The artist Jean Gerard known professionally as Moebius draws with sensuous magic. His life story is amazing. His family moved from France to Mexico when he was young and he wandered on the flat Mexican desert without fears: He said it was magical: The flat landscape, the light, the colors all inspired him to become the great artist that he became. He was obsessed with drawing every day of his life. He is a Master. Every project that he touched was touched by his Magic. Jodorowsky is also a magician story teller, the two together make "The Inca"l one of the greatest graphic novels ever published. Thanks for honoring this great work!

Damn straight! I fell in love with THE INCAL when I first saw it in Heavy Metal magazine eons ago. It blew my mind as a teen by introducing me to mystic concepts and realities as adventure. John DiFool annoyed me at first until the story, at the end, revealed his true role in the Great Scheme of All Things. The story's beautiful and profound to me. Both Moebius and Jodorowsky, among other influences, are partially responsible for me becoming a professional artist in later years. Thanks for bringing it up, Quinn!

I love the Incal and Metabarons. Both comics are amazing. Can't wait for your review of The Metabarons. When I saw the documentary about Jodorowsky's Dune, I immediately thought about the visuals in The Metabarons and how mindblowing it is. Bilal's earliest work is of course highly derivative of the hatched engraving style Moebius was the best in the world at during the late 60s and early 70s. Compare uncolourised "Exterminateur 17" with the Airtight Garage. Bilal really came into his own once he started using colour and an almost "photorealism recolourised" aesthetic round the time of the first "immortels" book. Druillet was entirely unique. Great to look at but not so great to actually "read" coherently. I also really enjoyed the Dionnet/Gal collaborations.

Maybe Jodorowsky's ideas are a great case of "Good ideas, just not the right place to put them" with Dune. Some great things came from that. Fun fact: Devil May Cry began life as a Resident Evil game. The Capcom producers were smart enough to make it it's own thing instead of either scrapping it or making an inappropriate sequel.

Hard to say if Jodorowsky's Dune would have failed if he had secured the funding to begin production... From some of the Giger illustrations and Moebius story boards, it really felt like it had the potential to compete with 1982's Blade Runner to become the greatest sci fi movie ever .... ... but of course its all about the execution, since the lack of funding means they never began production at all, we can only guess how good or bad it could have been but never be sure of it ...

The movie drew a LOT of story elements, not just a few art style points. It also pulled a bunch from the Heavy Metal movie. The real issue is that we don't have a real good definition of this kind of derivation, and how to credit those that you are drawing from. You cannot copyright or paten an idea. Everything we create, we do so with some kind of source of inspiration. But, if we admit we got an idea from someone else's work, then our work is deemed of less worth, and that the originator should get more credit, despite there being no legal reason for this. So, we hide our influences, and pretend that is was all our original ideas.

EVERYTHING comes from Moebius. The Fifth Element is literally Moebius fanfiction. Besson brought in Moebius and Mezieres (of Valerian) specifically saying to them, I think Hollywood stole your stuff wihout crediting you so I want to hire you directly. Blade Runner is the same, Moebius fanfiction! Ridley Scott wanted Moebius to design it but Moebius was busy. So he did a cinematic fanfiction of the Moebius style from 'The Long Tomorrow', a Heavy Metal strip he did with Dan O'Bannon. Moebius is the origin of cyberpunk like Akira as well as Star Wars.
@system-error

@@jeffeppenbach George Lucas is interesting, he gets accused of ripping off but he actually pays homage to his forebears in very direct but subtle ways. One of the most interesting is that he slyly credits Moebius as the origin of Star Wars. It's hidden in plain sight, right at the start of ESB. That probe droid is straight out of Moebius's The Long Tomorrow, he paid Moebius to use it. That's him opening ESB by giving credit to Moebius for inspiring it all! But he also has forewords in Moebius art books and stuff like that, he always helped the artists who inspired him. Kurosawa is another guy he helped when Star Wars was a hit, many of Kurosawa's greatest films were made after Lucas helped resurrect his career.

It would've been incredible had it been made, but you do strike at a good point though you may not have realized. But sometimes when we learn about some creative work we initially catch glimpses and pieces of it before consuming it officially, and these initial leanings can be incredibly evocative, inspiring ideas and other avenues to explore, and sometimes this can be more valuable than the full thing itself.

