My mom worked 30 years in a retirement home. So this is a true story: There was an old women and it looked like she wouldn't survive the night. Her son came and read to her for hours. It looked like she peacefully died, as she didn't move. But then she began snoring so loud, my mom couldn't hold her laugh back and had to leave the room. The son was so cute, he read all night to her. Next day she stood up, as if nothing happened. She lived on for another five years!

Knowing me I’d have my final words planned but be unsure of when I was close enough to death to talk that I’d either say them way too early and be forced to pretend to be unconscious until I actually died to avoid ruining it or I’d hold off too long and die without saying anything. I don’t know how anyone gets the timing right so I usually assume “last words” quotes are more like “words said shortly before death”

I spent a long time searching for it, and eventually I found it! There are so many different contexts oh god. In the context of like, public speaking, or conversation, vamping is to stall for time for your audience. So you're just filling the air because of a technical issue. So here, they believed they were on their deathbed, so they were saying their last words, but then they realized they weren't quite dead yet, and needed to delay until their next opportunity to say their dying words
