That alone should tell you all you need to know about Roberts as a manager. I hope the Doyers keep him forever cause they'll never win a ring with Roberts at the helm. Well maybe if there's another pandemic then LA can take another 60 game shortcut to a ring. 🤣

Two cracks in the Dodgers this year that began to show late: bad defense and a .500 record in one run games. You can run up the score and dominate weaker teams, but defense matters in the playoffs, and the games are closer.

part of the issue with losing 1 run games is the new rule for extra innings with ghost runners. I don't know where to look but how about defense and close games over the last 10 yrs? I thin there will be a lot of surprises in MLB next year when the shift is outlawed. that's how the padres won game 4. they hit opposite to the shift. machado was seen beating this stuff out in batting practice, even the announcers mentioned it. but the dodgers defense ...? let it happen
@encinobalboa
@encinobalboa Жыл бұрын
The biggest problem is and has been the bullpen. Kenley choked repeatedly. Kimbrel was washed up before we signed him to close. Instead, Padres scooped up Hader while we were asleep. Dave has to go.
@Gunleaver
@Gunleaver Жыл бұрын
And in close games, Roberts' decisions are magnified. They might cost a run here or there, but when your run differential is as obscene as the Dodgers' was (+334, 96 above the next best team), there are going to be a lot of games where those 1-2 run-costing decisions are inconsequential. But in the one-run games, in extra innings, where every run is important, suddenly their effect is seen and the Dodgers lost a lot of those. 111 wins might be a lot, but according to MLB's projected W-L record based on run differential, they should have won 116.

As an MLB fan in Korea, I think the MLB postseason is special because the team that is not overwhelming often wins. In addition, I think people in USA like it when an attractive team with a unique story challenges the trophy. The LA Dodgers are overwhelming in the regular season, but I don't think they're attractive. The Dodgers seem to need one more starting pitcher like a gladiator, although they have made some improvements by signing Mookie Betts. Of course Dave Roberts should be fired.

From a padre fan living in LA this could not be sweeter. I feel for the Dodger players as they are a hell of a team with a great roster and just good hearted people in their line up. But the fans have been insanely toxic for years, so much so that my wife and I won't even go to dodger stadium anymore. There are plenty of good fans out there but the majority of the fans, radio hosts/tv announcers, and LA itself deserves this. When you're arrogant and disrespectful at the top no one feels bad when you collapse. I genuinely hope the majority of LA and their fanbase learn some humility from this. We all just want to enjoy a baseball game together, and we don't need the dodgers acting like another Raiders fan base.

I've been a Dodger fan for over 40 years. The issue I've seen with this team is despite all the talent, there really isn't a guy who's firing up the team and bringing the intensity needed to win in big games. Last night you saw 4 o 5 different Padres players doing this. The Dodgers don't have a player like Manny on the Padres. A player who plays at an allstar level, but also leads the team in intensity and is able to fire up the teammates in a productive way. Its hard to take as a Dodgers fan.

What some people doesn't finish to understand is that in Baseball what happens in the regular season NOTHING has to do with the upcoming once the Playffs begins. A lot of Dodgers fans get mad when the 2020 Championship* gets called a "Mickey Mouse" ring but each year it is proven right. A 60 game regular season favored them because they were loaded with talent (pitching and hitting) and for the most part they were able to remain healthy (something that is hard in a 162 game season). Not only this, but the pitchers were able to be fresh and this was clearly seen with Urias when he was dealing at the end of the season (and even Kershaw). Besides the few games, they were able to play in neutral fields and avoid a lot of crucial elements (crowd noise, weather, etc) that is mostly seen in a regular playoff series (ex: ATL in 2021 or SD this year). This year the Dodgers looked almost unstoppable and quite frankly, everyone saw them at least making it to the NLCS (especially since they didn't have to face the Mets). I don't think many people believe San Diego had a chance; yet, I dont think many people thought that Petco Park would be electric (since many call it: "Dodger Stadium South"). So yes "all" teams had a chance to win in 2020, but with the 2nd highest payroll in MLB and immense talent, the Dodgers were able to capitalize on the shorten season and finally win it all. Until they are able to do it in a full season, I think most people will still continue to call 2020 a "Mickey Mouse" ring b/c they continue to prove that they are choke artists in a full 162 game season.

The Dodgers 2020 championship has asterisks all over the place from not having to grind through 162 games, to playing all WS games in a tiny hitters park where most the HR's they hit would have been outs at Chavez Ravine to no crowds rendering home field advantage meaningless and till they win a ring in a real 162 game season the one they won in 2020 is a fraud. I bet if the regular season only had 10 games Doyer fans would still think it's legit, but 60 games is a joke.

I said it from the start of the 2020 season, no matter who won it, even if it was my Phillies, it’s a partial championship. Any team would have had to put a stamp on 2020 by winning it in 2021, and dodgers couldn’t do so. And here we are again in 2022, still no WS in a full 162. I also said, if 5 seasons go by after the 2020 “championship” and the dodgers still haven’t won a full 162, with their insane payroll and talent, that 2020 season is a complete joke.

