Hey there MR. 2 days ago I was in an Uber that burst into flames for some reason. I thought the Modern Rogue should definitely do an episode on Car Emergencies. Maybe a guide on what to do depending on the situation. If the car drowns you should smash the windows so you could open the door, or the type of smoke coming out of your car indicating the source of the problem The importance of disconnecting the battery so sparks don't happen. It could be a really helpful episode!

Yeah - switch on red wire, not black wire. Lay out the circuit on the glove first to get the wire lengths more accurately. Shorter battery wires means less energy loss from wire resistance and less chance of snagging the wire if you catch on a door or something. Keep the circuit neat. And, you never mentioned if the batteries are in parallel or series (series gives you 7V, but a smaller current, parallel gives you the 3.24V and twice the current from the battery pack). Also, I'd say that you should NOT permanently solder the batteries together like that. Use the connectors to connect to the zappy-zapper. That way you can unplug the batteries when you're not using the glove (extra safety) and for when you want to recharge the batteries (don't want the zappy-zapper zapping you when connected to a higher-current recharger).

Actually it's not the amps but how long it lasts for, if you have 1000 amps for 1 microsecond, like static electricity, it is safe. Also those voltage boosters is not 400KV, those are BS numbers. The length the spark makes is 20KV, and people with high voltage multimeters have measured it. 400KV would jump like 4 meters long, absolute balloney Edit: I have worked with these boosters, the exact one, and getting shocked hurts as hell, but aren't deadly, don't recommend touching them when on though

Ah sorry guys, it's not Volts or Amps that kill you. It's both..It's power that kills you. You need the combination of both to do lethal damage. Voltage is to break the barrier of your skin, the other is to pump the energy through you and dissipate as heat.
@Reddotzebra
@Reddotzebra 3 жыл бұрын
That is if you're going for the brute force "massive electrical burns and skin peeling off like an overcooked hotdog" approach, you actually need for less power if you just want to interfere with a heart. Then again, if brute force isn't working you aren't using enough of it.
@solchapeau6343

60 milliamps, across your heart, can kill you. It has nothing to do with heat. The electrical pulse interferes with your heart's rhythm. Imagine someone hitting a drum with a steady rhythm. Then you start slapping their hands with a different rhythm. They can't keep the previous pace.
@budjy1

PLEASE stop telling people that current kills you and voltage does not. Please. The resistance of the human bodies can vary greatly, but at any given moment it is fixed. The current is voltage divided by resistance. Since the resistance is fixed, higher voltage = higher current. Which means, voltage is EQUIVALENT to current, as far as your body is concerned. They are directly proportional to one another. High voltage is always dangerous, there is no point in calculating the current. The only reason stun guns and such are "safe" is because they deliver their high voltage over a very short period of time. They DO disrupt the heart, which is how electricity kills you. They just kinda hope that the short disruption won't be enough to stop it. It's usually true... Usually. So, it is absolutely the volts that kill you. And saying stuff about amps is just going to confuse people. Touching a wire that has multiple amps going through it at 5V is perfectly safe. (Assuming the wire is thick enough - you might burn yourself on the hot cable otherwise) Touching a wire at 1000V that only has little current going through it is definitely not safe, since the current will spike the moment you touch it. At the end of the say, it is indeed the current that will stop your heart. However, it is misleading, might make people come to wrong conclusions and just generally a dangerous statement. So please stop spreading it.

I've characterized one of these units before, and they're rather interesting. A high-ratio flyback converter charges a high-voltage capacitor that's directly across the output, with essentially no voltage limiting other then the breakdown voltage of the air between the output wires. Based on the distance they will arc, I estimated that the peak voltage they provide is around 100kV (not quite 400kV, but still impressive). The average current is indeed quite low, but the peak current during each pulse is actually rather high (well over 100 milliamps, which definitely puts it in the potentially lethal range). And yes, I have touched the output while it's on, and it's definitely not pleasant.

This is me knowing hardly anything about electronics aside from what can be used to drive small computers. So this thing is basically like the reverse of a buck converter, instead of taking variable input and making it a stable output voltage, it takes a stable input and just tops the capacitor off until you see plasma?

i remember my physics teacher once transforming a couple volts into a couple hundred thousand volts - and then just touched it with no worries...because the current that runs through it is basically nothing - it generates some very nice arcs though the reason tasers are dangerous is because they not only have current, but through the capacitors store a lot of energy so they can release a lot of current AND high voltage...its all about the energy involved - the battery just doesnt have the power to push a lot of energy into you at once - a capacitor basically condenses the energy so that it can release all at once, which is what makes that setup dangerous - especially if you use a lot of them

Then you can run your hands over each other like a wizard balling up energy. then you can just grab to stun. also making the thumbs opposite leads you can make a sword that you can hold that is two swords just next to each other making a tight gradient out, making a Jacobs ladder sword. or you have two swords that when you have on in each hand and touch them together they spark. One sword that splits into two. Yep. I drew this up as a 15 year old kid. 30 Years ago. You made my something I thought about as a kid. Man what I could do with this knowledge. If I'm not entirely mistaken what usually kills you if you get electrocuted is your heart losing its normal rhythm and instead trying to shake itself apart like an overamped energizer bunny. In order to pull that off you really don't need much in the way of current, much less than one amp. Obviously the shock still needs to hit the heart for this to happen so it's unlikely, but when you're going for voltages high enough to potentially melt tiny chunks of flesh, that's still a consideration.

Welp the ending was a bit disappointing... I was expecting explosions. But in Modern Rogue fashion something caught fire and almost burned down a building (even with the fire extinguisher underneath the table)

Instead of soldering a live battery into the circuit -- instead of STARTING with the battery -- solder some spade terminals onto the batteries, then connect them when it's showtime. That gives you the option of changing the batteries (maybe you find that a different voltage would be more suitable) or ripping them off when things get hairy. Those pull chains break.

So a Taser is different than a stun gun. Taser brand specific products are designed to operate on an exact frequency and power level to interrupt the nervous system. It overrides your ability to control your muscles. This is why the optimal application of a taser is across the back roughly from the shoulder to opposing lower back, inducing it’s affect to your spinal column, rendering you essentially unable to move. Effectiveness is very dependent on individual, clothing, substances in the individual, and getting a good connection. It’s often described as a 50/50 shot of success on any given individual. A stun gun is designed for “pain compliance” wherein it’s simply relying on discomfort to distract/ward off/ intimidate an opponent. It’s entirely possible to power through this effect with brute force, the more exposures the less effective it typically is. However, this requires a determined effort by the offending party.

The capacitor in disposable cameras is closer to 300V, not 50V. It needs to be that high so it can trigger ionization inside the flash tube.
