I think she's meant to have some type of allergic reaction to colored clothes, I think cause of the dye used in them, so any club especially school wise would be ok with a student with an allergy to use something that won't kill her.

I love the idea that taking off the rubber tip of a fencing sword instantly makes it sharp. Also there fencing saber which doesnt have rubber tips on the end
