The employee knows this, but they don't know if you're ignorant or not. Wal-mart will try to sell you a warranty on ESO - when you aren't buying the disc, you're buying the key. Its interesting how much ignorance can cost you, especially when you have good intentions.

***** Way back when. They tried to get me to pre-order three different games on the Gamecube despite me mentioning on the first offer, that I did not own the console. This is in the same 5-10 minute span of a single trip. This was around the time each console got its own Soul Calibur (I think it was SC 2? GC had Link and I think Xbox had Spawn). But yeah. Its not all bad memories though. One of my local Gamestops was originally a store called FuncoLand. One day I was looking through the used section and realized they had a used accessories. Controllers and what not. I noticed a CD holder. Lo and behold. It had a FuncoLand insignia on it. This is a good 15+ years after it was bought out. And it was a dollar. So I bought it, took it home and inside it was several PSone dics. Multiple demo discs from Pizza Hut and a few from Playstation Underground demo discs.

Lmao you must have tried to trade in either a sport game from 2002 or a ps2 game or something. I have the first resistance fall of man for PS3 and I checked out the trade in value just out of curiosity, 25 cents lol and I understand it's a very old game and no one is buying it. I decided to just keep it obviously. Point is that it doesn't matter the condition, there not going to give you 5 bucks for a game that there selling for 3 regardless if it works or not.

I went to buy Super Mario 3D Land at Gamestop a while back. I intended to get it used (because my game budget is fairly low), but I saw that for $3 more, I could get it new. So I figured "Alright, I support Nintendo, it's only an extra $3, I'll get it." I go to the counter, the cashier goes back to get the game, he comes back and says "I found a used a copy so I got you that one." I tell him I didn't want a used copy. The guy looks at me like I'm a freaking idiot and can't understand why I would ever want a new copy if there is a used one available. I literally had to have a heated argument with this guy, just so he would sell me a new game.

NES8594 If you bought the new copy then the store would only get a small percentage of the money for that transaction, but if you'd bought the used copy then the store would have gotten all of the money. Of course they wanted you to buy the used copy.

Adam Hart-Dyke I'm fully aware of that. But I specifically took a new copy off the shelf. My problem is that he didn't even ask if I wanted a used one instead, he just did it. Imagine if you went to buy a car. They have two of the same car; one new and one used. You decide for whatever reason, perhaps because it's less likely to have problems, you want the new one. But when you sit down with the salesmen he hand you the keys to the used car even though you just told him you were buying the new one. Would you be happy?

If they did that to me I'd tell them to give me the copy I wanted or watch me walk out and go somewhere else. There have been times when I've pulled out my phone and bought things online right in front of the cashier because they tried to give me something other than what I wanted.

I know they want to sell as many used games as possible, but that doesn't give him the right to just replace my purchase with something else without consulting me first (kind of like what they did with preorder cash in this video).

When I was around 10 I had an original Wii. I saved my money for months to be able to trade in my Wii for a PS3. I go to the store, have everything including the original box, and ask to trade it in. They denied me because I was missing the little door on top where you can plug in GameCube controllers. Fair enough. They say "well, if you want, we can still take the wires and controllers for store credit". 10 year old me thinking thats a great idea takes it, and my Grandma was nice enough to cover the rest. So, I go home with my PS3, excited to hook it up, and what do I find while setting it up? The door for the Wii, my Grandma then drives me BACK to GameStop and I tell them I found the door and would like to trade in just the Console. Their answer? "No". I ask why. "Because you don't have any of the cables or controllers. Keep in mind this is the SAME cashier that took my cables as credit. I tell them, I was just here earlier (probably an hour) with the cables. She says "Sorry, nothing I can do about it" in a really rude way, with a smirk on her face. That really just amazed me, that they would do that to anyone, a 10 year old for that matter. Still have that Wii (with no cables) to this day.

