This Show and the Anne Movies all have one terrible thing in common! Almost all of the characters become a part of you and once it is over, you miss them so much as if they were relatives. Those who you have grown to love but live very far away, and you wont get to see again for a very long time! How lucky I was that my Mother who had read the Anne Books and shared them with me as well as the Anne and Avonlea Series! It is top of the line, clean and first class family entertainment! GOD BLESS KEVIN SULLIVAN!!!

I remember the night of the last episode of "Road to Avonlea". I felt a sadness that a part of my childhood was permanently ending. I grew up with this show, was enchanted by the town and the people of Avonlea, used to fantasize about traveling to PEI (and I hope to get there someday!). This was a show that you will *never* see again...the attention to period detail, the character development and the warmth of the storylines. You really felt as if you got to know these people even though they were fictitious characters. Kevin Sullivan is a genius.

Agreed this and Anne were wonderful mainly since a lot of the cast carried over either into the same or different roles, plus the new actors melded perfectly into that world and gave us a marvelous gift

Ugh, I resonate with all of this. I was only a year younger than Sara, so it really was like growing up with all of them. It's probably also the last truly happy memory I had with my parents, since things began falling apart with them at the same this show was drawing to a close. So there I was, childhood ending in all sorts of ways, and I think that's why this show in particular has such a powerful hold on me.

@@pansyflower9697 My bedtime was at 8 o'clock, but on Mondays (thankfully, my mom was a huge fan of both this show and Anne), I'd brush my teeth and get ready for bed really slowly, then creep down the hallway and lay silently behind the couch trying to make sure my parents forgot I was there. It was probably written for her. Kevin said once that once Gema and Zack were cast, their parts were pretty much written for them. That happens with talented actors who are perfect for the part. The two people meld into one. Notice how Felicity became a totally different person as Gema grew up. Personality meld

JUJU Interesting comments. The same can also probably be said for Mike (Gus Pike) Mahonen. I had read that he was originally only supposed to appear in one-two episodes but he so impressed the producers that they decided to make him a regular member of the cast. Jackie, on the other hand, had a bit part in Anne of Avonlea so you may be right about creating Hettie for her.

Road to Avonela was shown in Sweden in the afternoon, monday to friday, when I was in the 9th grade, I think. I usually came home just in time to watch it. I've loved it ever since. :) One thing, though, that nearly drove me insane was that they stopped broadcasting it after season 6 (Season 7 hadn't been made yet, I think), so the last episode I saw then was "Homecoming", when Gus is reported to be lost at sea. There was no internet in those days (at least not where I lived), so I didn't know there were more episodes. I thought the series ended that way. :p 1-2 years later I read in a TV-magazine that they were going to rerun the whole series and add the missing season 7, so guess who was very happy then? :)

This used to be shown every Monday evenings on the Disney Channel. I always made sure I was home to watch it or videotape it if I was working that evening. It may not have been a commercial success compared to other series like "Friends", "Sienfeld" or "Fraser" but IMO it remains one of the best TV series of all time. I recently started watching it again and the memories it brings back are beyond explanation. Like other fans, I wish it had continued but the characters were getting older and the actors wanted to pursue other projects. It was time to move on.

George Hobson I, too, had every episode on video tape until I got a dvd player and I couldn't watch the tape anymore. I agree that, like other TV stations, the Disney Channel's quality has not been the same since. Most of their series now reminds me of the mindless TV shows they used to feature in the 70s. It's just not the same anymore.

veryberry39 My oldest daughter is about your age. Fortunately for her, this show was on at 7pm where we live so she was able to watch it before going to bed. It was sort of like family night for all of us because it was something we could all watch together. Sadly, many of the series shown on the Disney Channel now are not nearly as great as this was. Which means that my kids can't watch a quality TV show with their own children the way I did with them. It's a shame.

In the early 1900s when Avonlea was set, received pronounciation a.k.a. "Queen's English" was reinforced in the schools even in the colonial territories where they didn't speak with a full British accent. But, being Hetty was a teacher, she acted a little snooty, and haughty, and would try to imitate the accent of the British aristocracy. She was always someone trying to escape her lower class. A lot of British society, and comedy is about that, even in commonwealth Canada.

This series will always give me the warm fuzzies and a longing for this fictional place in time. I think it was and is popular to this day is because it’s based on timeless sentiments

Hetty, Gus and felicity. They are why i watched. Gus and felicity the ultimate love story along with a nne and Gil. Forever in love with Michael mahonen aka Gus pike. Just got the whole DVD collection for Christmas. Would have loved to have lived there. Sullivan entertainment does such great shows. Have watched all 7 seasons twice in last 6 months. Can't get enough of it. State side fan forever .

Jackie was an unbelievably talented actress. I always remember her from The Dead Zone with Christopher Walken. I think another actress from the franchise was in that, too.

This was aired in the seventies on a Sunday early evening in the UK, As a child I hated school and dreaded Monday mornings. I used to take a lot of comfort from escaping into this show on Sundays, desperately trying to forget the Monday ahead. A strange choice of escapism for a 12 year old boy you may think (I never told my friends that I watched it) but it had a powerful effect on me for some reason.

@mamamanda4 1 second ago I just finished watching the entire series with my 10 yr old daughter. It’s bittersweet to come to the end. We are grateful to Kevin Sullivan and his team for making shows and movies appropriate for children and yet completely enjoyable for adults with beauty and hope and stories that draw us in and stay with us forever. We would love to see a reunion movie! It would be so satisfying to see Gus and Felicity in the stage of life where we first met Alec and Janet and to catch up on the lives of many of the characters, but I suppose after 27 years, it’s probably too late to hope for more.

He did regain some. It was mentioned in the Christmas movie, though he wasn't in it due ti issues getting the actor to agree to do it. I think it was a money issue.

It has been released under two different titles, the most common being 'Happy Christmas, Miss King,' and the other being 'An Avonlea Christmas.' Not sure why.

Why wasn't this included on the season 7 DVD set ? I just watched it today and the special feature included was made up of old interview clips included on past season DVD's. Disappointing.

Can someone explain this show? What was different about it than Anne of Green Gables? It looks good though so I might checking it out soon!!

It takes places several years after Anne leaves. The show focuses on the King Family with the arrival of Sara Stanley, whose mother grew up in Avonlea and whose wealthy father is in trouble with the law due to betrayal by former business associates. She goes to live with her Aunt Hetty who is the local school teacher. You will see many familiar faces such as Marilla, Rachel Lynde and Miss Stacey and meet many new people. Some of the actors from Anne of Green Gables come back to the show as new characters. It is a good clean family show. I loved this show growing up.
