Ser Jaime Lannister, on his way to Riverrun, stops at Castle Darry to sup with the land's new owners, to meet with his cousin Lancel, and, just maybe, to atone for his sins.

An amateur reading of George R. R. Martin’s A Feast for Crows, the fourth installment of A Song of Ice and Fire. I make no money from this project, and upload these videos as a hobby and to provide an alternative to the official audiobook recordings. Everyone watching is strongly encouraged to purchase a copy for themselves:

and coming off of an all-time great with our previous Victarion chapter, we get another banger Jaime chapter. this one back-to-back with Jaime III AFfC is some of the finest character writing in the series. so many fantastic moments, from Jaime not wanting to even look at Red Ronnet (how much more in love with Brienne could he be) to poor sweet Pia smiling upon being presented her rapist's head, to Jaime's going out of his way to avoid breaking his oath to Catelyn, to the honestly beautiful and beautifully honest talk between Jaime and Lancel at Darry. this is the sort of thing that, as an author, you have to work very hard to earn: your characters growing and interacting like real people, not doing anything immediately world-changing or exciting, but simply being human. Jaime takes on an almost fatherly role in this chapter, first by wingmanning Peck and later, of course, with Lancel. "seven save me, i wanted to be you" is such a heartbreaking line, and we get an interesting mirror here to Jaime's relationships with Loras and Tommen. the central conflict of the books stems from Jaime being a father, of course, but as he admits at the time of Joff's death he never really acted as one past knocking up his sister. embracing the responsibilities of his role as a knight and Lord Commander of the Kingsguard is a major part of Jaime's redemption arc and his growth as a person, and one of those responsibilities is being something of a mentor to junior knights like Loras (and, to a lesser degree, family members like Lancel [this family duty is here emphasized by Jaime abandoning his Kingsguard whites for the Lannister colors; we deal with Jaime Lannister in this chapter, leaving Ser Jaime of the Kingsguard behind until the Siege of Riverrun] and even Tommen). especially in the cases of Loras and Lancel, Jaime and the reader see something of himself in these boys, and our present, more developed and more honorable Jaime knows that encouraging them to make their own paths in life--to fill their own blank pages with better deeds than his own, to be true knights and even good men. indeed, our old child-defenestrating, sister-slammin' Kingslayer may seem to us as readers a thing of the past, papered over in noble Kingsguard white by Goldenhand the Just...but no redemption comes without a reckoning, and Jaime Lannister is poised to face the stone cold, vengeful face of his past acts (even those he really didn't have much of anything to do with) sooner than he would like. also, in this one Jaime gets aroused and immediately thinks of Brienne. because of course he does.

It's fun to think about his redemption and eventual reckoning here, especially because it's the first time he hears about Stoneheart, which will probably be a big part of making him face his sins.

Great reflection. I’ve read and listened to these chapters many times over. You nailed it - it’s not swords and sorcery here, it’s honour and humanity

Thanks for keepin it up! The chapters really get a lot longer… you spoiled us dropping 2 chapters a day but those were mostly 15-20 minute reads. I appreciate you not rushing, the continuity is really good, voices matching throughout, good reading pace… slowing down when reading these is a must even for speed readers in their head… but reading them aloud is a different thing altogether! I honestly prefer listening to a good audiobook over reading myself mist times… if done right I can lay back and really visualize the whole thing in my head better than watching it in a screen… I do think in pictures tho so it kind of makes sense that it’s easier for me to “fall into a book” when I’m just listening to it… that said I have literally listened thru dozens of times, I use it to fall asleep, you have definitely claimed the top spot of my favorite readers! Sadly for me, they’re putting ads on the older more popular ones… but hopefully you’re getting a bit of Adsense from it… I almost always let them play for ya. Thanks cheers!
