The left lane is considered the over take or fast lane. The right lane is the slow lane. Just interesting.

When you switch sides of driving and steering wheel position, everything just becomes opposite, that's why switching sides isn't as difficult as everyone thinks. Also I honestly don't think Americans even check their mirrors or blind spots at all, I know a lot don't, that's for sure

@damionlee76583 жыл бұрын
Whilst there is an element of it may seem safer to drive with both hands on the wheel (especially as it is drilled into learner drivers to do so), there is no requirement to do so, even during the test. You can drive your entire test steering with one hand, and the other off the wheel (on your lap, or the gear stick for example), and providing your steering is smooth and safe, it is not a driving fault. (The above comment presumes we are talking about drivers with two fully able arms and hands).

@@fatbroccoli8 absolutely positive. Driving examiners are guided by a formal document, commonly known as DT1. You can look up copies of the document online, but be mindful of the date of any document you download as DT1 is a "Controlled" document, which means that it can be changed and updated regularly, and any change is made to the official controlled version, and supercedes all previous copies. With that said, many things remain the same across updates. Technical Update 1.56 went in many years ago, and gives the following guidance on steering: "Steering: To ensure uniformity, when conducting car or vocational tests and ADI qualifying examinations, only assess the candidate's ability to control the vehicle and do not consider it as a fault if, for example, they do not hold the steering wheel at ten to two or quarter to three or if they cross their hands when turning the steering wheel. The assessment should be based on whether the steering is smooth, safe and under control." That last sentence is the most important to my point above. Examiners are instructed to mark on whether the steering is "Smooth, safe and under control" (whomever wrote that update needs to be introduced to the Oxford comma). If you can drive with one hand in a manner that is smooth, safe, and under control, you have met that requirement. "Control" has a definition given early in DT1, under section 1.07 Definitions of markings on forms DL25. (DL25 is the sheet the examiner records driving faults on). That definition is: "Steering: erratic steering, overshooting the correct turning point when turning right or left, both hands off steering wheel or hitting the kerb." Now, I am going to say, this isn't a suggestion that people should try to drive with one hand in their lap on their driving test (nobody should be trying to make the test harder to pass for themselves). This was all just to combat the misinformation that continues to be spread, because it is "Common Knowledge". Much like the "You mustn't cross your hands" myth, driving one handed is not itself a fault; it is all about the quality of the steering, not the method used.
@paulqueripel3493 Жыл бұрын
It may not be a test fault but rule 160 of the Highway Code says should. If it said "must" it's illegal to do the opposite, should means it can be used against you for an accident or going to court for something else.

@@FoxyFlare1 That seems ok FF. Obviously, you can mistake at any point in your driving career but they become less and less as you acquire more and more experience. After 43 years of London driving since 1980,I made a silly mistake on Tuesday Night. I rushed back to my car to beat the traffic after a football night match but in my haste, I could not see, properly, but did not want to wait as the traffic would soon have built up.. As I joined a busy road in heavy traffic,I could not see and stopped inches b4 a bollard separating the 2 lanes!!. In the car, you should have £10 for emergencies or petrol etc. Your phone if you break down. Water. Change for parking metres or supermarket trolleys etc, A towel to help clear the windows and a cloth and, ideally, keep your petrol nearly full as in Winter you might be low and not want to stop in the rain or snow or be able to if a Tanker is filling up. Good Luck.
