In 1965, I was looking for my first car and had my eyes on a supercharged Golden Hawk. However, my father had to sign, so I ended up with a 1955 Packard Patrician that he wanted. The Packard was a great car, but I still lost for a Studebaker.

Nice video., I have a '65 Commander with the 194 cu. in six cylinder and "three on the tree" transmission with the Borg Warner overdrive. Chevy used the 194 in some pickup trucks in the late 1950's. The only difference I can see between mine and yours is that mine has the full wheel covers vs the smaller hub caps on yours. I always believed that the 283 in the 65 and 66 year models WAS a Chevy engine. My Commander had a complete engine overhaul at 120,000 miles a little before I got it forty years ago. It had the typical Studebaker rust in the front fenders, so I got a set of NOS fenders from Neumann and Altman. A friend with a paint booth on his farm put the fenders on and painted the whole car for what was then a ridiculously low price. I drove it the 30 mile round trip to my day job quite a bit for a couple of years before retiring it to pleasure use only. It has about 148,000 miles on it now. FYI there was a fancier version of the same car called the Daytona. More chrome, I think fancier interior, GM turbo hydramatic transmission and factory AC. Happy motoring!😊

@@waiting4aliens Really. I have always heard but never researched that. I've never seen one, that I know of, anywhere except in my Commander. It moves the Commander down the road as fast as I care to drive it. I can't imagine the 283 in that car. It's not that heavy. Does up to around 24mpg highway driving.

Studebaker did not use GM transmissions. They adapted "their" Borg Warner trans to the GM engines so people with V8s would often be fooled and think it was a power glide because Studebaker did a 2nd gear start

In my teenage years, I had some friends who were strictly Chevy fans, or "Bow ties in the eyes" as another friend would say. I also had some friends who would look at a car, and see the interesting points of the car, good and bad, regardless of the brand. I liked Studebakers, and have owned a total of 7. My Chevy friends didn't have much to say about my Studebakers that was good since they weren't Chevys! When I went to visit my other friends after buying my first car, a '61 Studebaker Lark, 6 cylinder, stick shift with overdrive, they spent a fair amount of time looking the car over, including the chassis and suspension. They then wanted to go for a ride in it. They appreciated the differences in the car from other cars, and in particular, differences in the car that were better than other cars. These are the type of people who really enjoy cars because they didn't have blinders on that exclude all brands except one. By the way, in the late '60's and on into the .70's, Studebaker sold a lot of bell housings for '65 and '66 automatic transmissions. Jaguars used Borg-Warner transmissions, and the Studebaker bell housings were used to put Chevy engines into Jaguars that had automatic transmissions..

Studebaker engineering was pretty solid while styling tended to conservative. Once they rolled into AMC, they outsourced engines. I can see Studebaker installing a Chev engine for test and comparison. How many are out in the world like that? Most development test cars were kept close to the chest and generally crushed at the end of their test.

@@daledavies2334 Studebaker was not affiliated with AMC. As far as the Chevy engines go, all '65 and '66 Studebakers had Chevy engines. It was not a test.

I bought my 64 2-door Commander in 1967. It had the Studebaker 6 upfront, and a 3-speed manual shift on the steering column. Even though it was as unreliable as anything out there, it has a special place in my brain where memories of cars gone by resides. It did not like modern highway speeds, like 70 - 75 mph. As a result, in the 56 months I owned it, the engine had major rebuilds twice, and the rear end was overhauled once. Still, I loved my Studebaker, when it worked. If it was possible, I'd love to have one again.

I also had a 61 348 Belaire that got rear-ended and I needed a car to drive while the Belar was at the body shop. I took the 283 out of the Studebaker and put in an L79 350 horse 327 I had sitting on the garage floor. I never drove the Stude with the 283, but that 327 yanked it up and down the road very nicely. @@uncouthgent Yeah, try getting parts for Keller era Mopars. I had to glue a rubber step plate from a '51 in my '50 because the '50's were rubber over steel, while the '51's are just rubber and the holes don't line up with the nipples. And you're not going to find parts for fluid drives and Gyromatics, either. Engine parts? Not a problem, since they used that flat head six all the way to 1968 in the Power Wagon. Bullseye headlights? Nope. Replacement plastic interior pieces, including the steering wheel? Nope. Right threaded studs? You can find the ones for later Mopars, but not for the earlier ones.

The 65 and 66 Studies had McKinnon Engines in them . McKinnon was the Canadian engine subsidiary of GM . One commenter in here said that the six was still Studebaker produced. All six and V8 engines for 66 and 65"s were Chevy through and through. The South Bend engine plant was kept going after the assembly lines ran silent in order to finish the model year out in Canada and the U.S. , and , to produce replacement spare engines in Studebaker's that would take only Studebaker engines in them .

