Now you need to build a box to cover that beautiful engine box so it doesn't get damaged in case things fall on it from above deck. LOL Glad to hear everything turned out ok. you never know with fire how quick things can get out of hand. You did a good job of explaining how to apply fiberglass I've watched lots of folks try to explain how to apply fiberglass and you've done a great job explaining it and keeping it simple and it made perfect sense.

Lovely engine box!. Lefke you are correct in applying over sized pieces of fibreglass, as it adheres to the resin and it's difficult to reposition it. A tip for applying the second coat of resin, although it may be too late now, roll uphill with the bulk of the resin in front of the roller. This distributes the resin more effectively without pooling. Also, applying thickened resin onto the corners as a radiused fillet, before glassing, assists with the transition from one plane to another, helping to eliminate any bubbles. And it's easier as well. Keep up the good work, and thank you for the videos.

Glad that the fire wasn't more serious ! The boat is coming along very nicely. That soundproofing has a thin lead layer that deadens vibrations on the panels and the foam is there to absorb the sound. Looks like you picked a very good product👍 Keep up the great work!
@woodandwaveskayaks
@woodandwaveskayaks Жыл бұрын
Looks so good! Very impressed with your build so far. Perfect blend between old and new methods. Just wanted to put in my 2 cents. From a noise point of view you'd want to glue these panels rather than use fastners. The heavy layer "suspended" within the foam is what stops vibration and impact noise and by using mechanical fastners you create a rigid mount for this layer. It acts like a bridge where vibrations can travel over. For my work i used to do noise and vibrations measurements onboard cruise ships and rigid mountings and not suspended noise isolation does not stop vibration and impact noise.

The gaps from removable sections will also transmits a lot of noise. The ideal shape would have been a monocoque "lid", if that were possible.
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Жыл бұрын
Hmm and interesting point! We can certainly still glue them in. The tricky thing is that most likely at some point we will want to remove or modify the box sections so for now it’s handy. But before floating we think you are right and we will glue them in properly

Anyone who has had the pleasure of working on a yacht's engine would appreciate the access you have built into that engine box. Great work on the fibreglass and the explanation Lefke, it must have been a nightmare to get the fire call in the middle of the job. I have found a metal fin or washer roller very helpful for getting air out of the matting.

Thank you so much Roger, those are very kind words. We are very pleased with the engine box and the engines accessibility. We know we will maintain the engine ourselves so we have to make it as easy as possible to get the jobs done regularly. Thank you also for your tip with the washer or fin, I will definitely try that. The fire call was very stressful but luckily the outcome was all good! Thank you for commenting and watching.
@brianseager6388

i would not use a metal ribbed roller on mating they are more essential on csm chopped strand mat or using a chopper gun where you have massive build up and a huge risk of air entrapment what you did was very good ,top job just carry on what you are doing you have to watch out for misinformation in the comments

You know it’s a funny way to say it. But,, Fibreglassing is like wiping your bum. You can’t teach anyone how to do that you have to learn yourself. Fibreglassing is the same, Everybody has their own way. What works for one is not always the same way for everyone else. So your way of Fibreglassing is the right way for you. 👍👍👍👍 Good job 👏👏👏 I’ve done it all my life and every job is different and quite often I develop new ways and that’s still to day for me. And by the way what your doing and already have done is perfect 👍 well done 👍

You're getting gooder at fibre glassing. :-) Handy hint. Sometimes the fibres take a long time to wet out, and you are needing to dib dab a lot with the brush. If you can get an electric heat gun, and just warm the epoxy that has been applied, the epoxy will spread out and "wet" the glass much easier.

Wonderful job Lefke, I learned to fiberglass from my KZbin channels. You can look at it all day but when you actually do it is when your education begins, my first jobs were absolute crap, luckily I have years experience sanding! Wow, that motor box reminds me of a transformer toy, so trick, looks like fine furniture! It’s amazing how the technology of soundproofing has evolved, that stuff looks like a bulletproof vest! Bush fires must be so stressful and unfortunately getting ever more common. I had assumed that Lefke was of scandinavian rather than dutch ancestry so it was good to be put right on that. To start You chose the right resin product and that because the actual product/resin is manufactured by Dow or at least was and has been unless the Gougeon Brothers have changed their source. China has in a very big way infiltrated the Resin industry with a who knows what type of product and there are many others around the world that have joined the fray. I mention Dow because they have long been the reliable source of this product, having built their 1st plant in Freeport Tx they followed that with their 2nd plant in Midland Mi. just south of the Gougeon Bros. just to the north. They, the Gougeon brothers claim to have designed their resin but that's not exactly how it works...they only had to ask that certain parameters be met and the actual design of the product was left to Dow. It is advisable that anyone buying a resin product should identify the actual source of that resin. I do not represent anyone in the industry on this matter rather I grew up and around in the marine industry in its entirety. I have designed and built one off hulls and as an aside wood hulls incased with a resin product are typically not long lasting.

I love watching amateurs build boats! Why? Because it reaffirms that I'm a professional when I instantly see them doing things the wrong/hard/thoughtless occasionally dangerous way. Why didn't you begin sheathing the hull at the stern and work forward? You could have done them all in one hit instead of having to wait until you could walk on the previous one.... also any excess resin would drain to the limber holes to be used to wet out the next section.