Have this book here. It's OK. Better than the Technopriests. Concerning Star Wars's Coruscant ripoff, it actually goes way back the the 1940s in Asimov's FOUNDATION series. Coruscant is nothing more than Trantor, itself an extension of Asimov's New York in Caves of Steel.

I'm glad Jodo never made Dune the film.....I loved the doc and the what if...but The Incal is pure genius and the fact that Moebius drew it is simply mesmerizing. I'm lucky in that I have a signed hc copy from 1988 and treasure it.

I'd say that Incal wasn't Dune "inspired". It was his fever dream and is deeply metaphysical in it's fool's journey. I love Mobius's work. It is metaphorical, satirical, and often very deep while it's deep taste for the bizarre and uncomfortable is something I enjoy. Now, the Metabarons are definitely based off of Dune. I also love Metabarons.

Almost every video title now is you reading/watching something for the first time and me always staring in shock thinking:" you're only NOW getting to this [fill in title of film/book I read/watched 25+++ years ago]!!??". Then, my shock turns to sadness as this says much, MUCH more about my age than anything else.😢😉😏🙄

Coruscant was actually inspired by the original concept designer for Star Wars Ralph Macquarie in the early 1980’s making concepts for Return of the Jedi that scene may have come from Incal but Star Wars had city planets for a while.

Might have to play around with the lighting a bit, or find some solution to the issue with the glossy pages shining in your vids. You're a clever guy though, I'm sure you'll figure it out 😊💜

I love The Incal, have the super oversized edition that only had 999 copies made and it’s a prized possession. Jodorowsky’s stuff certainly isn’t for everyone but there’s absolutely nothing else like it and he’s as fiercely creative as anyone who’s ever lived.

It is only fitting that the Fifth Element took from the Incal. Both Jodorowsky and Luc Besson have toxic relationships with women. Let me just say Alejandro wasnt only talking about metaphorical rape. Oh yeah and he basically wrote Dune fanfics and lucked out with some great artists. The pacing and stories are just stupid. Moebius and Gimenez could do so much better stuff wihout Jodorowsky,

The year I lived in France (89) all my spare money went on Moebius/Gir books. I knew a guy who owned some "encre d e chine" originals and they were very spectacular indeed. I have a very nice black and white A3 format edition of the second Incal book (in France it was originally published over six volumes, published over some years - the one shown here is the collected edition). The first volume of the Incal was actually first published by Humanoides Associés in 1980, the series just having concluded in time for them all to be available by my arrival in France. Another notable Jodo/Moeb collab was "the eyes of the cat".

I'm so glad you pointed the Attack of the Clones (and basically all Prequel Trilogy) as an obvious example of homaging or ripping-off Jodorowsky, as well as Besson's Fifth Element! Many, many artists, directors, writers...were and are inspired by Jodo's masterpieces and, you know - credit should be given to the old master! And yes, it would be great to see the review of another Alejandro's masterpiece, Before the Incal, this time beautifully illustrated by Serbian maverick artist Zoran Janjetov. Final Incal is also very good, albeit different, maybe because Ladronn's different visual style. And let's not forget After the Incal, a sort of first attempt to finish the Incal saga with Moebius again as an artist! This is the work that some consider a failure (Jodo included), but is also a notable entry in Jodoverse.

_The Airtight Garage_ has got to be the wackiest thing Moebius ever did. He made it up as he went along, and even deliberately introduced plot traps for himself, to see if he could work his way out of them later on.

All 3 parts of The Incal are amazing, Edena is another more abstract Moebius masterpiece.
@whssy
@whssy 3 жыл бұрын
All SIX parts.... if we're going to nit-pick. Edena is a very weird piece. It was written over many years and can be almost incoherent at times. It began as a short piece for a Citroen marketing campaign and kind of "evolved" on its own terms, like "the Airtight Garage". Like much of Moebius's longer works I never felt as if it had a proper direction, but had some breathtaking artwork. By the time the third volume "Stel" came out Moebius had begun experimenting with very abstract art and it took a while for him to return to the final volume, so it kind of jumps around when read "as a whole".
