Great review ! I agree with you:" the flow " of the cards in this game is not well resolved. My house rule nr 1: draw 3 ocupation cards keep 1. House rule nr 2: at the begining of the game draw 20 ocupation cards , keep 10. This is your "personal deck". When you have to draw a card , draw 2- keep 1- the other one goes to the bottom of the deck ( thx Mr Li ). More control is always better in a heavy euro !

I don't see a reason why you couldn't deal 3 occupation cards at the beginning and/or turn the 3 Viking bonus into draw 2 choose 1. It might also be fun to.deal 5 and have a draft to start the game. You could also have a "player power" variant where everyone gets a blue card that starts in play. really there are endless possibilities if your group is not a must play RAW group.

imanujakku Ya there are plenty of cards in the decks to do that. I do have an inkling of fear that maybe it swings too far the other way and the cards become too powerful. I guess that's probably hypocritical. Maybe you are dealt or draft 3 cards to start but you can only play one of the starter cards. And then the other draw cards are draw 2 keep 1.

I don't mind them helping decide the game. If player's play "equally" a little luck giving the win is OK with me. I just don't like to sit with dead cards for multiple turns.

Totally agree about the cards and I will definitely try one of these variant ideas next time we play. When we played for the first time last night, a couple people got cards that were very helpful early in the game and they had an advantage that was very hard to overcome. My cards, on the other hand, were...meh.