If you expanded the playoffs to all 30 teams I think people would be horrified by how often a dogshit team would win it. small sample baseball is a glorified weighted lottery. that was the whole purpose of playing 148/154/162 games in the first place, to level out the variance. Under the 3 Rd system the best team record wise has only won about 25% of the time, and considering there's 8 teams that's basically only double over random chance since 1/8 is 12.5%. Still applies as a 3 Rd system to the best team since they get a bye obviously

I have followed plenty of baseball through the years since being old enough to remember doing so since 1960. Since divisional play started in 1969 with East and West divisions the importance of the regular season has been devalued. The addition of another division and wild card teams have corrected some of the initial inequities doing so. It is just much more excitinbg than prior to 1969 when so many teams had no chance by Sep 1. The Dodgers are just so similar to the Braves of the 1990s coming up a little short from having a great dynasty. It always helps to have two great starters for a short series including the world series, but the Braves had great starters yet there was another team out there a little better. . In the early 2000s very good Cardinals teams came up short while the 2006 team a little over .500 won the world series. It's Baseball. From all the sites I have read today about the recent Dodgers failure maybe the best thing to do is just to try a different manager. The Yankees sure fired many managers for the sole reason of not winning a world series. A pennant winner only was viewed as a failure by those great Yankees teams. This 2022 Dodgers team will soon be forgotten.

It goes back a lot further than the last decade. I've been following baseball since I was 7 years old, which was 1968. Through most of those years, the Dodgers have been a contender. So in 54 years, they've won exactly one World Series in a complete season (1988). The other two they won were in the strike season of 1981, when the playoffs were intentionally set up to create a Dodgers-Yankees World Series, and in the Covid year. Even the ho-hum nobody cares about them non-marquee franchise from Minnesota has done better than that. If not for the left arm of Sandy Koufax, we might be talking one World Series win in a complete season for their entire history in Los Angeles. Maybe two (1959 as well as 88). Which ain't so hot for a team considered on of baseball's showcase franchises.

Prior to 1969 the regular season counted as at the end the teams with the best records in the NL and AL would immediately play in the world series with no playoffs. (If we were still using this model, the Astros would have played the Dodgers immediately following the regular season this year). Now your record only means home field advantage, that said, with the playoffs being a thing a more mediocre team (like the Padres) could catch fire in October and win it all. To sum it up the regual season is a marathon while the playoffs (especially best of 3 or 5) are a sprint.

Baseball is a strange sport in which post season success has little to do with regular season record ... the postseason success depends on one thing and one thing only, that is, can you perform under pressure. The regular season does not have that pressure because THERE ARE 162 GAMES in total and one plays a single division rival 19 times!!! Dodgers are not built for post season & they simply cannot handle pressure! Most of their players, especially pitchers, and their management underperform when pressure mounts. Every year, they added great new players, because there is always that insecurity that their rosters are not enough to win the WSC (and if a rival did something, they will counter no matter what, remember Travor Bauer?) ... This has to be one of the most pathetic team in the history of sports. 111 win and get kicked out in the division round by a team who they beat 14 out of 19 times!

The Dodgers (my fave, btw) are a streaky team that has in recent years, for some reason or another, gone on a losing streak in the postseason. They are built for power and the so-called true outcome of walk, strikeout, or homerun. This team lives and dies as one. If one key guy struggles, it seems like they all struggle. It really is weird. This year is just like the last 10 not counting 2020. Stuff needs to change. They are the definition of insanity...☺

The Dodgers always have the individual star power and ability to make it far, but with the constantly rotating roster they never develop the chemistry to pull it off when they really need to. As a Padres fan, we don’t have the same raw talent of the Dodgers, but we have a TEAM behind the player-leader Machado. If the Dodgers ever want to be back in the World Series, my take is that they need to develop a team with genuine chemistry. Post season isn’t about who can hit the most home runs, it’s about the best team that can continue fighting even when the game/series seems over.

There's a lot more variance in baseball results than people realize. It's not that the regular season doesn't give us an idea of how the postseason will go, but even the best teams lose a number of series throughout the year, and one of those can easily come up, especially in shorter series. The biggest factor though is how a particular team is playing now. If a team is underperforming, then the results often follow, continuations of a team playing on the colder side. This was the case with our hitting, and we even had several Rockies pitchers who we should have pounded that tamed us pretty well. Our numbers at the plate over the last month had dropped off a lot, and stayed that way in the playoffs. If the playoffs were in July or August, we likely would have had an easy time of it. During the course of a season, we see different iterations of a team, with various degrees of hot or cold, and the party was held at the wrong time for us. It often is. The Dodgers were almost a .700 team this year, so to show how hard it is even for teams this good to win the WS, let's assume that playoff teams are only average and our expected win rate per game would be 70%. Let's assume we have this 70% chance to win the series, even though it's actually lower than that because the 70% applies to each game and there's less of a chance than that to win the series. So there are three series, and the chances of winning all 3 drop to one chance in three. So you do this every year and win one in three (0.7*0.7*0.7), and with the other two, fans are slamming their heads on the wall and feeling cheated. The actual chances of a .700 team against playoff teams of winning a series is more like 60%, which works out to about 1 chance in 5 of winning it all. So when the Dodgers only win 1 in 5, that's not just baseball, it's also math. I feel that we will be very competitive again next year and will again be hoping we'll be able to cash in on this 21.6% probability. We've come out on the wrong side the last couple of years and are due :)

They blew game 4 of the World Series on the craziest play this side of Bill Buckner only to bounce back and win games 5 and 6… they were the Champs in 2020. With all that said, they should’ve had more character and not lost to Washington in 2019 or San Diego this year. Those are bad loses vs teams they should’ve overmatched.
