THe character Jaime Lannister sneers at this assumed nobility and honor. JAime lives his life as he is perceived: a privileged son of a great lord, an elite swordsman, a man who sees no value in honor, an oath breaker who laughs at the term Kingslayer. Jaime does his best to live up to the awful reputations, with arrogance and pride.
Anything claimed against Jaime he can use as his mask, his shield, he protects himself with the worlds judgement. Yes he killed the king, yes he broke his vows, and yes he’s got no shame. Or at least that’s what he’d like everyone to think.
“The things we do for love” when stated by a man we would all condemn based on the information available to us at this point - at first this statement may ring hollow, but when we learn more of Jaime later on, you can see that the things Jaime does for love, has truly been what holds his life hostage in many ways. We’ll come back to this here shortly.
But for now lets take a look at Jaime’s reputation as it follows him deeper into the story.
Jaime Lannister, Game of Thrones, ASOIAF, A Song of Ice And Fire, GRRM, George RR Martin, House of The Dragon, Tywin Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Tyrion,

eh, I can certainly see where you coming from, and overall I do see that double subversion.... but even by asoiaf standards jaime was a pretty poor knight when it came to the honor aspect. You have quite a few examples of more honorable "sers" throughout the story, ned, barristan selmy, brienne, hell even the hound it's a double subversion because he was a tortured soul who at first wanted to be that knight and then later will have his arc moving back into that direction. But let's not pretend he always has been all along. Guy pushed a 7 year old out the window, I mean come on
@GRB-tj6uj

@@Toxodos that might be right. But as I see it his crimes don't represent his true ethical core. His formative experience is doing the right thing in killing the Mad King and being rejected as an immoral self-serving opportunist. It's clear that he adopted.his smug persona as a shield against the negative opinions of others, but on some level he also wanted to be that kind of person. His trauma is caused incongruity between his true self and the public perception of him, but if Ned was right all along about him this gap disappears and he doesn't have to deal with his trauma. So we see this pathological drive to be the kind of person people think he is, and the charade falls apart when he loses his sword hand an literally can't be that person anymore. EDIT: one of the true ironies of his character is his incestuous relationship with Cersei. On the one hand it means he could, in the eyes of public morality at least, never live up to the chivalrous ideals he believes in. This is one of the reasons he cares about the opinions of others: he desperately wants the approval of others because he's never sure he's actually a good person. His doubts about his relationship with Cersei are always haunting him. Someone who's self assured about their moral character would shrug off the "Kingslayer" epithet. But on the other hand his devotion to his lady is very knightly. If it was anyone else we would be speaking about perfect chivalrous love

Another point I love about Jaime is the subtle, one-way relationship he has with Ned. Jaime did somewhat respect Ned, as both a decent fighter and an honorable man. The unfair and sadistic execution of Ned's brother and father by the mad king was a traumatic experience to Jaime. And he did think that he was making justice for this, among other things of course, when he killed the mad king. But Ned despised Jaime all the same. This is very interesting for both characters, as it puts them both in a grey area. Jaime starts as very "black", and we see more and more "white" touches in his shade of grey. Ned starts as very "white", but this shows that his unbending honor leads to grossly oversimplifying and misjudging someone, which is a big "black" stain in his shade of grey. Though the two characters barely interact, the existence of Jaime also makes Ned a much deeper character that just "the perfect good guy".

Ned seemed to have beaten Arthur Dayne. That was a personal hero of Jamie's. A lot of the tension between them was because Jamie couldn't claim to be the best living swordsman while Ned was alive. If you want to be the man, you have to Beat the man!

I always love the hypocrisy of the way the Kingsguard are viewed compared to Jaime. Men like Gerold Hightower were legends and heroes despite actively silencing the disgust of a young Jaime as he watched Eddard's family cruelly tortured and murdered by a mad man. Similarly, Jonothor Darry, like Hightower, comfortably sat by and allowed Rhaella Targaryen to be raped and harmed by Aerys and even encouraged Jaime out of helping her ('we are sworn to defend her, but not from him'). That's why it is so heart-warming when Jaime does the total opposite and instructs Trant to come to him should Tommen begin pushing for cruelty and spite.

