Over the past few months, I have been developing a film-based replacement for Kodak Aerochrome. This "Tri-Aerochrome" or "Reto-Aerochrome" method is based on the trichrome technique but with a special camera that takes all 3 images at once. Then using a custom filter to create the necessary color layers, infrared, green, and blue.
The improved filter shown in this video

I'm still so impressed that this works. When you first brought this up to me I doubted it so much, but here you are walking around with a trichrome point and shoot as I lug around filters and a tripod. Great work man!

On version two of the filter holder, what is the 720nm infrared filter size that you use? I can’t seem to see or find that size on the actual page. I accidentally ordered the 52 mm and it doesn’t fit.

I was wondering the same thing. Want to make sure I order the right thread size the first time haha

This is insane, thank you so much for sharing!!! I am trying to print the lens adapter but the 3D printing places, they all tell me tere are some parts that are too thin. How did you manage to print it? Thank you so much again!!!

I have my own 3d printer and just used the basic settings in prusaslicer. I haven’t tried to use a printer company. You can possibly check your local library, sometimes they have 3d printers for you to use.

This is really cool! I see you layered a green and yellow bingo chip. If the green chips I have lean more bright, apple green, rather than the cool blue-green of yours, would it still be necessary to layer the yellow with it?
@teaandtechtime

I dont think you need the yellow. On my second version I just used a green filter

What thread size did you use for the r72 filter for the v2 holder? Definitely trying to give this a go but want to make sure I get the right filter size for the mount.

Does the fixed shutter speed and aperture on this camera enough to capture light through the 720nm filter ? Is there any compensation needed on processing the film ?

The images are under exposed on the color channels actually since the light has to go through the color filter and ir cut. The infrared channel is sufficient only slightly underexposed. I pushed this film 1 stop when I sent it off to get developed and scanned. I’m currently looking into options for getting more light to the film but it’s a much more complicated process…

I'm trying to follow your v2 guide to recreating this aerochrome IR Filter camera, but I'm not sure how you were able to pop the Aliexpress plastic color filters out of the frames they came in... Seems like the filters are plastic but the frame is metal so I'm worried about breaking the filter before getting it out of the frame... Any tips?
@teaandtechtime

There should be 2 notches in the frame that is used to screw the plastic filter into it. I used a pair of calipers (very carefully) to remove mine but there are special tools you can get.

as mentioned unscrew it with the two notches I just used a small flat head screwdriver and unreasonable force. The IR cut filter I had came mounted without the notches so I made my own with a hacksaw. You can protect the filters with masking tape both if you need to hacksaw and if you are like me and unscrewing the retaining ring with a flathead.

I had the 3d piece printed from a website online and it came out tiny hahahahaha.. will have to try ordering again. Might've chosen the wrong dimensions.

double check you are selecting the right units for dimension. A lot of times if someone designs something in US standard (inch) and you import it to 3d printing software to slice it, the software only can use Metric units so it results in the size of the model being reduced by 2.54 times.
