If you're interested in reading concise stories not tied to continuity, check out Supergirl by Tom King, there's a reason James Gunn mentions that book, the art is gorgeous and the story is great. His Mister Miracle is also very good, and it's quite deep. If you like the Thomas Wayne Batman vibe then Punisher Max by Garth Ennis (or any Punisher stories written by him really) is for you, it's out of continuity and it's gritty as hell.

I liked Flashpoint, it was a fun story. But the reason I totally ditched comics and took up manga is because I never cared about the characters, they never felt real to me, not once in the 15 years reading comics did I get emotionally attached to a character. Whereas I read manga and it’s like these characters are real people, I read Pluto and I care so much for these robots as they’re starting to feel real human emotions, I really feel emotional when they die, whereas I feel nothing when a comic characters dies, because they’ll be back next year.

I’d highly recommend the Invincible comics, they’re great and it will take the show an extremely long time to get through the series (I believe the estimate is 7+ seasons)

There are several comics regarding Thomas Wayne Batman and some even have influencein today's comic books, I think they are called flashpointverse or something like that. If you're interested into recent comics you should really read Doomsday Clock.

I’m down for comic content going off your Manga tastes I’ll recommend Preacher,Hellboy and invincible there independent so you don’t have to worry about crossover event stuff that Marvel & DC constantly hammer on there titles. I personally am a new 52 apologist I love it mostly for being a good jump on for DC, court of owls is actually my personal favourite Batman Story.