TehReelSlemShedy I thought about trading my gamecube in years ago and had all the parts to and they told me how much, but then I told them the small catch. My dad got it from work as they gave him a deal and they engraved it with the company name, which was a beer company. They said they wouldn't take it because it had an alcohol logo on it which is a pretty weak excuse since they console with stuff from M rated games on them. I am glad they didn't take it because if I do ever want to sell it again I might be able to get more on ebay since I am guessing not many gamecubes out there have beer names on them lol.

nicodimus2222 I find this video almost completely irrelevant. GameStop's main focus has changed. One of the highest priority is customer solutions. Doing whatever we can in order to accommodate the customer and make sure you leave happy and come back. But I do understand that there are instances where a store is struggling and is pushing preorders, sales, and other stuff you don't need. My store is doing well so we have the freedom to be as free with the customers as possible. I love my job because I'm able to talk to the customers that with a few of them, I actually play online now. Yea, there's some stuff that is annoying at the job but it's retail. Some things never change in retail. This guys stories are from when!? Several years ago during the Gamecube days?

J Lopez That makes sense because back in the 1990s the gaming market crashed already and is barely recovering from it, so it makes sense that gamestop back then was pushing for pre-orders and shit, but now that the market is some what stable and growing, Gamestop has gone back to customer solutions.

Its funny how he's talking about people being sheep. When I worked a RadioShack I once told a person who was buying a digital converter that they should get the warranty because the Flux Capacitors had a knack for going out. Now this was obviously a joke but the person was like "Oh really? thanks for letting me know I'll get the warranty" I was dumbstruck. Not only after telling this person that something was almost sure to break on their purchase, this something didn't even actually exist. Instead of saying who I'm not buying that then. They straight up just listened to what I told them to do. Now obviously I told the person I was just joking and jokingly questioned their familiarity with classic movies. AND THEY STILL GOT THE WARRANTY. It just reminds me so much of America's government relationship with its civilians. The government makes shit up, and society just believes them and does what they're told. People are literally trained not to think for themselves.

As a former manager of a GameStop store, everyone in here would absolutely love shopping at my store. I followed a no pressure policy. Sure our reservation and discount card numbers were not great, but if a customer told us they didn't want it, we let it be. Listening to horror stories about the stores now that I have been away for several years, I'm glad I didn't stick around.

Worked at a gamestop about a decade ago those stories I still have and tell my friends to this day. My store location was robbed 14 times over the course of 3 months, and in one robbery the robbers came back again to grab whatever they missed. Never have a gamestop/retail near a major entrance to a freeway.

Update 2: I have talked with a new partner (I used to work under him decades ago on my first job) who unfortunately doesn't seem that interested which is bad news for me because he knows a thing or two about programming and the internet. He seemed to like my ideas (4 possible projects) at first but now seems distanced. He probably has a lot on his plate at the moment. If it doesn't pan out with him I will talk with one of my brothers who is out of a job atm just like the majority of people in my country. He seems to like selling stuff and I trust him completely which is a plus.

In ireland gamestop employees are fairly nice. No pushing on pre orders. The only thing they mention when you buy a game is game protection. The money they give you for games is shit, but the employees are nice

Wasn't MadCatz basically bootleg playstation gear? I remember buying a controller and it literally came apart in 3 days. MadCatz is third party anything, really. I have a few MadCatz things myself, but don't really use them. One is a Gamecube controller that's really small and weird, but my sister still likes it. I just keep it for her. The other thing is a Y-shaped link cable for the GBA with another controller port to connect a GBA to the Gamecube. It's pretty neat and helpful when I need it to link up two GBAs or connect a GBA to the Gamecube. I don't think I've ever been in a Gamestop store and I don't think I ever intend to. I just stick with my retro and Microplay.

I got 2 MadCatz controllers for the 64, they came apart in like a week 1 of them was green and it didn't even fucking work and the other one was blue and the little analog stick circle came off so it exposed the sharp part so it was literally unusable unless I planned to cut my whole hand off. Great system, and cheap as hell with the way Sony supports it.

