Love your idea about how to handle the cookery videos. Thats how I found your channel - I was searching for a way to deal with a load of Chard and broad beans and stumbled across you :) Really looking forawards to seeing the cookery stuff come back and totally agree with how you are dealing with it by having a little sneak peak in the vlog then dive into deeper detail in a separate video for those who are interested. Ive also fallen into the omg ive got way too much of this produce trap in previous years so having more inspiration will be great......ive still got a ton of french beans blanched and frozen from last year to the point where i only grew 5 plants this year! My gardens been shockingly bad this year though and not very productive or things have gone from nope not doing anything to boom ive bolted in a matter of days - silly weather grrr or as you have slug armageddon double grrr . Lets hope next year is a bit easier!

I don't know if someone has already mentioned this, but I had to stop using Blood, Fish & Bone on my allotment as the foxes and badgers could smell it, and so they were digging in the beds as it smelt to them like something tasty had died, being their nature. They couldn't find anything so there furious digging would be widespread wherever I'd used B,F&B. I just used compost with seaweed based fertiliser now, they're not keen on seaweed and I've not had the problem since.

Very interested in the kitchen videos! This salad looks soooooo elegant and special, and EXPENSIVE, I might add, if I ordered it in a fine restaurant. Just can’t get that kind of food in a Taco Bell or McDonalds. Meanwhile, I’ve bought giant noodle shells to be stuffed! Would never have bothered without your video, but you made it look fantastic, Jessie. tysm

Slugs have been the worst this year than I can remember, They've decimated so many of my vegetables that I feel all the hard work I put into sowing these seeds back in January /February on heat mats & under grow lights has been a bit of a waste of my efforts sadly. I was up around dawn this morning because I couldn't sleep with these warm nights & went into the garden & greenhouses & collected literally dozens of the blighters off my plants.

Beer traps - put them out preemptively about a week before you plant out. You will never send them extinct, but beer traps at least let your plants get big enough to out grow any later damage. It's a pretty gnarly business cleaning them out too, but worth it. Also a cold frame/greenhouse lets you grow your seedlings a lot bigger so they too can resist a minor onslaught. Even then, there will be casualties.

Jessie, I'm feeling so badly for you about your plants and the badger. Have you tried heavily sprinkling cayenne pepper all around the bed? It sometimes helps with critters here. Ohhh I just looked up your beef and onion tree and it looks like it gets VERY BIG. It spreads by suckers and seeds. Will it be invasive, do you think? Your harvest looked so lovely in the basket. Battery operated electric fence around beds to stop badgers? I have seen them used to stop bears getting into gardens/chicken coops on videos. Gives them a little shock and they respect the wire after that. We use electric fencing on the farm, even when the power is off they respect the fences. I laughed so hard when I saw our huge Hereford bull do an enormous jump over a electric wire lying on the ground not connected!😅

Well...Toona sinensis. It is a deciduous tree growing to 25 metres (82 ft) tall with a trunk up to 70 cm diameter. The bark is brown, smooth on young trees, becoming scaly to shaggy on old trees. The young leaves of T. sinensis are extensively used as a vegetable in Chinese cuisine; they have a floral, yet onion-like flavor, attributed to volatile organosulfur compounds.[12] Plants with red young leaves are considered of better flavour than those where the young leaves are green.[4][13][14] In China and Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, the young leaves of Toona sinensis or commonly known as Chinese Mahogany is used to make Toona paste, which is used as a condiment to serve with plain rice porridge as breakfast and simple meals, or to enhance the flavour of a dish or soup. Common dishes made with Toona paste are Chinese Mahogany fried rice, Chinese Mahogany beancurd, and Chinese Mahogany mushroom soup. The leaves contain Vitamin E, and high amounts of iron, calcium and chlorophyll. Sounds like a tree I would like to have in my fairly big garden. ;)

How are your Jinxy beans? Mine are now picking…a few as “French “ beans, a few as green podded beans…and leaving most for drying for the winter…🤓 Jinxy

Jessie , I don't know if you already know how medicinal plantain is. The little flower head is where physillium husks come from to help go #2 . Also the leaves can be used dried in tea for acid reflux, Gerd and upper respiratory problems. If you get stung or bite you can pick a leaf, chew it and put it directly on the spot and it will take away the itching and some pain. I use all of it when I wild harvest it.

❤ #1 Motion activated solar lights - they deter wildlife in my gardens. #2 Thank you for showing us how to eat what we grow! I grew okra this year and haven’t eaten any. #3 Where’s that night camera? I’m curious if you can get the badger on camera. #4 Drone? Even if it’s winter I’d love to see what your area looks like from above to get a better area of what plots look like since I don’t have anything like that by me. #5 THANK YOU for every video! Even my husband says “It’s Tuesday. Put Jessie on!” 😂

The motion lights are a bit of an issue because we have some flats near by and it they see lights on in the allotment at night they call the council/police... very annoying if you've forgotten something and need to pop back up with a torch!! I am trying to catch the badger on the camera but they re proving elusive! until i don't set it up of course and they they show up hahah! I do have a drone! I'm not very good at flying it, and i can only do so when the school kids aren't around! :D I am hoping to get some higher up footage soon though, now they are on summer holidays!

It´s property of the simulation, Jessie. You have to do the work immediately you check they´re ready to harvest. Otherwise simulation will ruin it. I´m now taking my Stevia leafs for drying for winter. I had two plants, and on other one is 50% leaves gone. But i´ll manage.

Its very tempting to give up on it!! They are keen devourers of the beetroot and sweet corn here too... Hahha, no, i don't teach! I used to teach people how to make moulds for glass casting/bronze casting and slip casting. But thats all behind me now hahaha!

2/3s of my life seems to be bean picking? Same here. For one of my neighbours at the alotment, it is about 10/3s of their life. We're filling the fridges of pretty anyone we know. Handing them out at the pub is a good idea.

Have you thought it could be the compost that they are attracted to ?? When we have compost that contains a lot of municipal green waste my dog Bruce will actually eat it out of the bed......... Just something to ponder while pottering..

Poor little veggies. 😢 sounds like there’s been a massacre at plot 37. Pesky wild life!! I’m so luck we don’t have foxes, badgers or even rabbits on our site. Just plain out pigeons and slimey critters is enough for me to cope with. Hope you get the trail footage though. Will be interesting if nothing else. Look forward to the cooking episodes I’m one of those who never knows what to do with stuff so just leave in freezer. Hope they survive the night x

I believe you actually attract even more those badgers into those freshly mulched beds because of the fertiliser (bone fish and blood), try to switch to something else for an experiment (like chicken or horse manure pellets, seeweed,… ). Those little hungry fluffy cute plant diggers will dig somewhere else.
@JessieatPlot37
@JessieatPlot37 6 ай бұрын
yes, the mulch does attract them but i've not noticed a difference in years when i have/have not used blood fish and bone. They do go crazy for chicken manure pellets though so i definitely know i can't use those!!
