Accent is not bad! I took French for 11 years because I'm from Montreal, but I could not become conversationally fluent. My dad at age 38, on the other hand, within about a year, went from a novice in the language to completely fluent (both conversationally and in the written form as well). After my parents divorced, he moved to downtown Montreal which was primarily French speaking, and met his girlfriend, who was French and knew very few English words.
