As the first generation of ‘new’ Finglassians coming of age coincided with an oil crisis and rising unemployment rates, which saw a host of social problems arise in Finglas among a disenfranchised youth. Episode 3 of A Finglas Story - Communities Together, highlights how the media were quick to hold the area up as ‘the poster boy for how not to have a suburb’ and how an angered community decided to fight back. Community activists came together and worked to provide opportunities to harness a growing surge of creative expression that was event among the young people of Finglas. Dublin’s Millennium celebrations, in 1988, provided an opportunity to focus these efforts, and the 90s came with a sense that Finglas had turned a corner.