What about it as postmodern? I see comments like this a lot, but if someone wrote characters that were thinly veiled variants of Oedipus or even King Arthur, they'd be labeled as subversive or some nonsense because many people think all historical literature was written like Hollywood movies. I am naming both of those characters because they were both undone by weird incest, Oedipus with his mother and King Arthur with his half sister. Oedipus gouges his eyes out and goes into exile when he learns the truth and Arthur's tryst births a bastard born of incest, Mordred, who later mortally wounds Arthur in a duel during a battle.

i firmly believe it was originally planned in the books, for golden hand the just to be the fated hero, weilding lightbringer, with Breinnie the most loyal knight in the sven kingdoms by his side, Jon &Dannie the last Targaren his allies, and Bran the next three eyes Raven, Sansa the queen of winterfell, and Tyrion their wise concil, to eventually unite together against the evil beyond the wall. I couldn't agree more! This is one of the BEST written characters ever, in my opinion. He is what I like to call a "no-win-situation" character. Where there is never a choice of good or bad, but only bad or bad, bad or worse, or good (that will turn out VERY bad) or bad... This character is very realistic too. Jaime Lannister is essentially the same character is Ned Stark, albeit given only awful extremely difficult, no-win-situation choices. Many times he has no choice even. Like the family he's been born into... Jaime Lannister reminds me of Hamlet. A man trying to do the right thing, be good, be honorable, but thrust into a scenario where to do good one must do bad, and to get justice one must do wrongs. He cannot choose who he loves either. His heart chose Cersei. It's all just a RAW deal, and it's brilliant!! Even as the show decided to go about ending his story arch, I liked. Jaime is give one final no-win-situation, to go to be with not only the love of his life, mother of his children, and queen, but one of the last members of his family; when they are in their most dire circumstances in need of support the most... His choice is either to not go (and thusly live forever in guilt & shame with a broken heart, forsaking not only Cersei, but also the life of his last unborn child with the woman he was born to love) or he could go to King's Landing to be with Cersei when the city inevitably falls and try to do what he can to try to save what matters most to him, as well as potentially lessen the overall bloodshed (knowing that Cersei is certainly doomed, King's Landing WILL fall, and most likely he will die)... The perfect ending to this amazing "no-win-situation character" in my mind... "The things I do for love..." Although, how Jaime and Cersei actually perished in the show I really did not like one bit, and thought was poorly executed and stale dramatically for 2 such memorable, powerful, essential, and well-crafted characters that we followed for SO long in ASOIF.... Just my thoughts... LOVED this video! Good stuff!

Jaime’s hand was not “senselessly” cut off. It was done for a political purpose. Vargo Hoat had recently betrayed Tywin and switched to Roose Bolton’s side. Roose is about to betray the Starks and switch to Tywin’s side. Hoat can’t follow Roose to Tywin’s side after betraying him. Jaime’s hand is cut off to make it harder for Roose to switch sides, as Roose may be blamed for the maiming. This is why Roose has the conversation with Jaime at Harrenhall. Roose essentially offers to send Jaime along to King’s Landing so long as Jaime agrees not to blame Roose to Tywin.

Instead, he chose to satisfy his sexual desire knowing perfectly well it would be fatal if a servant or a maid sees them. So, he put his sexual desire above his own life, Cersei's life and his children's lives. Jaime is shown as a savior of smallfolk yet he doesn't care that he occasionally need to kill one or two servants just because it's a medieval castle for god's sake, it crawls with servants, and I'd emphasize again, there's a big chance Jaime had killed off witnesses before Bran. He says "Things I do for love" plural. At least in Bran's case he hesitated cause realized the witness was highborn. If it was a servant, Jaime wouldn't think twice. In his pre-amputation chapters he thinks he and Cersei are demi-gods like Targaryens. Such an attitude towards smallfolk is typical of any medieval highborn people, but Jaime felt it ten times stronger. He would put himself high above any other lord. And remember that line? "If Cersei wanted to kill someone, she wouldn't send a catspaw, she'd send me". Here we are, through the years Jaime had likely already killed a number of witnesses and yet he kept setting people up again and again.