Those are all Indie titles at best and completely miss the scope of what the Vita was supposed to be. Not to mention not one of those meets the flag ship game category for ANY console or handheld. Perhaps Persona could be considered flag ship but certainly not in the North America region. It hasn't amounted to anything compared to the PSP.

I actually have a story for when i was a customer in a EBgames in Australia. This happened around 2013 i want to say. I like the big heavy sets of headphones / headsets. the cheap 20$ ones you get don't work for me, they break or w.e and just are terrible wastes of money for me. So i see EBgames has a 400$ pair of "Turtlebeach" headsets, and it has everything i could ever want. I bought it and spent months loving the thing, the audio was perfect & crystal clear, my mic was so good people could hear trains that were Miles away from me. So i really enjoyed the headset.. Until the flaws started appearing. Now, with a 400$ pair of PC equipment..I kinda expected them to last a LONG time. Because me being stupid i think "Hey i spent a lot of money, So of course they'll be fantastic." As the weeks & a few months went by, parts of the headset slowly started coming off, the glue wasn't holding or what ever until the headset was just a hot mess of plastic. So i take it back thinking it was a one time thing, The next headset is fine..A month or so passes, same thing, same exact problem. I start to get pissed so i try to get my money back, they say they can't do it and they can only exchange it for another one or give me store credit. I ask if i can get another headset, they say "Sure" and when they bring it over they basically say "Right so you have this headset here, and if you want this one it'll be..an extra 50$ please" and i am just completely dumbfounded, So i just ask for the same headset i already had and leave yet again. A month later, Again same problem so i walk into the place furious telling them i want my money back and i don't want store credit, i'd much rather take the money and just use it elsewhere. The manage didn't want to as it was against store policy, I told them how its terrible they can even sell a product like that if it was so shittily made. So i leave with the bag of useless plastic and call up a part of the government essentially relating to marketing and how they're practically scamming people for useless crap. I give them all the details, what model the headset was and how many times i've sent it back with proof. The guy is happy with the information and goes to take care of it, A few hours go by and i am talking to the area manager for the entire state of queensland and he says "Right we've gotten your complaint, we're really sorry about that. If you did not want the same product again we can understand and if you take this email i am sending you now, print it and give it to the store, I will call ahead to make sure they know what to do, they'll give you your 400$ back" And i went into the store and got my money back no problem. A few weeks later, the Headset has been pulled from EBgames and wasn't even in stores. Since then i have refused to purchase Turtlebeach ever again. I am still a sucker for expensive headsets but i at least try and invest in quality now (Like my Astro's i have been getting for a few years now and they're just perfect for what i want.)

I will no longer go to gamestop. I had pre-ordered fire emblem fates about a month before it came out with about 30$ on the game. I got sick the day the game came out and couldn't get to the store. I went the day after and they had sold my reserved copy. I do realize that yeah they give you 24 hours but I gave that money to have the game be there when I was ready to pick it up. Is that not what reserving a copy is for? I got my money back went to walmart and they had it in the back without being on the shelf at all. The store manager went and found it for me and said here what one do you want. After doing this for 2 different games I said screw this. I got a 50gig SD card and now I download the games I want on my 3DS. I don't own any other consoles so I don't buy things at gamestop anymore. PC master race anyway.

Not only that but the closest game stop is about an hour away so it saves me on gas. The only games I buy from a game store or otherwise are 3DS games and I don't even have to buy those physically. As for my opinion of steam. well I'm not really a good person to ask on that as I have about 467 games on my steam. I kinda have some bias. I have a good opinion of steam. I go on I click what I want I download it and it works. And if it doesn't I don't go blaming steam I find out what is wrong why it won't work and I fucking fix it.

