I never got to see Van Halen live but I did get to see their biggest fans.. another set of brothers who played heavier stuff.. and were said to look at each other and say "Van Halen" before every show. Inspiration doesn't even begin to cover what this man gave us guitar nuts.
@khkartc4 жыл бұрын
During the Smithsonian interview that he did a couple of years ago, Eddie commented on why he’d never been a studio musician-“because everything would just come out sounding like Van Halen.” I was walking down Juan Tabo in Albuquerque in the summer of 1978 and happened to walk into this club called the Hog’s Breath Saloon. A band called “Traveller” was playing and the lead guitarist was none other than Tim Pierce.
@JohnCline4 жыл бұрын
I don't remember the Hog's Breath being on Juan Tabo, it was on San Mateo and my band, the Sox, played there a lot. I first heard Tim when Traveler played Ned's, my previous band, the Planets was the house band there and Traveler played there a lot when we were off. Because of Tim's playing, Traveler was maybe the only band that could get me to go to a club on my nights off.
@khkartc4 жыл бұрын
I did go see Traveller play in the summer of ‘78 at the Hog’s Breath (which by that time was adjacent to Pizza Hut on Juan Tabo and Mountain). I was just trying to make it sound similar to Tim’s first time hearing VH. I’d actually heard Tim and Traveller about eight times before that, stretching back to 1975, but always at church dances. If a dance was planned and Traveller was hired to play, all the young people at church knew it would be a good time. One of my favorite memories is New Years Eve 1975 (or 1976?) when Traveller played four sets (from 9 to 1) and I had a lively date with whom to dance. I remember hearing about the Planets but never heard you play-probably because I never went to clubs when I was in HS. Traveller played a killer version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Tell Me All the Things You Do,” which I think they eventually got tired of.

Great memories! First time I saw VH was when they first toured through NYC, '79 at the Palladium, Edward was amazing, he just floored everyone! A lot of people think VH first NYC appearance was opening for Sabbath in '81 at MSG, but was actually at the Palladium in '79 with Robert Fleischman opening. Edward had his Echoplex housed in that army surplus missile shell! I was able to meet Edward and the rest of the band when they returned to MSG with Gary Cherone on lead vocals, at the meet and greet, Edward and crew were very friendly. RIP Edward Van Halen, thanks for sharing the great stories.

I haven't gotten that far in the video, but I have changed my playing recently by following Tim's advice about playing lighter and how much more tone you get by doing that. So I started to think that it seemed that Ed played with thin picks which before I couldn't make sense of. How did you get such a rich explosive sound with thin bendy picks?? It shows the wrong headed thinking. So I wonder if Edward knew this too? (Guess I had better watch the rest of the video!)
@fab.silva11194 жыл бұрын
@monkface what type of pick do you use? I use Dunlop Tortex .73mm.
@monkface4 жыл бұрын
@@fab.silva1119 I've been using the red jazz III. Actually the Eric Johnson one, which I don't think is anything different than a regular jazz 3, it just has his name on the package! I never thought I'd use such a small pick but I love it. I also switched to 9's and I'm picking a lot lighter. I'm playing faster and cleaner and more relaxed. Pretty fun actually. I saw some pictures where Eddie's pick was bending quite a lot and I was surprised at the time but now I'm starting to wonder and rethink it. But I'm 10x more sad that Ed will not be around to answer that question.

This is beautiful, Tim - thank you for sharing. "Alien" was always a word I associated with Eddie as well - despite being from a younger generation and hearing the debut Van Halen album for the first time in the late nineties, I can distinctly remember having the same reaction that so many people must have had hearing it when it was first released: "What in the hell was THAT?!" Even then, with tapping an established part of guitar players' technical vocabularies, there was something so distinctive, so otherworldly and unique about Eddies playing and sound that hearing it for the first time became a milestone moment. Just a day after my friend played the CD for me in his bedroom, our little fledgling high school rock band had our own desperate version of "Runnin' with the Devil" primed and ready to go for school assembly. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful stories and years of experience with us. You are a monster musician and such a humble, sweet guy.
