For what it is worth, Suzuki wasn't the only member of the Pancrase stable with a sterling amateur pedigree. Though Suzuki was an Olympic alternate, Takahashi was 4th in the freestyle world cup, among other honors. Between the two, Takahashi was actually the more decorated amateur. Which makes it even more impressive that Suzuki outwrestled him in spite of facing a large weight disadvantage. I'd also definitely dispute the notion that Funaki followed Bas Rutten in utilizing the guard; Funaki was using the guard even in his PWFG days. In fact, what people call "K-guard" today, following Neil Melanson's attribution to Ken Shamrock, is really the "F-guard", because it was Funaki that popularized it in Pancrase (though again, he could be seen using it much earlier). Great video, though and you make some great observations about Suzuki's technique and his similarities to Saku. They also both love the low single and the sweep-single.
