If magic was only about the game and content/vibe didn’t matter, they wouldn’t be making UB sets in the first place. It matters. Ruining the sword and sorcery vibe of magic matters. It matters more than wizards realizes right now and it’s going to come back to bite them.

I feel like mtg has always been more pulp fantasy as compared to high fantasy. I’d argue that gives an allowance to the idea of playing wacky spiderman cards with your dragons. People tend not to roleplay during mtg or imagine these characters actually fighting. People tend to love wacky antics in mtg and this allows for more of that.

And holy shit Batman are some of those Uniques hard to pull. 5 boxes into singles for my store and no Morgana, Ring, Amulet, Merlin, or the 2 lands with 3 threshold, nor more than 1 triome land. love it though I want to buy more. I guess Josh and George do not give a fuck about the people who care about MTG the IP, which might as well be dead now with UB taking over. By WotC showing us they're willing to push out their own world lore for a UB set means that other companies' IP is more important than their own. Guess us boomers and millenials have to go with the flow or quit. Its getting harder to love mtg the IP as they butcher the story and now we get cartoons shoved into gameplay.

What's difficult to understand about this? The significant move into standard (50% of releases) represents a broader embrace of UB into MTG. I.e. MTG === UB. A lot of people don't like UB. That's all there is to it.

If you want to play Magic without Universes Beyond, play Premodern like the rest of us haha I wonder how George would feel if 50% of all new Lorcana cards were Magic IP cards... I get the whinny theme comment but honestly most people play Magic to play in the Magic universe. I still think Magic is really just a game engine but I respect people who want to keep Magic in that fantasy universe and don't want to play against SpongeBob

I feel as though many play standard but it’s more of a secondary format for most. Commander and evergreen formats are not great for magics long term economic success imo.

What was missed in this dicussion was why no one was playing, standard was terrible to play and was slowly turning around. UB will not increase the players as each new release will see new players and then leave. Very few of the standard magic players will play in the new foundations era if the game play is terrible, like it is has been. The other element is that the UB sets will be costed as master set prices.

Day after this announcement I sold my entire collection. I love standard and hate UB and I could comfortably ignore it before but now I can’t. My LGS fired standard every week. If I wanted to play Weiss I’d play Weiss Or the final fantasy TCG.
