Having spent a lot of time in London and Italy, I find the people of both countries to be very hospitable and extremely nice. Some of the best hotel customer service we’ve ever experienced were in London (Conrad St. James) and Praiano (Casa Angelina). In fact, every interaction with merchants in both countries has been outstanding. Weather wise, Italy wins by a mile.

Here are some ways to soften towels without fabric softener: Add one to two cups of distilled white vinegar to the rinse cycle of your wash. Vinegar can remove residue and detergent buildup, and restore towels' softness and absorbency. It can also freshen the scent and remove mildew odors. Add half a cup of baking soda to your wash load. Baking soda can remove odors, grime, or chemicals that have built up and caused stiff, scratchy towels. It can also help you use less detergent, which means less soap build up. Add tennis balls or dryer balls to your wash load. They can beat down the fibers and give towels a softer and fluffier feeling. Wool dryer balls can also speed up drying time. Use less detergent than suggested. Soap residue can contribute to non-fluffy towels. If you live in an area with hard water, you can add water softening tablets to your laundry. This can help reduce the mineral content in the hard water and prevent build-up on towel fabrics.

I can only compare UK vs Italy in a lopsided way. I am British by birth and have lived in the USA, for many decades. I married an Italian American, who is a lot like Carlo, very friendly and loves working on projects around the house and gardening. All my friends want to ‘ borrow’ him! We have visited Italy many times and we both love the country. His grandparents emigrated to the US in the early 20th century. He has a wonderful American extended family who have always treated me so warmly . On one Italian trip we were able to visit his family of origin, who were farmers. They served us a delicious dinner that all came from the farm. They were delighted to meet us and we loved them. Because we have a tendency to talk to strangers all over the world, we have had many conversations and good experiences. Even in the UK, people seem to open up to us. However, I do find a level of reserve in the UK, that is not present in the USA or Italy. And although I still miss a few things in England, I much prefer life in the USA. I also learned to ‘cook Italian recipes and often make my own pasta and traditional holiday foods. So my kids grew up with mince pies and iced cake at Christmas and ricotta pie and pizzelles at Easter!

Honestly, there are both wonderful and not wonderful things everywhere one goes . That's the beauty of travel.... not only are there great things to see, do and eat, but also the people. Even though we are all different, in many ways we are the same and it just takes a little getting to know each other. 😍😍

A thing that shook me last year when I stayed in my house in Kingston, is how quickly night falls and so early compare to Normandy. The comparisons you made are very similar to mine. When I moved to Kingston in 73 it was so different, it was like a village where everyone knew people, but no longer. It is like a foreign town to me now....Drivers politeness and being courteous is unknown in France, as for customer service, the less said the better....Still, very blessed with the river walks and all the parks. Lovely to see Skye and get a glimpse of your Dad. Great little video, thank you.

I lived in London for many years and now I am in Italy and I have to agree with most of what Nicki and Sky said, in England customer service is more polite, people want to help whereas in Italy they think they are doing you a favour. Weather wise definitively Italy is better, it gets cold but you get sooo much sunshine... and that makes a difference to your day (at least mine). Regarding beverages is true in in England you have so much choice! A nice Chai latte with your preference of milk for example, which in Italy does not exist really. Then again Italy is not a tea culture is a coffee culture. In terms of community I also find Italy more welcoming, at least in small towns where everybody knows each other and people say hello on the streets. Also in Italy there are places (at least in small towns) where elderly people can meet for a coffee and chat or play cards and that makes a difference to their lives as they can socialise and don't spend so much time alone. All this to say England is lovely and Italy is lovely🙂

Thank you Nicki & Skye for the chat. Regarding hard water in Italy, I will never forget my first trip to Italy in 1970 and bringing my shampoo that I was using in NYC, where we have soft water. I washed my hair and the shampoo would not rinse out. From that experience, I learned that no matter where you travel use the local shampoo, for example in a hotel, which is formulated for that local water. Safe travels!

My mother never used dryer sheets or softeners in our wash growing up. Our water wasn’t hard or soft, just perfect. She preferred to hang dry but has we got older, 5 of us plus she & Dad, there was a lot of laundry everyday.

I found your conversation very interesting because I shared some of your experiential background. In 2000 to 2004 I lived in Belize park in London. I worked at the American school. In 2001 after traveling to Tuscany many times beginning in 1992. I bought a place in Vicki antique classical region. Thus I have lived in both of your lands, but I have also spent most of my life living on the West Coast in California USA. There are major differences among these three places. There are differences that are regional in Italy and in England and in the US. As you can see by our politics in the US right now, we are on the verge of a civil war. The red state versus the blue state. In London, especially in Belize Park, where I live for three years, there was very little recognition among the shopkeepers that I frequented. My barber knew me, but given the fact I was at work five days a week. I really didn’t get out and about in the area. There’s no question that London can be an expensive place and there is a thing called the London tax. That is the fact you pay more because you live in London And trades people charge you more. People were polite for the most part but we’re not overly friendly. They definitely avoided eye contact when you were walking and especially on the underground. If you were looking for lower prices, you went out to the countryside. In Italy after we bought a place we became very familiar members of the community in.Castelnuovo berardenga. It is located in the Chianti Classico Trail and is a wonderful town. We connected with the people at the bar. Centrale and after they gave up their approval, we were accepted in the community. Every time I return to the local grocery store, I receive a welcome back. There is no question. The cost of living is cheaper in Italy than in London. Further, if you enjoy Tuscan cuisine, you will be very happy. There are very few non-Italian restaurants in the province of sienna. Recently there has been some presence of Chinese and Japanese. I have not eaten there because I get great Chinese in Japanese in California. There were no French restaurants or Spanish restaurants or Indian restaurants such as you would find in London.. Italians like their own food and even their own regional food and wine better than they like other food outside their region. They are provincial. In California by contrast, I have lived in this area for 55 years. It is Palo Alto, California the center of Silicon Valley. Steve Jobs used to live three blocks from my house. This is an area that is made up a very wealthy people. Success is what counts. Children are under a great deal of pressure to the degree that there was a suicide cluster on the local train tracks. If you’re not successful, you don’t count. Further in the shops you are unknown. My wife used to know the people at the cosmetic counter in Nordstrom’s, which i is a department store on the West Coast of the US. I have known a lot of people here over 50 years and still it is a lonely place now that my wife and son have died. I am going back to Tuscany for two weeks arriving December 15 in Montevarchi. I will be staying with a friend that lives there but visiting my old stomping grounds and Siena. I will also be visiting the Veneto region. Hope you have a happy holiday season.

Italy better food weather…here better politeness although driving wise I will say people are getting worse at indicating and saying thx and more aggressive as we are now a bigger populace the driving is more stressful! And the roads have just as many potholes as I remember Naples to have!

That was lovely! Thanks to Sky for her perspective, it was really interesting and so nice to see her! ❤ I guess every place has its advantages and unique appeal and there will always be things that you miss from other places. You guys are pretty fortunate that it's so easy to travel to very different countries! As much as I appreciate my home country of Aotearoa/New Zealand, one does feel a little isolated and it's a big deal and expensive to travel to Europe.
