You dyed the Simon pd, which is probably one of the coolest and most used disc ever

Here's my pro tip: don't use a pot, use a metal bowl(that is similar in width to a disc) and set that on top of a pot like a double boiler. The rounded edges of a bowl versus a straight sided pot mean that you can use less volume of dye and have it reach higher on the disc. I am building up a collection of different colors of hot dips and can't store massive amounts of liquid, so figuring out how to do it with less volume has been one of my objectives. I keep quart jars of the dye, I pour the dye into the bowl, and then I put a jar into the middle of the bowl to displace some of the dye and again raise the level. If I need to raise it even more I can put a ziploc bag of water in the back half of the bowl to displace even more dye, that gets me up to nearly the middle of the disc with just a liter of dye to make and store.

man... i just tried everything you explained here. and my disc came out.... FIREEEE its so nice and worked so well. ! for those who dont want to ruin the pot. i suggest heating the water first with no dye. then transferring it into a larger glass bowl and add the dye. please correct me if im wrong ! it worked great for me !

Glad to see it turned out good and made you happy. The idea with the bowl is pretty good. I've also used the foil baking trays you buy in a three pack and just thrown it away when done.

Is there a way to make the pink and blue more of a blue if you add more dye? Or does it just stay purple?
@twocrowsknows28112 жыл бұрын
It just gets darker purple the more dye or time you add.
@jake_51582 жыл бұрын
I might’ve missed this in the video but when do you add the dye? Before or after the water is boiling? I’m assuming before. Thanks!
@twocrowsknows28112 жыл бұрын
I usually put the dye in as soon as the water boils this will usually stop it from boiling for a second so I leave it on and let it come up to a boil with the dye in and turn it off when you start to see the colored foam on top of the water. wait a minute or so after you turn it off and start dipping 👍

so you said the water can be too hot, is there such thing as too cold?
@twocrowsknows28112 жыл бұрын
Yeah it will take forever to dye if you don't get it hot enough or it may only give weak color. Remember I'm only using RIT so make sure you have the synthetic stuff
@twocrowsknows28112 жыл бұрын
A little tip about the new RIT dye. Since the red is not as bright as before I've been putting a few drops of "sunburst orange" with the "racing red" to make it pop a bit more.

How would you use powdered dye for this technique? That's what I have right now
@twocrowsknows28112 жыл бұрын
Not unless it is the idye poly. If it doesn't say poly it won't dye the acrilic and it will suck. If it is poly just add it to the water a couple seconds before it boils stir it up and turn it off when you see the colored foam

Won't the disc melt if it touches the bottom of the pot?
@twocrowsknows28112 жыл бұрын
Nah I've only warped them by laying a large portion of the disc against the bottom of a pan trying to use too little water and dye. If done properly with a few inches of water and only the very edge touching the bottom you will be ok
