FYI, this movie is what it termed a "Spaghetti Western", meaning an Italian production shot on location in Spain with an international cast and then dubbed into whatever language. These types of westerns revolutionized the genre in the 1960's when it was otherwise getting a bit stale. Also, to add to the international flavor, this is actually a remake of a Japanese samurai movie entitled "Yojimbo" by the great Akira Kurosawa and staring that absolute legend, Toshiro Mifune. If you get a chance you should really give that movie a watch as well as a companion to this movie and also watch Kurosawa's samurai masterpiece, "Seven Samurai" which was also remade in America as the western "The Magnificent Seven". Nice job on the reaction by the way, but then again you always do a stellar job at these vignettes.
@joebloggs3965 ай бұрын
For me Sanjuro is better than Yojimbo, and I'm certainly not the only one who thinks that. It still stars Toshiro Mifune but has more humour and character It was released 2 years earier that Fistful of Dollars so may have influenced it as well as subsequent spaghetti westerns. Mifune obviously being an influence on Eastwood too.
@chadpope35025 ай бұрын
The Yojimbo plot has been used several times. There's this one. There was an 80's B fantasy movie starring David Carradine called The Warrior and the Sorceress. And there was a 20's gangland style film starring Bruce Willis called Last Man Standing. All used the Yojimbo plot.

I'm so glad you mentioned yojimbo. I never realized that was Mifune, even though I heard he was in this before. I saw Yojimbo and Seven Samurai about 18 years before watching these westerns. Now, I've got to go back and watch Mifune's scenes again. Yes, Jade, I highly recommend Kurosawa's samurai films when you have the time. Still, I hope to see your reactions to For a Few Dollars More and Once Upon a Time in The West before that. In case it wasn't mentioned earlier, Akira Kurosawa was mentor to Francis Ford Coppola Stephen Spielberg, and George Lucas. This plays a large role in the samurai aspect of the Jedi in Star Wars and why Yoda reminds so many people of Mr. Miyagi from the original Karate Kid.

Apart from the 2nd in the trilogy For A Few Dollars More with Lee Van Cleef (which is excellent!), Clint also stars in Pale Rider and The Outlaw Josey Wales, both with very similar plots to this film and also lots of fun. Thanks as always Jade for an excellent reaction. Always nice to hear a fellow Aussie accent.

One of my favorite Clint Eastwood spaghetti-style westerns (made similar but in the US) is High Plains Drifter from 1973. It still has a lot of the style of this movie but also throws in a few twists and turns. I think you would love it. Clint's later western movies move more and more into the traditional American style western but are all still great movies to watch.

"Fistful of Dollars" is a remake of a Japanese Samurai movie called "Yojimbo", Japanese for Bodyguard, which was directed by the legendary Akira Kurosawa. When Kurosawa saw "Fistful" he contacted Sergio Leone and said "I liked my movie"... Eventually the two men came to an "agreement" about some money, etc. If you were to watch the Dollars Trilogy in it's storyline sequential order it would be "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", where Clint first acquired the Poncho, then "For A Few Dollars More" and finally "Fistful Of Dollars". It doesn't really matter though, just as long as you watch them and enjoy them.

If you are going to watch these 60's Spaghetti Westerns you should take a look at the inspiration for these. They are Samurai movies from Japan, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Seven Samurai. All made by the master, Akira Kurosawa. Seven Samurai alone is a master class in movie making. Some of the shots with the lighting, framing and composition...perfection. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg both credit Kurosawa as inspiration for them even getting into movie making.
@harryrabbit28705 ай бұрын
Right and since she's already seen this movie, "Yojimbo" ("Fist" is nearly a scene-for-scene remake) would be a waste so then either "Sanjuro" or "Samurai Rebellion" would be a good watch. OR even a good ol' "Zatoichi" movie (with Shintaro Katsu, of course) which are always fun.

18:50 "How did they hear/see that?" Um... guns are very loud. In real life, they're loud enough to give you hearing damage. Movies aren't allowed to give you hearing damage with their sound effects. Literally everyone in a town that small would be able to hear if someone started shooting anywhere within it. Even if someone was out shooting a few miles away from the town, they'd still be able to hear it in the distance.

0:52 Just saying this now as someone who absolutely adores Red Dead redemption 2. Do not look up anything for the plot or for the general storyline. There are many side missions so you can do as many are as little as you want to, it does affect small things but if you want to research before playing I highly recommend against it because you might be spoiled on a lot of the major plot points. I think it's the best case of storytelling in a game I have ever seen. It takes place as a prequel to the first Red Dead redemption game so if you want to continue with that journey there is definitely a lot of people who would like to see that as well but just make sure you don't do research or look up anything regarding Red Dead redemption 2 when you're playing it because I actually got spoiled to the ending. Even then it was probably the most impactful storyline I've ever experienced. Such a good game!

Of course when you watch a trilogy backwards, you're not gonna like the first 2 as much as you did the third. Sergio Leone, the director did the first 2 movies with a low budget and they were very successful in Europe. He was lucky to work with the Great Ennio Morricone with his incredible soundtracks. However, IMO, the best Sergio Leone's western is "Once Upon a Time in the West" which features Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, Charles Bronson and Claudia Cardinale: a real masterpiece that inspired director Tarantino for his movies later.
