You’ve a great way of communicating your thought processes and taking constructive criticism. I hope you get more time to create content and for your channel to take off even more. You represent where a lot of us are as far as “bedroom” producers go so we all want to see you get great results!!

Hey thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind words!

Ha you're very welcome, and thank you too. Glad to help. Like everything else, tuning drums takes practice. One thing I will recommend is to use your finger as a "mallet" instead of a drum stick for tuning. You get a softer tap with your finger and that will reduce all the wonky overtones that can confuse your ears. You'll hear the fundamental pitch better. Anyway....great job on everything overall. You know you did okay because all you needed to to process the drums was some EQ and compression. Basic stuff, right? You started with thoughtful decent tracks. I think that snare sounds pretty good. Not too ringy to me. Nice deep tone to it. If you just gotta kill all hints of ring, try one of those thin muffle rings. It's like a drumhead ring that goes around the edge of the top head. It WILL MURDER all traces of ring and overtones. They work. I use them sometimes on really fast stuff when I'm just bashing the snare and I need really quick tight smacks. The muffle rings work well. Anyway, again, awesome series. I really enjoyed it.

Thanks so much Greg, much obliged! I'll go further with this line of videos once I get my new heads and snare wires all set up. I've got some new cool ideas to try out now!

If you’re not doing it already, automation is the secret of the pros. Don’t be afraid to automate that kick level up during passages where it’s getting drowned out. If that causes problems then you probably need to do a little bit of EQ cutting in other areas to leave room for the kick. You can also side chain compress so the kick ducks something else out of the way just a little bit to make room for it. Sometimes a mix requires a little bit of all those things, and sometimes only one of those. I automate like crazy and it makes a huge difference.

I never messed with drums before but that does sound difficult (tuning a 12 spring all at once) lol best of luck to ya man

Thank you! I'm determined to learn to tune better, but sheesh it's been an uphill climb so far!

Fun series, thanks for sharing that! I'm like a noob that pretends he can tune drums. It feels like a video game to me where I haven't figured out the goal or the rules yet. I bought an old sonor rock set many years ago and set them up in my jam room as a drummer 'attractant' (and a Workingman 15 bass amp, a fender blues jr, some mics, etc). I'm a sax player that has caught the recording bug off and on. I can get my drums with new heads in ballpark tune these daze but usually expect/hope any real drummer will do what he wants with them. Oh yea, I was hearing in my mind some extra reverb or some slap ambience to show off the kick in that exposed part. :)

Haha, it is like a video game! I'm still struggling to beat the first level :) That sounds like an awesome jam space you've got, and some great instruments in there as well!

Well Thats it, I'm off to buy a drum kit and although you struggled it still looked fun and challenging especially when there isn't any pressure from a client. I'll have to hire a room a few times a week because I live in a terrace. Bring on the pain :)

Oh that's great! Best of luck to you in your drum journey! It has indeed been challenging, but rewarding as well.

Wow, that high pass on the overheads really surprised me! Sounds great in the mix, same with room mics. The ring on the snare is fine, IMHO. Check out my latest video that has drums that were recorded with microphones. Man, your videos really want me to do a breakdown of one of my own mixes. What do you use for the screen capture?
@YHRS4 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah, the hi pass feels kind of wrong, but I'll be darned if it doesn't seem to work. I'll go check out your video! Is your new username a new channel, or the same one? Oh and I use OBS Studio (freeware) to do my screen capture. It's a little fiddly to set up the first time, but once I got it dialed in, it's done a good job. And you can't beat the price :)

They're definitely pricey toys! I got each of these after months of keeping an eye out for a good price on the used market. They're total gravy in a home studio, but I just had to have one. Then two 😁

You might’ve solved your own problem when you said that you could hear it in the recording but you couldn’t hear it in the room. Maybe try throwing a mic in front of the drum, arm a track, and monitor the tone through headphones as you tune. Who knows it might work.
@JimmyBlimps4 жыл бұрын
Maybe the answer is in the problem: try tuning the drums while monitoring on headphones and see if that makes it easier.

That's actually a great idea! I'm going to give that a try right now :)