Cynthia Drangus Lady Yeah but you are limited to outdated hardware and buggy games that get fixed by someone else. If a game is buggy on my computer I can diagnose and fix it myself. I remember when I had skyrim on 360, years ago. I ran into a bug that made it so a door wouldn't open.And yes it was suppose to it was part of a quest I was doing at the time. I tried all kinds of different things. Restart the game, go back to an old save. Nothing worked. I went on and reported the bug. No fix was forthcoming. On PC I can turn off collision and walk right through the damn door. Kill the damn dragon priest and get my fucking mask. Admittedly this isn't fixing the problem but it's skyrim you really just kinda have to live with the bugs after a while.

Here's some actual GameStop love: One time, as assistant manager told me, if a Customer wants to buy a shitty game, that you know is SHITTY, try to convince him not to buy it. Another time, if the customer is trading in a shitty game, just tell him we don't take it anymore, because we have too many copies, or something. Finally, once or twice, that AM admitted to giving a full refund to someone. "You tried it out, and found out you didn't like it. Fine just take your money back." Nowadays, they would give you the money on a gift card, though. We were a high ranked store, always edging between #1, 2, or 3 in the country. And the store's still pretty cool. They'll still try to sell you preorders, but in our city we know that's the job, and I think they always happen to hit their numbers, so they don't try to push it that hard. Then again, maybe my experience is different, since I'm usually there to Preorder stuff, pick up stuff I've preordered, and hardly ever buy used games.

Stanger_in_the_Alps My Gamestop was able to score me a copy of a relatively rare DS game. Closest thing to a "bad" experience was them not getting enough copies of a game to meet the preorders, and they still gave me the preorder DLC codes as an apology. They're never pushy with preorders or add-ons, just a simple "would you like X" and they drop the subject if I say no. So, yeah, I have no problem giving them my business (the only issue is that they're in another town about 30 miles away).

I want to know why opened games are sold as "new" there. Recently I tried to return a "new" opened game there (it was open when I bought it), and of course the guy gives me the spiel about how Gamestop does not do refunds for any new games. That's when I directed his attention to the back of the receipt and said "you see how it says I can return new unopened merchandise? This was not sealed when I bought it. But I can tell you I never opened it if it makes you feel better". That's when he looked defeated and said "man I hate her (lady who sold me the game the night before). All she had to do was slip it into one of these plastic wraps". He actually showed me a stack of plastic wrapping from behind the counter.

LOL I remember working at AMC24 (movie theater) and the managers demanding I sell a certain number of these candy bars that were awful. I refused and told customers not to buy them. I literally sold one because the manager coaxed one of my costumers and I kept telling the costumer not to buy it because it was awful, and me and the manager arguing in front of costumer for some time. The costumer came back and thanked me for trying to stop them, apparently it was as awful as I had heard. They threatened to fire me and I told them to just fire me, don't bother making threats because I wasn't going to do anything differently. I gave my two weeks eventually because I felt my break wasn't long enough and for whatever reason they begged me not to quit. Go figure. I also work at UPS, don't even get me started on the bullshit that goes on there.

There are a handful of UPS exposed videos online. I'll give you these stories though, and I'm not making these up. First from personal experience the first time I broke a box it was a cooler with a ham and ice pack in it to keep it from spoiling. I'm freaking out, thinking shit man, am I going to have to pay for this, am I in trouble, am I going to get fired? The supervisor said don't worry about and they sent the wrap up guy to tape it up. He left massive holes in the cooler and tossed it in with the rest of the shit, looked at me and said, no gives a fuck, it's cool man, and the supervisor is standing right there nodding his head. So now the cool air isn't contained, the ham spoils, and that's when I learned they really don't give a fuck. Another one, Nasa was shipping unbreakable glass they use in shuttles through our building. We managed to break it and we didn't even know, they swept it up and threw it away no knowing where the glass came from. Nasa calls looking for it thinking someone stole it or it's been misplaced. Turns out they shipped it without a box thinking oh it'll be fine it's fucking invincible, turns out it's only "unbreakable" (whatever that means) from the front and back, if you apply enough pressure along the edge you can shatter it, and boy did we. I once saw a man take a baby diaper from an open box, and a hersey mini bar from another open box, put the chocolate in the diaper, rub it together and throw it in a random box as a joke and tape it up, so it looked like someone had mailed a used baby diaper, in the box. I have a million of them, a new story every week. I'm not fucking kidding. Our shifts current full time supervisor is a prison convict who was moved to our building because while at his last building a restraining order was put on him by a female employee he was dating because he was cheating on her with an employ at the current building he is "supervising", and the woman at our building apparently attacked him in the parking lot with her keys. No one was fired. I really could just go on and on. I've worked there for 12 years and I have A LOT of stories. I'm just a part timer, I get my benefits, work my part time job, go home, and do art stuff. UPS drivers (most of them any ways) are some of the most miserable people I have ever met. They go on and on about all the money they make but they hate waking up in the morning and going to work, a job where they get anywhere from 8 to 14 hours a day.

