My first exposure to A Flock of Seagulls goes like this. I was active military in 1983. We had a four man crew heading to an isolated job site. We were in a small town in Nebraska and driving through endless fields of corn. All four of us were in a great mood, talking and laughing, very rowdy and loud. Then this song comes on the radio and stunned us into silence... all four of us. We were hypnotized by this amazing song, not just hearing it, but feeling it. It was an airy, futuristic song, but it definitely had heart and soul, and a very effective guitar. We didn't want this song to ever end, but of course it had to. When it ended, the disc jockey informed us that it was a new English band called "A Flock of Seagulls" and the song was titled "I Ran." I don't think any of us spoke for the next ten minutes, we were just basking in a melancholy, but yet, very happy and satisfied mood. When we finally completed our job, we drove to the music shop located in that small Nebraska town and all four of us bought A Flock of Seagulls on cassette ... the last remaining 4 copies that the store had. Flash forward 40 years, and I'm still loving this band. I have their entire catalog, including Mike's solo record. This music is truly timeless, and remains highly effective regardless of how often or how many times you listen to it. I feel that Mike Score is a genius. This man actually wrote, played and captured a sound that he was feeling, and those of us that are lucky enough feel it too. I send Mike Score and the band 40 years worth of gratitude.

Respectfully, it didn't take 40 years for us to figure that out, but after 40 years it is now indisputable how amazing this song always was. One of the more incredible uses of the song was in the Cartoon Network show "Symbionic Titan". The animated show was inspired by Genndy Tartovsky's love of the old anime and Sentai tropes of combining robots, aliens exiled to earth and having to defend the planet in order to protect themselves. While in anime fandom there's been a long tradition of fan-made anime music videos (I have some on VHS that are 35 years old), Gt took it up a notch, and in one episode of the series, the girl that's fallen hard for the heroes robot member (in his human disguise) is practically entranced, dancing with SALS in her heart (and full volume in the show), totally oblivious to the battle down at the seashore between the heroes in their 100 foot robot form and an alien invader of similar size - with the battle lasting throughout the entire song.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mike Score, at his concert here at Riverbend Cincinnati Ohio. I went to get a beer and I passed a security guy and said "Hey, tell Mike Score I'd like to meet him" and he went and got him! I couldn't believe it! He was the sweetest, kindest person and I was so excited I kissed his hand! Lol! Well, I was a little drunk too! Lol! He was my first crush and he will always hold a special place in my heart. Thanks for doing this video, Professor! What an amazing band then and now! Take care, my friend ♥️

Take care and if you ever see TFOS, just walk up to the security and ask if you can meet Mike Score! You might get your wish too! All my best 🙏♥️

This song is just so epic! It floods back all the fun we had as a kid in the 80's. Just makes me want to get in a convertible and drive down the coast blasting this song! It is simple, but it was epic genius all in one...Timeless!

I love this song! You're totally right about it being ahead of it's time, the first time I heard it, probably only about 5 years ago, I had two thoughts, 'this sounds like Flock of Seagulls', and then directly after 'but it sounds so current'...

Thank you so much for profiling this song! I found this song in 1989 when I was working at a record store where I met my husband. The album this song was on was essentially the soundtrack to our relationship. This along with Telecommunication is one of my very favorites. It does give me goosebumps to hear it. ❤️

Thank you for covering this song Professor!! The song does create a lush atmosphere. It is so amazing how it all seems to fit! The hairstyles, the sounds ... the melodies....the title of the song...it is all perfection! I remember having such a huge crush on this one girl in high school when this song hit! Even to this day, the song reminds me of her. The song has a gorgeous, lush soundscape.....

I have always enjoyed "Space Age Love Song" much more than "I Ran" though "I Ran" is the more popular of the two. I compare this song with "The Sun Always Shines On TV" by A-Ha in that it is overshadowed by "Take On Me", but I prefer "The Sun..." much more as well as it is one of my favorite songs of all time.
@xxlilly_playsxxkiz99802 жыл бұрын
It is a hard choice, right? Both bands that should be recognized way more.
@Paul_Simon2 жыл бұрын
Add “Wishing (if I had a Photograph)” to the mix and I was stuck in an almost constant three way tie, and the A-Ha analogy is a great one. I’ve always paired the first single with the (or a, depending on the timing) follow up, so add Celtic Soul Brothers from Dexy’s Midnight Runners, IOU from Freeez, Gold from Spandau Ballet, Never Gonna Give You Up from Musical Youth, etc, for me).

I met Mike at a Flock of Seagulls concert a few years ago. I was wearing a wig styled like his hair back then. I had heard the story of the hair being a happy accident. The hair was awesome. We were able to take a picture with Mike. Great Guy. I hated I Ran when it first came out but quickly fell in love with it and Flock of Seagulls. Have loved them ever since. Space Age is one of my all time favorite songs. Mike is number one! Awesome song, Thanks to Mike and Flock of Seagulls.

It was way ahead of any music I had heard. I played that song sooo many times...soo many!! Soon afterward their Space Age Song came upon the music world and again Wow...Paul's Guitar part of the song was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G....as he is. I listen to it soo very often, but once it finishes. I play it again as it is out of this World Awesome! Love the 80's so many Awesome Bands!!

I'm nearly 50 now, but FOS's greatest song I felt was 'Photograph' and that amazing video!!!! I had a jukebox set list in my drunken late 20's and 30's in the pub nights out along with 'Bring out the dancing horses among others....... omd enola gay too! Great songs that just get me in a mood of the night!!!!! It's great to hear how the band started and that hair style! FOREVER ICON song for me Photograph (Wishing). It's the beginning of it and the immenseness of the rifs and keys..... the universe and the woman dancing in his mind! Back then we had no phones or internet, so all you had was the wish you took a picture of that dream girl you met the night before, but the night is over and you never to see her again! I know we are here to talk about Space Age Lovesong, its good like, but it passed me by too. I guess it's because I was never 'into' or a fan, it was just THAT song Photograph! If I was on a desert island and I could only pick 3 1980's songs on vinyl it would be Enola Gay (1980), Wishing (1982), Bring on the Dancing Horses (1985).