Hamilton had far better build quality than South Bend and it has been reported that the 1965 Hamilton Studebakers are of higher caliber than early 1964 (late 1963) South Bend builds. Also to note Hamilton supplied CKD kit shells for foreign assembly, partly due to preferred tariffs in British Commonwealth states. The last CKDs assembled were in Haifa, Israel in 1967 with 1965 or 1966 shells. Other than the Chevy/McKinnon engines, the main running change for 1965 would be solid color steering wheels (white early in the year, black later). 1964 South Bend cars have two-tone steering wheels.

My first car was a 1960 Lark 2-door with the 259c.i. and 3-speed auto. Painted it gloss black with chrome Cragars, chrome wheat burners(?), cheater slicks in back with little VW size wheels in front. It looked and sounded great…but was not fast. I use to pretend that it had a manual and could shift the auto to sound like it did. One time on the block I revved it up in neutral and dropped it into drive. The rear axle broke and I went clunking up the street amidst much guffawing from my friends. This is about 1972 I guess and I drove to Frost & French in DTLA to buy a new rear axle unit. It was less than $100! The mechanic at the gas station station I worked at installed it for $50 and I was on the road again… Subsequently among the many cars I have owned were three Peugeot wagons that I used in business, a Citroen DS, a few Saabs including a Sonnet. It all started with the Stude’!

My parents bought Studebakers for years, but when they stopped using their own engines and installing GM engines my father said "IF we are going to get a car with GM engine it might as well be a GM car." Since our local Chevrolet dealer was a crook we switched to Chrysler products. So by using GM engines Studebaker drove the last nail into its coffin.

The automatic transmission is the same Borg-Warner unit Studebaker had installed since the late 50s. Part of the reason why the GM engines were an easier installation was because Checker Motors Corporation utilized GM 6 cylinder and V8 engines along with the same Borg- Warner transmission. Checker had engineered a bell housing connecting the GM engines with the B-W transmission. Studebaker bought the bell housings from Checker Motors allowing the easy change to GM engines. Yes, I know the automatic transmission Studebaker used was procured from Ford changing the name from Ford-O-Matic to Flight-O-Matic, but the small block Ford V8 did not fit as easily as the GM. Hence, not using Ford engines.

Is your '65 an original-paint car? If so, look at the firewall...closely...as you face the underhood area, look to the left on the firewall....I bet you'll see a faint "BLUE" or "LAG" (Laguna Blue) handwritten in something like wax crayon before the car was painted, and it bled through the paint. A fellow with a Hamilton-built '64 showed me that on his car, and I went home and looked at my '66 in Timberline Turquoise has "TURQ" handwritten in the same place.

Someone did a "scuff and shoot" paint job, as we called it when I was in the Air Force body shop, probably in the 90s. The color they shot is lighter than the original Laguna Blue. It's not that great of a paint job. The paint is "dead" and peeling on the trunk lid and the poor prep work shows through the thin layer of paint on the rest of the car. It looks good from 10' or so. It's presentable and suffices for the driver it is. I will take a look and see if there is any china marker with the color name on the firewall.

As a corporation, Studebaker did not fail. On the contrary, in the early 1960s the board of directors began diversifying getting away from relying upon auto production as the sole means making money and keeping the share holders content. With the closing of the main automotive production facilities in South Bend, IN in Dec 1963, it was basically the board of directors signaling their fairly imminent intent ceasing all automotive ventures. The last two models years of production at the Hamilton, Ontario, Canada plant were carried out fulfilling contracts for their dealer network. For the size of the Canadian production facility, Studebaker of Canada was actually able to return a small profit. The head of Studebaker Canada, Gordon Grundy, was more than enthusiastic keeping production going; however, the board of directors ceased automobile production in March 1966. The lead up to Studebaker getting to the point of pulling out of auto production stems from poor managerial decisions starting after the war : Paying their employees higher wages than the other manufacturers, not taking strikes when they should have and then taking strikes when they shouldn't, poor quality in the 1953 model year, poor financial management, reading the market wrong, etc. In the end, Studebaker was successful after getting out of the auto industry. Remember, companies are not in business to make whatever product. They are there to make money and that is it.

AMC survived into the 60s due to success of valued priced Rambler compacts, but the decision by CEO Roy Abernethy to expanded into full size and personal luxury/sport (Marlin) models starting the in the 1965 model year dragged them down into the 1970s. What kept AMC alive in the 1970s and 80s was Jeep.
