A Few Minutes of Fun
In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between fifteen and thirty minutes usually, depending what we're playing with.
Today I'm playing with some mop-up book pages (you saw the mopping up happen in the Tissue Paper over Crackle episode) and my Printed Tissue paper by PaperArtsy. I'm using both PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics and PaperArtsy Mattints to colour the botanical imagery, and there's some lovely mopping up to enjoy in this video too!

Hello Alison! You have to love it when a video / technique is so perfectly timed to a current project. I was just thinking about using the Mattints to color in the images on my 3x5 cards but hadn’t yet thought about combining them with the Fresco paints. YAY … perfect idea! Also, by seeing you use the tissue paper on those book pages, it also solidified the idea of using the tissue designs on the backs of my cards so they’ll be double sided. I want to finish the 3 that I started a couple of weeks ago before moving on to the next batch. I love the pages made during your fun play time - something so simple and yet with such lovely results. I have yet to actually tear a page out of an old book! I often use manufactured book pages and love the look of it. I bought a set of encyclopedias from 1952 for $10 with the idea of dismantling them but alas, they are still intact in the box I brought them home in. They say once you tear out that first page it gets easier! LOL I would love a deep dive into mediums and how they interact with the Fresco paints. I have a variety of products including all of the PaperArtsy glazes. I’m currently experimenting with clear gesso on the 5x7 collage journal project and am a bit surprised by the variances within a product type. I’ve used 3 different brands so far and they all have different finishes from smooth to rough. I haven’t picked a favorite yet but I need to use up what I have before buying any more and/or having it get wasted - art basics clear gesso dehydrated to 1/2 a jar and got hard - sadly, to the dumpster it will go… at least NOW I’m actually using my supplies! 😂 Thanks again for all you do to encourage and inspire! I'm so happy to have offered up just the right video at the right time for you!! I'm sure you'll have fun mixing the Mattints with the paints... you can get some lovely colours and finishes. Somehow they add lustre to the paint colours, a sort of glow compared to the usually chalky finish of the Frescos. Brilliant to hear that you are using your stash now... so much better than having to send dried-out products to the dumpster. Love the idea of the double-sided cards too, and tissue will certainly make that an easy thing to achieve. I hear you on the old books and bookpages thing. Believe me, as a long-time lover of words and of literature and of books, it felt like a heretical thing to do at first! But I actually started by tearing up some of those hardback airport blockbuster type books and/or biographies of so-called celebrities bought in charity shops for a few pence. (If you're gessoing over it, or ripping it into small pieces, who's to know what the text actually is?!). And I graduated via old books which were literally falling to pieces, and in those cases I used the book boards as panels for other pieces of art too. So really they are getting a new lease of life. (I still always check first to make sure I'm not shredding something of real value, mind you.) Crackle mediums will be first up, but there will be a Deep Dive into paints/medium mixing soon(ish). PaperArtsy do have a range of mediums and glazes that is excellent value... smaller bottles than most, so you don't have to splash out for a huge jar of something that you might end up not using. Oh, I'm sorry to hear about rain stopping (outdoor) play... but great to grab some crafty playtime instead. And yes, experiment away... you can always water down acrylics for a translucent effect, and if you haven't any pre-printed tissue paper, you can create your own using stamps (but make sure to use an Archival or permanent ink for that!). Hope you have/had a lovely few minutes of fun for yourself.

I don't have a plan for them as yet... I don't tend to create with an end result in mind. I let the process unfold as I go. So far, these haven't let me know what the next stage is going to be. They might go into a journal; they might get trimmed to cover a tag as a background. I don't know! Happy you like them as backgrounds for now!

I have followed you for some time, and your work in the theatre always fascinated me. I enjoyed hearing about Shakespeare and am always interested in learning about how to use different products. While watching today I experienced an “A-Ha” moment regarding the title of your channel. Words - precise, exact, carefully written and spoken, well defined, refined. You can absolutely use watercolours... you won't get exactly the same look, but it will definitely look great. You might need to put some clear gesso over the top of the tissue paper, as it's possible it might resist the watercolours, but it might be fine without. I would love to see a video on how to make a paint more transparent. What medium works best to make a opaque paint more transparent if that is something you know. Sometimes, I am looking for a certain color but can not find it in a transparent or anything close to it. Your painty/ tissue paper book pages are beautiful. Thanks for sharing

To be honest, my most-used medium to create transparent washes of paint is water! But depending on the finish you want, either a matte medium or a gloss medium or one somewhere in between will all help to get you towards translucence. But with each different brand, you have to experiment with the proportions to get the look you want. You'll need more medium than paint if you really want to get something approaching a translucent wash. I will certainly do a Craft Supplies Deep Dive exploring mixing paint with various mediums in the near(ish) future, but the crackle medium Deep Dive is going to be up first. Not all PaperArtsy stockists stock all PaperArtsy products (they have hundreds of stamp designs and beautiful paint colours besides the tissue - my tissue paper in fact features lots of elements from my stamp sets, but in much larger sizes)... so if you have trouble tracking it down, let me know where you are based and I'll try to point you in the right direction.
