Love that Liverpool accent. Paul Reynolds is one of the most underrated guitarists and in my opinion (probably many, many others also) never got the props he deserved. His playing is original, creative, distinctive and is the sound of F.O.S., more than the synths. When you hear that guitar sound/tone, you immediately know who it is.

As a guitar player, I never thought much of his guitar playing back in the day. Being 15 it was all Van Halen etc., but you grow up and mature and today I see the brilliance of his playing. I can now see the influence he had moving forward as a lot of bands adopted more of this guitar sound to their music

Amen, and the thing is, he was 14 or 15 at the time when he joined that band. I’m a guitar player also and the Van Halen coolaid was definitely going around. The other guy overlooked was Andy Taylor of Duran Duran. I was really shallow and narrow minded also my friend. And I bet You Eddie listen to Flock of Seagulls also. Hell, he played keyboards. The intro of 1984 and I’ll Wait.

@@shawnstarks1743 - no - Paul was *NOT* 14 or 15. He was 17. Still young to join a signed, touring, charting pop band back in the day and age when the rock lifestyle was all too seductive.
@roamlikekane

Here's the irony, he was just a little over 15 when he joined. That's was so amazing, he was able to invent his own sound at such a young age.
@AJ17_
@AJ17_ Жыл бұрын
@@roamlikekane Paul was 17 when he joined the band in early 1980 (he turned 18 that summer... he was born August 4, 1962). He looked so much younger, so his age was mis-reported a lot. Paul has said he started playing guitar when he was around 10 years old though, so to have that kind of talent and technique in less than 10 years of playing is pretty astounding.

It seems in that era, people felt they could be more brave, bold, fresh & creative with their looks & style. The original members of AFOS have reunited once again. For further details, please visit _'AFLOCKOFSEAGULLS'_ (dotorg) and please help spread the word. If there is enough interest garnered, there *_MIGHT_* be a tour with the original members in the future...

@RiverOfBlacklights
@RiverOfBlacklights 4 жыл бұрын
@@triplesstarz6822 No they aren't touring and no one from the original lineup is "back in the band". Yes, all 4 collaborated on _'Ascension'_ but that was it. After that, Mike just blew the album off and kept touring with his band of hired scabs. Not even a short tour with the original lineup to promote the album. Bet the majority of Seagulls fans 'round the world don't even know they collaborated together to make this new album, much less do they know this new album of re-worked hits even exists. Shame cause if Mike had promoted it *_properly_* (not just talking vaguely about it on some morning television show for 30 seconds), it might have propelled the Seagulls back up on the charts and an original lineup tour *_MIGHT_* have happened. Not to mention, the massive amount of money a tour with the original lineup could have served to maybe get a new album of original material with all 4voriginal members.... but no. Nothing. Just another missed opportunity and a massive lack of foresight by Mike who even before _'Ascension'_ was even released, was already crushing the thought of an original lineup tour on interviews...

You guys did a great thing, you created something that lasts. Like an artist who creates original paintings, a builder who makes homes or buildings. Those who create should and often do feel a sense of life completion long before life is over. Creating and finishing creates a sense of having really lived for a good reason. You can walk thru life and realize that you are happy long before your life ends - because you did something worth while other than just eating , fucking and travelling to places. You created something, it's quite fullfilling.

At the end of the interview, Mike was talking about Paul how he spends so much money on vacations and he needs to focus blah blah blah. he didn't mention Paul's name but when Mike said that, Paul suddenly looked at him then be looked down like he was embarrassed. Then when Mike kept blabbering about it, then Frank coughed like trying to tell Mike to shut up. Watch it again at the end. Mike is so irritating. They asked Paul what's the meaning of the more you live the more you love, Paul said, Mike writes the lyrics, If i get it wrong, i don't want him to get mad in that type of thing. Mike is so pathetic and self-centered and arrogant. just saying.

Poor Paul his whole face got really 'puffy' due to the amount of booze he was getting down his neck to cope with Mike's ruthless work schedule. Gig after gig all over the states and around the world without hardly a day off. It was like he was frightened FOS would dissappear if they didn't carry on with the punishing workload, that combined with too much partying and substance abuse Sadly something had to give and Paul being so young had a nervous breakdown. Glad to see he's ok now ' Bands reunited FOS' on KZbin is well worth a watch. After only a few hours rehearsal they were as tight as ever. 😊

I saw bands reunited and I have to agree with Paul, FOS🎉 could have been the biggest band in the world. Like another Liverpool band well known, their youngest was stressed from heavy touring! John Lennon was considerate to have the band 'go home' to England, just focus on creating more great songs.Mike Score and the other members did not seem to have the foresight and confidence/sophistication to understand success is due to each member of the band. Make no mistake Paul had the star power/talent that made FOS. Yes Mike wrote the songs but did he realize how important esp. Paul was? Mike was afraid it would all go away if no touring, then he created that reality and ruined what might have been. Mike out there trying to profit still of a band no more or use FOS name is not right and fair to the other members. very much alive.