In the books, Jaime follows the mad king on his throne after killing Rossart, grabs him by his hair and slits his throat before severing is spine with a thrust of his sword. I think this is a pretty meaningful detail to highlight that, though he is breaking his oath, the kid rushes face first against the monster that ruined what had always been his biggest dream and showed him the true evil that some men are capable to commit. In the show, where Ned says that the kinglsayer stabbed Aerys in the back, seems like Jaime is slimier than he actually his, at least for me. Jaime was manipulated by Cersei, into leaving his rightful place as Tywin’s heir, and completely broken by watching how his king, to whom he he had sworn an oath, treating everyone around him like insects undeserving of the basics human rights… and, maybe worst, observe his heroes enable the rapes of the queen and every horrible act that Aerys’ ordered. He was a kid, he was alone, he was lost, he was scared and, when everything crumbled, he still would’ve fought against his father’s men to protect the crown… until Aerys’ stepped over the line by ranting about blowing up half a million people with that psycho of his Hand. I really like Jaime, he’s my favourite character in the series and in the books… and I think that deserves a good ending, at least one that feels like a good ending in his eyes: with his honour restored.

It’s very fitting how Jaime and Brienne’s growth mirrors one another’s. Brienne knows exactly who she is and what she stands for, but is forced to confront the reality of a world full contradictions. Jaime on the other hand knows exactly how cruel and hypocritical the world is, but after losing his hand is forced to confront who he truly is deep down and what he really believes in. … But then they sort of forgot…

Those Jamie chapters almost tricked me into thinking he was redeemed. But then I reflected on the fact that throughout all that inner monologue and self reflection, he has barely had a passing thought about his attempted murder of Bran. He thinks about his perceived evil deed of kingslaying even though there is nothing to forgive there, instead of his true evil deed. I can't forgive him yet, but perhaps a little chat with Stoneheart will get him feeling a bit of remorse.

personally, i liked jaime from the very start. i liked him because i knew right away that there was something more to him. and the only reason i thought that was tyrion. because tyrion was being ridiculed by people outside and inside his family, when i saw jaime treating him like a brother or an equal, i was taken aback. i thought if this guy is really as bad as it's shown, how come he's not picking on the easiest target for him, his dwarf little brother. it's a small thing, but i knew right away that there should be something more to this guy. and there was.

Best character undeniable. What makes a great character is growth, loss, forgiveness, and rebirth. Either as a good or bad guy, which changes by the end. We need to see the rise or fall as more of a choice rather than forced upon. Jamie, at the start, was a high born nieve knight with a focus on family rather than duty, honor, and cause. But after he was imprisoned, he started seeing his family and the war as well as his guilt clearly. When he travels with a woman of the highest level and with great honor, he falls in love with someone other than his sister. Seeing how wrong he was thinking, he'd never find someone better. He kept his mouth shut and buried all his pain to make the bad guy we knew at the start. When learning, he didn't have a choice but to kill the Mad King. Not for family or duty. But to save millions, it wasn't for Tywin, wasn't for Cersey. It's his duty to protect all people not just do as told. But nobody knew. And he took the roll of king slayer. With the truth never known. In my eyes Cersey is the one that manipulates the incest, forces it, and Jamie has to, rather then want too. And never knew what love was cause Cersey took that from him. He might have fallen for the 16 years and grew to love it. But never wanted it. But only knew it. So kept doing it. Kept the guilt. And once he finds a path in Breann to be a knew. He loss his hand and his fighting power, and became just the average man. It broke his state of mind and let him grow out of self centered Family first honor second. And by the end of his life, the man was more Ned than his father. And isn't worthless but honorable. And it perfectly done. He grew the most and his only flaw was Cersey.

Jaime was the most amazing character up until season four or maybe five IMO. He was at his very peak as a character during the time he was captured. I know he got his hand cut off, but he was a husk of a person after all that shit happened. He was pretty much useless and his name and presence no longer commanded fear or respect from anyone at all. We never even got to see him fucking people up with his sword, so if you haven't read the books I could see how people might have felt underwhelmed when seeing him in action. I actually haven't read them personally, but I can't help but feel that the show did him very dirty (especially in season eight).

I think it’s safe to say that the majority of the fanbase unequivocally didn’t care much for Jaime early on. I can also say that same fanbase felt entirely different by the end of the show regardless of bad writing or not. That’s how you make an intriguing character btw, it’s just a shame he met the same grim ending as every other remotely established character.