So... My horror story. Happened last year, about May. I had purchased my WiiU earlier in the year (AND I LOVE IT!!!!). But. I got through the games I had, and wanted to add a new one to my library (I collect hard copies. I dislike digital, because once it's gone, it's gone). So I went to Gamestop in my area and asked for a new copy of ZombiU. The salesman looks me in the eyes, and says, "They don't make new copies of that anymore. How about you purchase it used, and pre-order this game coming up for the WiiU." So I think to myself, "Fuck, I missed out." And I do so. Not even a week later, I'm over at best buy with my friend, and I see a new on the shelf copy of ZombiU. And, not only did I get a customer account that day with Best Buy, I went and canceled my account at Gamestop, and told them to shove it. I don't deal with people lying to me about things, just to score a sale. I already didn't like Gamestop because they killed Funco Land. So this just killed it for me. I wont be returning there to purchase games.

Lillian Shii This is a second hand story. But a friend of mine used to work there. She told me that she was often sent in back to "dispose of old product". When I asked about that some time later while drinking, she explained that they were destroying old games that nobody was purchasing. Cartridges, CD's, Disks, everything. Didn't matter what they were. Just destroying them so people couldn't scoop them out of the trash behind the store.

I'm not surprised, I knew about a lot of these things I worked there. I've straight up seen DMs (one in particular) sell limited edition copies that were reserved for customers to friends. I've seen a lot of shady sh** while working at GS. Because of that I tend to avoid GS for the most part. Also I would recommend buying a refurbished used console from them. Because GS fixes its own consoles and in doing so they void the manufacturers warranty. Which means you'd have to deal with GS if that system broke...just an FYI

Am not sure I'm fully understanding what you're trying to say but I'll try It all comes down to perspective Its a bad thing if you care bout the manufacturers warrant. So for instance back in the 360 days when Microsoft unveiled their 3yr warranty for the RRoD issue many of the customers who bought GS refurbished consoles were not able to get their consoles serviced because GS broke the warranty when they applied their "fix" and they never signed an agreement with MS granting them permission to do so. So if your console was GS refurbished and you didnt buy an extended warranty w/ GS but it were to suffer from the RRoD after your 30 day warranty expires...well you were SOL Does that help or answer your question?

That's why I only order games from Steam, Amazon, or Best Buy. I worked at Hollywood Video back in 2005 and this was the same shit we had to put up with. Our district manager was some ex con and our store manager always talked about which customers he wanted to fuck. And the store manager did a bunch of shady shit like boost gift card sales fraudulently, selling surplus movies to his buddies for a dollar, just a whole bunch of shit. But Best Buy is actually good. If you want an appliance, TV, laptop, Macbook, etc, Best Buy is a good bet. If you want to buy a new game then they're fine. But I wouldn't buy accessories from them. And nobody at Best Buy pushes warranties other than saying "You want the protection plan?" If you say no, that's it. And honestly, I would buy a 5 year warranty on any large appliance. Refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, etc. When you buy an $800 oven with their shitty 1 year parts only warranty, it's a good idea to spend $100 and buy a 5 year parts and labor warranty. But fucking video game warranties? Kiss my ass.

