Eric Butterworth (1916-2003), considered one of the great Unity writers, was the author of hundreds of essays, articles, and numerous best-selling books including Spiritual Economics, Discover the Power Within You, and The Universe is Calling. He was a Unity minister in New York City and conducted services at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center for more than 35 years. For over 50 years he was a brilliant teacher of “practical Christianity”.

I love Dr Butterworth and have been listening to him since he was at Lincoln Center in NYC. It’s too bad that the KZbin algorithm assumes that we are all terrified old people and so inserts ads in that are about the absolute opposite of what this lecture is recommending the listener try to do. For example, “ How to protect yourself from dangerous intruders in your home.” Dr. Butterworth would say, “ My spirit’s home is my mind and my home is my castle. The walls of my castle are impenetrable!”

Luke 10:25-28, Luke 17: 20-21, and John 14:12 are jewels among the recorded teachings of Jesus. They give us a clear glimpse of the religion of Jesus and stand and start contrast to the traditional teachings of the corporate church about Jesus. May I suggest with all respect that everyone ponder and meditate on those verses. Those of you who have read Eric's books will be familiar with his saying that God is not in you as a raisin is in a bun, but rather, God is in you as the ocean is in a wave. This is a key to understanding the religion of Jesus. Many of the teachings of the corporate church focus on duality, dichotomy, us here and God there. That is the whole basis of how most people are taught to pray. At least in western religion. But think about this for a moment if you will... "...behold, the kingdom of God is within you." If the kingdom of God is within you, the end is with you everywhere you go. If God is with you everywhere you go, then God truly exists at the center of your being. So literally, God is like a circle whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere. God is centered in everything and everyone that naturally exists. I will make an exception for things that people have created or ways in which they have perverted the natural world with their machines and pollution. Getting back to God being centered within you... I was thinking on this this week. And it seems to me that if God is centered within me as the ocean exists within a wave, then I am not exactly God, although at the point of attention that is me in this universe, right now, God is expressing in me and through me, and... as me. If God is expressing as me; if I am an expression of God, as the painting is an expression of the painter, then it doesn't really matter what God looks like. Any more than it matters what the painter looks like. The self-active, ego-centered human mind wants to be like God and try to understand every single thing. But if we focus on the idea that God exists literally within us and is expressing literally as us, then the inescapable conclusion at which I arrive, which I think is the whole key to the religion of Jesus, is that each of us is ONE with God. Jesus also said that the kingdom of heaven is "at hand." Jesus also never taught the "sinner's prayer" that the corporate church teaches in one form or another, BTW.

Thank you, Jon. There are some great insights in what you've written. As I see it, God IN us, expressing Himself AS us -- at least as our higher selves -- is us. That is not the same thing as saying that God is us, each one of us. I prefer the idea of panentheism to the rather crude idea of pantheism. That verse Luke 17:21 reads in some translations, "The kingdom of God is at hand," and in others, "The kingdom of God is within." Both are correct. The kingdom of God (referred to in Matthew's gospel as the "kingdom of heaven") is a past, present and future reality all at once. The kingdom has come (but not fully as yet), the kingdom is a reality now, but the kingdom is yet still to come. A difficult concept but it refers, among other things, to the reign or sovereignty of God in our hearts and in the lives of men and women. One technique in New Thought for recognising the present reality of the kingdom is to affirm, "There is only One Presence and One Power active in the universe and in my life now--God, the Good, Omnipotent." Thanks for sharing your insights with us--and may God bless you richly.

I don't want to get too off topic... two of Eric's books, Discover the Power Within You (chapter 17, Did Jesus Teach Reincarnation? )and Life is for Living (final chapter, Life and Death) offer much insight into a subject he rarely talked about, which is the age-old question of what happens when we die. He makes a convincing argument for the possibility of reincarnation in those two chapters. Not that that is the pattern in every case necessarily. If you get those two books, you may find them to be helpful and understanding another point of view on that age-old question.

Thank you for you comment. Yes, I have read those books of his. Many in New Thought, especially in Unity, accept reincarnation as a "working hypothesis". Two of the major groups of Jews in Jesus' times believed in reincarnation. Jesus certainly would have been aware of the idea, which has always been an open belief--an available belief--in Judaism. A couple of Bible stories and verses are suggestive of belief in reincarnation. My view? I'm not sure. I think we are reincarnated into newness of life every day--and every moment of every day. Cheers!

@@drianej Thank you for sharing your wisdom and your point of view. I have a couple of very specific memories that seem to be actual memories from past experiences. I have a good friend who also has the same. Who knows? Butterworth what's the support of the idea? Although he was quick to say that people should not attempt to focus on the past, and he even said that it would be sad to think of himself as a less developed soul and some past life. Again, as he taught, the wave is moving forward toward a distant shore. And I do agree with you in that we are renewed on daily basis. I wrote a book titled, Reflections on Life, it's blue with picture of a seashell on it. In one of the poems in this book, I wrote that salvation is the elevation of consciousness, which is a moment by moment decision as we all know.
