I'm glad to see you've discovered this movie. It's more of a dark, psychological thriller western. Was Clint's character an avenging angel or the spirit of Marshall Duncan who can now rest in peace? Brilliantly directed with very nice cinematography. I would highly recommend Clint Eastwood's 1971 film Play Misty For Me. It's a true psychological thriller with a female slasher vibe. Thanks for a great reaction and I will subscribe and be watching more.👍

They did not make a "deal with the devil". They made a deal with ... Duncan! For a second time. The stranger was Duncan's ghost. The townspeople hired Bridges and the other two to kill Duncan because he had discovered the gold being mined in the area was on government land and would mean the end of the mine and the town. They then framed the gang for stealing gold, hence their imprisonment and desire for revenge. Duncan was buried in an unmarked grave, so his spirit could not rest. Once the proper headstone was carved, Duncan faded away.

LAGO is Spanish for Lake. This movie was shot mostly on the shores of Mono Lake in California. The "town" was, of course, built for the movie, per Clint's wishes. Best lines: "What about after, what about after we do it?" "What" "What do we do then?" "Then you live with it." The Man With No Name was the ghost of Marshall Jim Duncan, out for revenge.

The proper term is not "demon" or "devil," it's "revenant": a person returned from the dead. This was a particularly vengeful revenant, and until, "Unforgiven," this was my favorite Clint Eastwood Western. It was, unsurprisingly, also an inspiration for the graphic novel and film, "The Crow."

Ahh that’s the word thank you!! I didn’t know the proper word for what I was trying to say! Thank you!
@matthewkirkhart24014 ай бұрын
Yes, there are several different hypotheses out there but I agree, his character in this film is a revenant. There are several hints you can see in hindsight that he is undead after you know this (you would see them on a rewatching). Also, they weave in some classic fantasy elements in this as well around knowing a creature’s “true name” and if you do they lose their power to you. One of the many reasons, there are more than just this one though, that the last scene where he says something like “yes you do” instead of actually saying his name when asked is so important to the story. Such a great film. I swear he did this soon after some of the other more classic traditional westerns he is known for just to shake things up a bit. Lol

Clint Eastwood's character is Duncan's ghost, returning for revenge. Think of "THE CROW" (1994) in a Western setting. His film "PALE RIDER" (1985) also has a similar feel to it. Of the many Westerns you have yet to experience, try to find your way to "OPEN RANGE" (2003). Incredible cast and story, you will love it. And when you're ready for a fun, light-hearted comedy with Clint Eastwood, treat yourself to "EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE" (1978). You'll recognize several of the actors you just watched, with Geoffrey Lewis (Barnes) playing Clint's best friend this time. It's a film you don't want to miss. * There's a few different western movie genres. There's "Westerns"(like John Wayne, and Gunsmoke), there's "The Old West"(which is, more historical), there's "The Wild Wild West"(which is usually comedic, like Shanghai Noon for instance), there's "Steampunk"(like, "The Prestige" film), and finally, there's "The Weird West"(which could involve vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, or magic). This one kind of fell under the category of "Weird West". At first, Clint Eastwood wasn't sure whether to say that the stranger was the younger brother of U.S. Marshal Jim Duncan, or say that he *WAS* Jim Duncan, back from the dead. * Then he decided to be ambiguous about it. However, if he was back from the dead, it would have to be something like that movie called "The Crow". Because a ghost cannot maintain a manifestation for anywhere near that long, cannot interact with the living to that capacity, and certainly cannot have sex, but Eric Draven in The Crow could have. Maybe it was Jim Duncan's horse that brought him back...rather than a crow. Why didn't they recognize him. I think Clint Eastwood mentioned something about how after the resurrection in the gospels, Mary Magdalene didn't recognize Jesus right away. She thought he was the gardener(so I guess the gardener must've looked a little bit like Jesus), and I think that's where Eastwood was coming from with that. * Why did he rape Callie? Keep in mind, this is a movie that's kind of like The Crow. He came back to punish these people, like Eric Draven punished the people he came back to get revenge on. The rape was Callie's punishment. I know that sounds kind of twisted, but that's why he did it. Some people consider this the final chapter of "The Man with No Name" film series. The entire series consisting of(and his aliases): "Rawhide"(Rowdy Yates), "Ambush at Cimarron Pass"(Keith Williams), "A Fistful of Dollars"(Joe Manco), "For A Few Dollars More"(Joe Manco), "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"(Joe Manco), "Hang 'Em High"(not possible to work into the series because the year takes place in 1889) and "Two Mules for Sister Sara"(Hogan). * After that, would've been: "Joe Kidd"(not possible to work into the series because it takes place in the early 1900's), "The Outlaw Josey Wales"(Josey Wales), "Pale Rider"(Preacher), "Unforgiven"(William Munny) and finally "High Plains Drifter"(Jim Duncan). So some people consider "The Man with No Name" series to be an "ennealogy". What's his "real" name. Ya know...who knows? It would have to be either "Josey Wales", "William Munny", or "Jim Duncan". I'm just not sure. Most people subscribe to the name "William Munny", but perhaps his real name *IS* "Josey Wales", and that's what got his family killed. * One hell of a missed opportunity back in 1999, was that they could've asked "Hugh Jackman" to play the role of "The Man with No Name" in a Man with No Name origin story called *The* *Man* *with* *No* *Name,* since Hugh Jackman already looks like Clint Eastwood to begin with. Then after applying the make-up, getting his hair just right(including the sideburns) and costume, he would've looked almost indistinguishable from a young Clint Eastwood, but he was locked into the X-Men films at the time. So he would've been quite unavailable, but he could've also have played the role of a young "Dirty Harry" if they would've decided to do more Dirty Harry movies.

