The buckle at 8:30 is as others have said a type of horse tack buckle. I have seen them used on halters, harnesses, etc.

Thats whats called a Conway buckle. Part of horse tack. Would have had a very thick strap of leather with holes thread in one side out the other and a hole would stop on the post. Thick harness leather that would be way too thick to bend.

Yep that’s what makes this hobby so interesting. I did learn that the big buckle is a Union or Confederate Carbine Buckle. Just hard to believe at a trashy site like that.

The coin type disk with the side loop is the centre part out of a swing terret for a harness decoration or swingle tree .

I didn't know it was called a Murphy fastener, but my father had those on his boat top and side curtains. Possibly from the late 50's early 60's.

Todd, it looked like a wonderful time together detecting with Scott. His personality would brighten anyone's day. The round find that looks similar to a large cent and gave Scott a shock is probably a top to a German style smoking pipe. Just as this culture liked to put the moving top on their beer mugs, the same preference applied to some of their larger smoking pipes. Again, I could be wrong, but it does look like one.

Yeah definitely need the 6” on that permission. You be surprised on what you pull out of the ground. Definitely the plate is a bucket lister for me. Great relics saved. I’m thinking of putting the 6” on mine the next time I go to the farm. But if you get aptx and low latency there shouldn’t be a lag. So idk what’s going on if you do.

Wow!! Congrats Todd, you an scott had a great day even if the targets were harder then usually to pinpoint/identify. Sometime there just like that. Just depends on the past history of the site an soil composition. When they are tough like this you usually find something amazing. An Todd you most certainly did my friend. A civil war breast plate. An amazing find it was. Congrats on the plate. Some detectors can only dream of finding one of those civil war breast plates. I'm sure that was one item that was on your list to find. The semi circular buckle with the large pin is called a CONWAY loop it’s for harness .

What Scott found was a weight for a mantle or hanging wall clock. A little j shaped hook would hang down from the works and fasten the round the ring on the bottom piece.

Those are some really grate finds. The one buckle you found Todd is called a Conway buckle it is a harness buckle. The big square buckle that Scott found is a Confederate Cavalry Carbine Buckle from the civil war or could be a Union Carbine Buckle also .Todd most of those buckles are civil war all but the dog caller buckle you can see that it is stamped steel the old ones are forged. You have found a very good place to detect.

Sure you know it by now, Scott's big buckle is a Confederate Frame Buckle, a really really good find. You don't see those coming out of the ground everyday. His other unknown find is a fly terret. A couple of excellent finds in the video, enjoyed it.

The buckle Scott found is actually a Georgia frame belt buckle and is very rare, they were only manufactured for the south. The prongs are missing but it is indeed a Georgia frame there are many pictures online of them.

Awesome find Todd. Loved seeing the look on both you guys faces when you found the war plate. Some times as I walk around here in town or even across the dunes I wonder what kinds of history is buried beneath. Metal detecting is illegal down town. I think they give special permission once something is uncovered when renovating something. Its not been long since they were fixing the foundation of one of the buildingnwhen they uncovered an old burial ground. It was thoroughly investigates and documented and then the skeletons were reburied and it was covered back up. Now there is one gentlemen who is of Minorcan descent and he is hinting the 964 Minorcans buried somewhere between here and New Smyrna fl. He's doing a historical book on his family and the colony that started in New Symnra under Turnbull and later walked from there to here in St Augustine. I do hope he finds their graves in my life time. You know I'm fascinated by it. God bless you and your family

Hey Gaye that’s quite a story. Is it illegal to detect on private property in town too? The remote beaches of NC make me think of pirate shipwreck treasure. I’m sure it is there. That area was settled so early I can imagine the old artifacts. The breastplate was a bucketlister for sure but I felt bad for finding it and not Scott. He is a great guy and generous.

I think you can detect on privately owned property with permission but you always get that. I don't know if anyone has ever detected on the fort grounds but I know it has been landscaped over the years. There is Fort Mose just north of town on the west side of the intercoastal and in the last 20 years they have started clearing and looking for artifacts there and now have a replica of it and do reenactments there. Its where the first freed slaves built. They have what they have found there displayed. There is also on Anastasia island a place called Fish island which belonged to Jesse fish back then . He was English and when the English left and returned it to Spain he was supposed to take care of the English property for the ones who left but as I understand it he was one of the first real estate scammers that Florida has become famous for over the years. Lol. His house stood over there till the early 60s and the kids would party in and around it. So they finally finished demolishing it. I don't know if anyone has detected where it was or not. I do know they are building condos there. Our quaint little fishing village with a drinking problem us no longer so little or quaint. In the last 30 years it has been over built badly. This apartment I live in was built in 1940 and my landlords family purchased it in 70 and now he and his neice own it and rent it out. I don't thunk anyone has metal detected here either. We have found fossilized clam shells in the white rocks he had brought in for the drive ways. I have q bunch and so does he. He's a fossil too. A 60s left over hippie. Lol

Todd, I know it's technical and too expensive, but a lot of those metal objects could be examined with a system that can analyze the makeup of the metal without destroying the objects. That would most likely pinpoint where it came from and what period. OF course The Lagina Brothers(The Curse of Oak Island",)have deep pockets and the Tech they use would really be great for us common folk ,so to speak:) Conjecturing , using experience is more fun tho:) Cheers, Rik Spector

nice breast plate. I believe it may actually be a box plate, I tried getting a good look at it at the end of he video. Look at the back side of it and take note of the location of the rusted away iron loops, I am sure you know, but if the loops are diagonal to the eagle it is truly a breast plate...if they loops are perpendicular that would make it a box plate. Either way, very nice find. some of the best things to find do seem to come from the most unexpected places ! I just found your channel yesterday, I enjoy your approach to story telling with relic finds ! Love it. Thanks for posting , I will be watching more as time permits. By the way that item you found shaped like a T with the holes in it if from a Model T. I have found those on several occasions and did not know what they were but that is was I was told by someone. Keep up the great work.

In your video I was able to see at least a trace of one of them, it is a small piece of wire you should be able to see a trace of the other one directly across from it. these were small iron loops embedded in the lead.@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives

@@MrTonyPiscatelle that’s correct. He played with Kerry Marbury at Monongah High School. Monongah was consolidated with other single A schools in 1979 into North Marion where I graduated. I played football in 1984 with Rich Rodriguez’s brother. Rich graduated a few years before me. I see now that I put above 1977 for Nick. He was in Monongah in 1967. His dad started the Idamay Black Diamonds. If you look at a map where Rt 19 and 218 intersect (Worthington) that was where his house stood. His dads service station and mom’s restaurant are still there today.
