I harvested 20 out of 25 planted garlic bulbs and decent sized and beautiful, but during curing , was too hot and humid and stormy so they started to rot 😢 I managed to salvage about a third of all the cloves so not a total loss. But now it's the first year in several years I don't have any to plant 😕 anyways, I enjoyed watching you and your mum harvesting and planting things 😊❤ 🍻 to hoping for a better growing season next year

Hi Jess, I think the abundance of rain was the problem with the garlic, even in pots, like with beans, it just rots off. I had a few, but miniscule, most just did not appreciate the constant wet environment.

Same here on the garlic and onion front. My garlic had bulbs no bigger than a 50p in diameter and I got maybe 5 or 6 decent (ish) sized onions, the rest were only just bigger than onion sets. I'm putting it down to the weather as they were in a new raised bed with new compost. On the plus side though, I now have 8 jars of pickled onions in the kitchen cupboard! 🤷‍♀There's always next year.😉

Hi Jessie and your Mum, you are so right in respect of slugs, they are ninja size too! What a shame about the garlic, maybe try just one pot with only boought in compost. I have problems with rust for garlic & leeks but, I still grow them every year and freeze, at least you know they are organic. Lovely carrots, nice harvest of veg for tea. It has been a very slow year for growing, been driving ne mad, plants being munched, resowing and mun hed again, the list is endless but, we are now harvesting too & the rain seems to be not as often too. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊

Hi Jessie I have 2 experiments for you to try...(1) Regarding slugs. Can you get your hands on some spent coffee grounds (a lot)? I have a coffee roasting business around the corner and they give them away for free. Very large garbage bags full too. I sprinkle them in my flower garden beds and around my strawberries. I havent seen slugs or their slimy tracks for over a year. They also deter felines from using the beds as litter boxes. It is only a deterrent and nothing is harmed plus it feeds the soil with nitrogen. You can try putting it around the perimeter of your greenhouse, nice & thick. But first find their hiding place inside otherwise youll trap them inside & they'll do more damage. Experiment (2) Garlic...A few years ago I i was on the fence about growing garlic. In the middle of winter i decided to grow it. I put some potting soil in a 3" deep container (no holes needed), buried some cloves, gave it a drink & a lid and put it in the back of the fridge until Spring. That gave them the cold & darkness they needed to start making roots but they didnt sprout because there was no sunlight. It worked out quite well. I planted in my raised beds as soon as it warmed just a bit. As rainy as Spring had been almost everywhere, growing almost anything was a challenge. You might also consider trying to grow them in the greenhouse or poly tunnel where it doesn't get so wet. Good luck, hope you get some garlic next year. Oh, i forgot, you could try growing a softneck variety which gets planted in spring, but still under cover, because you know, rain happens.

Commiserations on the garlic -- mine was absolutely rubbish this year too, after a bumper harvest last year. Some of it was looking okay-ish in around March but I think the cool wet weather after that did for it. Another allotment person grew her onions inside the greenhouse over the winter and has had an impressive yield so I'm planning on trying that with some of my autumn-sowing garlic this year.

It's been a difficult vegetable growing year. Broad beans grew really well, but hardly any usable beans. I found I had white rot in my garden, it was the first year of growing veg in the garden, having given up my allotment due to health issues. So onions and garlic was a disaster, but that's gardening. Another very good video. Keep safe and keep well.

My autumn garlic was also crap this year it's been a long time since I've experienced that but I put it down to the fact we had such a warm and wet winter just not cold enough to induce the dividing process last winter I can only remember 3 heavy frost days and certainly no frozen ground only knee deep in wet mud, my saviour might be my elephant garlic fingers crossed ,might try the fridge method for this autumn s garlic before planting as a precaution the winter to come

Have you tried planting your garlic in the fall or did you (I don't remember)? In NA, our garlic is planted in fall and vernalized over winter as it needs that cold weather treatment to grow nice heads. I'm not sure what UK gardens do....don't remember Charles Dowding saying! LOL You would probably want to control the moisture so under a waterproof structure that won't get hot or the greenhouse or polytunnel might be better than leaving them exposed to excessive rain. They will just establish good root foundation over winter. Planting large bulbs gives you large heads. I always save my biggest heads to plant the cloves in the fall for next years harvest. I hope my thoughts help. And 31C IS boiling hot! LOL We have been at 35-37C over the last 10 days, now with wildfire smoke. :( Good work on your 1 day in the garden!

I was a bit disappointed with my garlic. It's my first year growing garlic and I had 2 or 3 supermarket sized bulbs and the rest were much smaller. But seeing your harvest has made me appreciate mine. I haven't had any french beans yet though, so you've beat me on that. Hopefully in the next week I'll have some because french beans are my favourite veg and I've been worried for weeks. My first sowings failed and my second have been really slow. Is it too late to sow Cavolo Nero by the way? I tried a sowing a month ago but didn't get any germination. I've got loads of curly dwarf and scarlet curly so they will have to do if it's too late now.

Just ordered, again, more seeds all because the green onions I have now germinates spotty lots in some cells nothing in others.😢. My habanero from the nursery is gigantic. It is dwarfing the ones I’ve grown. What’s with that? Unusual rainy weather here in Texas so garden is a jungle. Next month, time to think of fall/winter garden.

Love that music you played while harvesting, it's sweet and a little melancholy and just lovely, and for some reason it filled me with love for Mother Earth and her generous bounty.