That one has a lot of weird symbolism too: Showing up in town out of no where from the darkness like a ghost. Unbeatable fighter Hard and quiet attitude, but improving peoples life (except the ones who he fought) Disappearing into the darkness like a ghost, "Where ya going Chaney?"- Speed "North" - Chaney "(wtf?)" - Speed There was a lot of weird writing back in the day.

on " inside the actor's studio" clint explained that his character in this film is the marshall's brother, NOT his ghost. its in the script, and the writer, director, actor's and all involved with the project saw it that way. clint was surprised that the audience saw it in a supernatural way, and it gave him the idea to make pale rider. why would clint lie? one might ask to the majority of commenters who insist on retelling a falsehood when they plainly dont know. would clint eastwood know who this character was? yes, surely. would he lie about it for 50 years? no, why would he? THEREFORE he was the marshall's BROTHER. this interview IS on youtube. i saw it that way too from the age of 6, until i saw the interview in my early 30s. i dont need replies which attempt to refute clint. i know, i saw it that way too. when my dad took me to see this, i fell in love with westerns, single-action revolvers, and eastwood all in one night. i was only 6 in 73, my father and i certainly thought it was the marshall's ghost. dad was more of a "dirty harry" fan.

okay - then why would the drifter answer 'yes you do..' when Mordecai says to him ' I don't even know your name...' - that line doesn't make sense if he was his brother

@@blueboy4244 DUNCAN. is the name he must mean. right? i mean, we werent there to ask these questions at the actor's studio. but the answers surely do exist.

Most of Clint's westerns have a dark side to them. One exception is the comedy musical "Paint Your Wagon" (1969) co-starring Lee Marvin. Yes, they sing. Sort of. Others have recommended "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976), "Unforgiven" (1992), and "Pale Rider" (1985). All are good. "The Beguiled" (1971) is an interesting watch, and its 2017 remake has slightly better ratings. I see you've watched "The Magnificent Seven" (1960). That was a remake of a Japanese movie "The Seven Samurai" (1954), as was the sci-fi "Battle Beyond the Stars" (1980). The latter was Jim Cameron's first full-length feature film, where he worked in the art department.

I would recommend Treasure of the Sierra Madre. It’s one of the GOATs.

mordecai, and the barber, both appear in the "journey to babel" star trek episode. few seem to recognize that one of the brothers from this film plays the bar owner in "unforgiven".

It was always my understanding that he was Duncan’s ghost. Also my vote is for “The Outlaw Josey Wales”

Watch "Pale Rider" next. Another great Eastwood western with a similar theme to this one.

This is the one Clint Eastwood film I haven't watched. He wanted red paint. I do know that red paint was very, very flammable back in the day. I wonder if he wants it to go up in flames.

Westerns are very varied. A dark one would be Outlaws and Angels, starring Eastwood...Francesca Eastwood that is. Clint's daughter. And of course there is Bone Tomahawk with Kurt Russell. But than one has to be seen totally cold.

In terms of the usual themes of the Western, this story is about the outsourcing of self-defense and whom you choose to outsource it to if you can't do it yourself. It also features "the wages of sin" and an avenging angel or perhaps an instrument of God or natural (supernatural) justice. The Stranger is like a returning spirit of the dead sheriff, sent back to visit revenge upon those that had a hand in his end. Eastwood's Pale Rider later combines some of this re-incarnated avenger with the story of Shane. Both Shane and Pale Rider are also "required viewing" for Western fans.