Yeah, honestly the warranties at best buy are legit. Bought expensive good headphones and when they broke (got them into my washing machine by accident) I've had them replaced no problem. When replacing it I was also fortunate enough to have come in when the headphones were on sale and was able to actually get an extra $15 in whatever merch. Plus no receipt was needed. Sweet deal.

sorry been away. I got the whole package because I am a huge batman fan. The Game Stop Guy was pushing it hard talking about the New Content you get even after the release... I got it... and immediately hated the batmobile parts. [not a racing game kinda guy] and some other things, besides the horribly mishandled REtelling of Jason Todd's story. Boss level fail. It was hugely underwhelming, and they easily could have just told the True story of the Red Hood, which would have been beyond awesome. But there is this weird disturbing thing I have been seeing for a few years now... Game designers [and Movie Directors] think they can tell a better story than THE REAL WRITERS OF THE CHARACTER. You cant. Sorry. ANyway, I finish the main story mode of the game and it has almost NO replay value for me, so I go to the added content [which I paid for.] Oh. its a couple extra missions with red hood. [beat it in literally 30 minutes] Oh and One with Harley Quinn! [dont care.] and Batgirl! [dont care x2] So atleast I have my DLC coming for the season pass right? .... More car skins so you can RACE with them [remember my previous opinion of the racing] THE ONLY good thing was a few of the New Character SKins. One thing. Im not saying it was ALL trash, Im saying for me? My total experience? I was extremely disappointed in it all. I will never fall for the Preorder thing again. In fact I probably wont ever buy a game THE DAY it comes out again. I have decided to let the community be my beta tester. After No Man's Sky and some others? I can wait. [sorry so long lol]

This is hilarious to me cause something strange happened to me in an EB Games store 2 weeks ago. The guy kept pushing on me to try and sell the $3 disk warranty because they can't guarantee the disk will work. It seemed strange to me, but I'm like whatever just some bullshit charge so they can try to make extra money. He just kept saying "well we can't guarantee it will work and remember you only have 15 days to return it if its doesn't work and after 30 days we can't do anything for you". It felt like a drug deal in a way cause I'm like, what do you mean you can't guarantee the disk will work? I mean, okay, a small percentage of the games won't work but the chances are slim. And then he raised his voice as a left "remember only 15 days!" I'm walking out just thinking "wtf?". I kinda felt bad in a way cause he was trying so hard he was so desperate to make just an extra $3.

I usually have good experiences in GameStop and they never try to up-sell me. Except this one time years ago when I went to go pay for my preorder fully off on Bioshock Infinite... I usually talk to them for a bit, but there was a new guy working and I didn't have much time to talk. I hand him my money and he goes "would you want me to add the strategy guide in? It's only $20 more if you buy the game with it" I politely said "I'm good man, this is all my money and I'll just go on KZbin if I get stuck at any parts." You know what he does? When i was like 13 i was buying Shadow of the Colossus for PS2. And back then PS2 games would have like best seller deal of something that made the game like $20. I go in to buy it brand new in the plastic wrap and everything. Guy at the counter asks me if i want a used one for like 17.99. I tell him no, and he starts giving me shit about how i like to overpay for extra plastic instead of buying his second hand disk. Many years later i found out Gamestop gets to keep the $ from selling used games while part of selling a new game goes to the devs. I supported the devs that day FeelsGoodMan.

A lot of businesses do that with money. Pre-orders or layaways. After a certain time, if you never pick up the item, or continue paying on the item, and they can't get ahold of you.... it's considered you forfeit the money.

DAM Buffinator it is technically legal though. A layaway (which technically a pre-order is) is a contract. You agree to pay off item in certain time and pick it up by a certain time. It's no different than a bill in that sense. Such as phone contract or a car payment.
