i have one small correction, related to the restaurants in skadarska street, or "skadarlija". these are not restaurants, but "kafane". the kafana is a derivative of the ottoman occupation and a place where the ottomans, as muslims (no alcohol), drank coffee, tea, sherbet (a sweet drink made from processed sugar) and juices. kahva (tur.) = kafa (ser.) = coffee (eng.). we, serbs, firstly introduced alcohol into that equation, then food and (mostly) live music. restaurants here are quiet places to dine. btw i have enjoyed the video and the fact that you had a good time here. come again soon! best regards!

Skadarlija is a vintage street, an urban neighborhood and former municipality of Belgrade, Serbia, located in the Belgrade municipality of Stari Grad (Old Town). Skadarlija partially preserves the ambience of traditional urban architecture, including archaic urban organization, and is known as the main bohemian quarter of Belgrade, similar to Montmartre in Paris. Since 1967, Skadarlija has been protected by law as a spatial cultural-historical unit. When an aqueduct was constructed which conducted the stream underground, which still flows below the street, the largest arch of the aqueduct was named Skadar, after the city (today in Albania) which used to be former serbian capital and important historical city for Serbs, so in 1872 the street was named Skadarska ulica. Skadarska is one among streets in Belgrade which never changed their names since the first naming of the city streets. Kafanas (in the beggining they served only coffe, something like coffee shops / coffehouse) are inns, and distinct type of local bistro (or tavern) which primarily serves alcoholic beverages and coffee, and often also light snacks and traditional food. Many kafanas feature live music performances. The end section of Skadarlija is known as the Skadarlija atrium. It is mostly occupied by the brewery that belonged to one of the most distinguished Belgrade families before World War II, the Czech-originating Bajloni family (they were of mixed Italian-Czech-Serbian origin). The brewery was originally established in 1850 by Filip Đorđević. He previously purchased the equipment from the failed brewery of Czech migrant and miller expert Johan Weinhappl founded in 1839. The manually operated brewery became known as Little Brewery, to distinguish it from the Big Brewery, opened by the royal family in Savamala in 1840. It was purchased by the Bajloni family in 1880, who introduced the steam machines.

I love this information! Thanks you two. We had no idea how much these places transitioned from the Ottoman Empire to today, so appreciate the correction ❤! It is much more interesting when there is a whole back story to it. And we loved Belgrade and Serbia! Has to be one of my favorite places in the world now for its people and culture ❤

As this is a food guide, could you provide a list of places where we can try good popara, uštipci, and other traditional dishes? ❣️

Sure! There are some in the description and when I have a moment, I’ll try to find some more places. “ Here are the restaurants and dishes we ate at each: Prekoputa Proleća (popara, uštipci), Velika Skardalija Restaurant (karađorđeva šnicla), Kolubaru u Šoru (other fantastic Skardalija-style dining), Cevonik Vruć Burek (burek) and Leskovac U Malom 3 (pljeskavica), random restaurant in village where we cannot remember the name 🤣 (šnenokle, krempita)”
