A Freezing Wildcamp - Crusader Cup Cooking - Helikon Tex Poncho and Dutch Hooped Bivvy Bag

Hi de hi campers, join me for a cheeky mid-week micro adventure. I head out for a quick overnighter between shifts, cook up a feast in the crusader cup and warm myself beside the fire.

Hi Giles, it always feels a bit odd getting out on a work night, but worth it all the same. I'll probably try it again when the days get a bit longer. The Descattys burners are very good, they have a 50ml capacity so burn for a good 20mins or so and are probably more efficient on fuel than a typical Trangia. The Honey Stove (with Hive expansion kit) is great and I really like that it's made here in ol'' Blighty. The only criticism I have of it is that it can be a bit fiddly to assemble, especially with cold fingers! If I'm honest the UCO firebowl is a little better because you can use larger fuel and spend less time feeding it. Thanks as always for watching Giles 👍

Cheers Lee, always good to get out. The poncho is a good option for when you want to go minimal. It's only 7ft long so is definitely compromised if the weather turns on you. But I think it works particularly well with the Bivvy Bag because you then get the added peace of mind. 👍

Why cook in a Crusader Cup? Nobody does that, by choice. There are lots of pots and pans to cook with, far more efficient than a Crusader Cup. Thanks for sharing.

Why cook in a Crusader Cup? Why not, and there's plenty of folk using them by choice. It's a great cooking pot, I've used mine to cook some lovely meals (if I say so myself!!). I have other pots and pans that I can, and do, use but the Crusader is right up there among my favourites. I think it also makes for a very efficient option for a solo camper, it packs very efficiently, nesting with the awesome Osprey bottle and is nicely sized to make a decent meal for one. Risotto, chilli, Bolognese, curry, stews, rice pudding, porridge, nice cup of tea... it can do it all with aplomb. Go on, give it a try, you won't regret it. Hi m8 can the helicon ponchos protect you enough in a downpour in that configuration in a normal bivvybag tucked up inside? Also what’s the fuel efficiency and speed of burn like in thought small meths burners compared to a trangia burner thx

Hi Mick, yes the poncho is fine in a downpour so long as you pitch it correctly. With a lean-to configuration such as this, it's really important that the back end of the poncho/tarp is pitched into the wind. The Bivvy Bag then becomes your insurance policy should you get any rain blowing in through the open sides of the shelter, I find this is a really good combination. If however the wind changes direction during camp then you'll of course be a bit snookered! The stove, in my opinion, is really efficient and probably slightly more so than a Trangia. I made several brews, cooked a decent Bolognese dinner from scratch as well as heating a pudding and a boil in the bag and burnt through approx 150ml of bio ethanol. The most important thing about this burner though is that it's much safer than a Trangia. That is because it's spill proof and won't leak any fuel if you knock it over - the fibreglass filling absorbs the fuel. Thanks for checking out the video 👍
