I knew Phil from Ham Radio. I was not aware that he had passed away. He was a CLASS ACT! He will truly be missed. I had been very busy with my 2 careers (Engineering at AT & T Laboratories and Conducting symphony orchestras) that I only had a little spare time to talk on Ham Radio and hadn't spoken with him since last spring. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He is probably driving a vintage bus from the Pearly Gates to everywhere in Heaven and operating a spark gap transmitter up there. Phil, may you rest in peace.

Thanks Scott, thanks for remembering him and letting us know he passed. Guys like Phil are all but gone now. I was fortunate when I was a younger man to have one around. So much is learned from them. I remembered Phil when you visited him and many in the comments thought he was annoying. I was waiting for you to get back there. I didn't know him, yet I knew him well.

Lots of the crazy old men could be considered by some as "annoying", but that's just their decades of experience showing through, but, once you look past that, you'll be amazed what you see, and learn, if you're willing to look.

You could just say Phil loved life in general! He possessed a great deal of historical knowledge about public transit and transportation in general as well. While he never operated streetcars in revenue service, he *did* operate the first generation of buses that replaced them. That's kinda cool in its own right.

I began my career with Detroits in '77 with boat 4-53s and migrated to '53s in dump trucks, 71's in buses and trucks, 92s everywhere, and finally DD15s; long time member of the Detroit Diesel Guild; replacing blower drives in 6-71 buses a particular fancy, learning to work upside down.