Paul's very distinctive guitar work made AFOS stand out in the early 80's. When Mike booted him out (or did Paul just quit ? Maybe both ? lol) of the band , AFOS just wasn't the same. Loved their first 3 albums but the 4th one in '86.....sorry but it sucked balls. No coincidence Paul wasn't in it.

There's conflicting stories. Paul has said he quit. Mike said he kicked Paul out. And Frank has said it was both. To me, it sounds like Mike was thinking about kicking Paul out because his drinking (and alleged drug use) was starting to affect his role in the band, but Paul had finally had enough (he was was physically and mentally exhausted from the constant touring), and left before he was asked to. Paul said on Bands Reunited that leaving the Seagulls was probably one of the best things that ever happened to him, because if he had carried on like that, he probably wouldn't be here now (he knew he was slowly killing himself with the heavy drinking and the like).
@janebraun4482
@janebraun4482 2 жыл бұрын
@@AJ17_ Sounds like it was both, that Mike would have booted him out or was doing so anyway by over touring. Mike made this band rather homeless; they came to the USA and just never 'went home', never stopped. Still isn't it true that about 89 Mike to get them back together and the guys including Paul would not reform? Plus unclear if Paul conquered his issues so as not to stop his talents..

@@janebraun4482 I don't know for sure if Mike actually asked the other guys back in 88-89 to rejoin, but if he did, I don't blame them at all for refusing to after the hell he put them all through the first time around. But Paul did say on Bands Reunited that he still struggled with his addiction issues (it's something addicts fight/struggle with the rest of their lives really... they're forever "in recovery").

He pretty much had a nervous breakdown in 1984 (and he was only like 22 at the time... so young). He got burned out from the constant touring, partying & the like. Thankfully he's doing better now, though he did suffer a stroke in early 2020. Poor guy. I feel for him so much.

@@areyalive18 You have to read between the lines, although they or Paul says too much 'touring 'taking a toll', I think there was an undercurrent, where Mike realized Paul was gaining popularity, the girls like 'him', and where Paul speaks of Mike turning up his equipment over.... Paul's guitar?? you realize yeah, Mike's ego was the real 'toll' or a good part of it. Otherwise never did they get back together...?

@@janebraun4482There were a lot of factors at play. Mike’s ego and his bullying was one. He put his bandmates through mental hell. Frank said he had to see a psychiatrist after the band broke up & that Mike had to go to counseling for anger management. Mike’s control freak ways plus the pressure of fame & constantly touring caused Paul to turn to heavy drinking to try to cope with it all. It’s sad because Mike will throw everyone else under the bus (especially Paul), but takes no responsibility himself for what happened. But you talk to the other three, they all say the same thing, that Mike was the main “villain”. And I’ll believe Ali, Frank & Paul over Mike any day.

I wonder if that was one reason why he never talked a lot in interviews back then? I know he was the "shy, quiet one", but maybe he was self-conscious about his deep voice? Who knows? Funny thing is, listening to the music now, I can easily pick up that deep voice of his in the backing vocals.

Like most rock bands they all have their issues. With the Flock, Frank was the manic one, upbeat ready to rock the world, Paul was the depressant anxiety one who was terrified to come on stage and he was only 15 I think when he started poor kid, then theirs Mike and Ali, two brothers who couldn't get along and if it wasn't for that, they still be playing right now since Frank wanted to reunite when they did the VH-1 reunion special but Mike said no...so, so sad. And just one last thing, dose Ali remind anyone else of that actor Peter Stormare? He was the bad guy in most movies like Fargo, Constantine, the Eye Doctor in Minority Report? To me he dose. Lol

And I've heard conflicting stories about how Paul came into the band. One was he saw an ad the other guys placed in the local paper looking for a guitarist. The other, Frank said he spotted Paul waiting at a bus stop, thought he looked like a musician, went over to talk to him and ended up inviting him to come audition.