I think it would be nice if he could reclaim the lordship of Kasterly Rock for himself, withdraw most Lannister troops to the Westlands, begin repairing relations with the Riverlands and the North, while leaving Cersei alone in Kings Landing, not bothering to even acknowledge her, when Aegon comes for the Iron Throne. It might make her desperate enough to marry Euron as some have speculated she might.

I don't think tywin is the best written ,the books and the show give him a lot of undeserved reputation,for example he should be regarded as much as a late lord like walder frey but he doesn't,he faced no consequences for eliminating two tax paying families from the crown,and while the red wedding did won him the war on a short term this was the worst possible move for the legacy and position of his family in the future
@Jem1381
@Jem1381 10 ай бұрын
@@juanig4198 yes but youre missing WHY Tywin can get away with what the Freys cant - 1) The Freys are a relatively new house and therefore none of them have the respect of the lords and 2) Tywin obliterated everyone who wronged him or the Lannisters in any way, he's the most powerful man in Westeros and therefore can get away with more than any other lord would - he is a key piece of the Game of Thrones, and therefore he cant be touched, anyone caught speaking ill of the Lannisters when they are on the throne would be executed, look at how Vaemond died after speaking ill of the Targaryens, granted the Kingsguard in Tywin's day was nowhere near the caliber of even King Aerys II's Kingsguard but they still are willing to beat Sansa at Joffrey's command so i wouldnt put it past them to execute anyone who they are commanded to execute - Cersei and Tywin dont take threats, real or percieved, lightly and will resort to murder at any given opportunity - the reasons you listed actually make Tywin a better written character, not a worse one

To me, Jaime stakes his ego on his unwillingness to be a hypocrite. He sees his faults and embraces them (in his mind), and that's why he has such distain for Ned Stark. To Jaime, Ned is this outwardly, 'noble and honorable' guy, but he's guilty for tomcatting around on Caitlin (which we know now he didn't) and he's guilty of cowardice for NOT seizing the throne after the Mad King was killed (which is kind of a backward compliment coming from Jaime; like perhaps Jaime felt Ned would have made such a better king than Robert or himself). It also fits in with Jaime's protection of Brianne--I think he sees Brianne as the genuinely noble creature he barely believes actually exists before travelling with her. The script writers for GoT should have revealed the wildfire plot so Jaime could have killed Dany at the end after she torches Kings Landing--I STILL have such a problem with Jon doing that instead--and then, nominating Bran to the throne?? Please! The show's ending was SO botched on so many levels. They couldn't have just extended the final season by a couple more episodes?? They really needed to bring it around properly full circle, and the audience deserved it--Seriously, they could have done the show without all the Sparrow craziness or Theon's elaborate torture tale if money from HBO was the problem, but I doubt HBO was the 'problem'--GoT was too popular to believe they wouldn't have funded a couple more episodes. It's more likely to me that the scriptwriters were exhausted from juggling way too many subplots and tangents in the air for far too long that they just gave up.

I dont think Brienne can be considered wholly good, although she is close, but she has pretty human moments that are less than purely benevolent. What comes to mind for me is her treatment of Podrick early on, as well as her tendency to treat those she looks down upon with conceit and disdain. She's very prone to thinking more highly of herself than others, and can be rather unsympathetic at times. I would argue Pod himself has the best argument as being purely good by nature. Granted we've never had his PoV, but everything we've seen him do or say shows him to be remarkably nice, loyal, selfless, and caring dor others, if more than a bit naive. Even though it's played for comedy, I think the fact prostitutes refuse his payment is meant to be nearly the ultimate indicator of how good his character is. It easy to say oh he's just good in bed, has big package etc, but really, really think about it. A physically pleasing customer is not reason enough alone to justify that behavior for a working girl. I think Pod's meant to be themetic to the story. He's the best, a good man, a good servant, a good warrior, a good lover, he's essentially naturally good at anything he gets to learn, but he's a nobody. He isn't the hero, no one cares what he thinks, says, or does, he wields no power or influence, and he is often little more than an afterthought or annoyance in the minds of those he serves until they take time to reflect on him, whereupon they unilaterally find themselves moved by the quality of the young man. I think it's meant to speak heavily about how Westeros reflects our own reality whereby performance and merit, despite being held as virtues, are in fact incredibly disregarded and not represented in human behavior and, by extenseion, human society by and large. Tl;dr: Pod > Brienne, and everybody else too.
