Nice video Sarge. Beats the daylights out of MRE's for sure :) I used to bake potatoes on a wood stove the morning I would go hunting. I carried them in my jacket pockets for hand warmers. Then, once they cooled off I ate them.Made great hand warmers and a snack, LOL.

I used to have aluminum as well but got away from it....more so because they tend to be cheaply made. Of course there are some hazards as well but my decision was based on the previous. My preference is surely cast iron.....but I use stainless and tin as well

Great vid. Nothing like some salt pork and cornbread to sop the grease up with, lol. Need to make yourself a nice little camp stool or bench one of these days brother. Anyways, really enjoying the series bro. Take care and keep em' coming!

Depends really bro. If its humid out the bag can collect moisture and ruin certain foods for sure. Better off with cotton cloths and such that breath....even with jerky. I actually would never put jerky in a baggy for that reason. Yes....a stomach would work well. Long as it breaths you should be fine. Cant really give a definitive answer on HOW LONG things will last tho.....many variables effecting that.

Depends where I am really. I have a spot that is pretty close to the road/trail at about 100yds. Sometimes I am way out there tho where I usually hunt. I don't find it to be an issue really......at least the small skillets anyway. Wouldn't pack my dutch oven haha

What is your opinion on cooking with aluminum pots & frying pans on a regular basis (weekly or monthly basis)? I carry an old boy scout kit that's all aluminum. Are there any dangers? I've heard different things about only cook with stainless or cast iron, this n' that. So what's your take?

Hey Sarge, just wondering: When is it a problem to use a ziplock bag for your food storage? I know a couple of days shouldn't be a problem with jerky, corn flour, coffee, nut flour, whatever- but how long would you say it's good to use? Also, I was wondering if using a stomach knotted off would work for things like that? Is it breathable enough for jerky & such? I remember hearing about the Mongols using that for borts (which might be a survival food worth looking into- by-the-way).

Thanks, Sarge. Don't have an opportunity to experiment with all this, yet. I figure I'll stock up on knowledge & then I'll be able to "assemble" it into a skill when I have the chance. Good to know that the stomach is breathable, though- that one's been bothering me. P.S.- You ever hear of paleoplanet? It's a real good forum for primitive skills.

I had my first taste of maple syrup when I was a teenager attending a track and field camp in upstate New York. I was used to the log cabin stuff so I found the taste to be awful.Then I realized that,being in New England,this was the real Ma-coy. So I made it a point to have it with my pancakes every morning anyway.I quickly acquired a taste for it and now I sorely miss it. It's not as sweet which makes it a much healthier choice and a tastier one too.

One other thing about the salt I learned this year is the importance of salt. 4 days in the woods with little water, no food, and no salt is no bueno for the body. Uric acid levels spike. I _ALWAYS_ have salt in my pack now.

Salt pork really heavy on the fat. Consider as an alternative your supermarket deli bacon!! More flavor and leaner!!
@spiritpath110 жыл бұрын
Salt pork is like very "fatty bacon" (usually unsliced). Use it to flavor cooked greens, or dried beans (any kind of dried beans). Can also "fry it" too. Depending on what part of the country you live in it can be called "fat back", my grandmother used to call it "strickneen" (this is probably not the spelling but it is phonetically spelled).She was from Alabama, Georgia area. Back in the day you saved any good meat for Sunday dinner or company and ate mostly veggies (in the south) and a lot of Potatoes in the north and dried beans any time.
