As an American, having experienced university life in Taiwan has left me with a million things I want to share! That's a bit too many, so for this video I'm just focusing on differences between campuses. Both have their pros and cons (I hate it when people try stealing my spot...), but is there really one that has the obvious advantage?
(I'm speaking in English for this video in hopes of reaching more audience members outside of Taiwan. Whether or not this bothers you, you're welcome to share with me in the comments.)
0:45 food prices
1:19 campus dogs
1:59 strangers on campus
2:42 entertainment
2:54 college sports
3:37 facilities
4:55 textbook prices
5:23 student dorms & apartments
6:24 space
P.S. I've reached 50k subscribers! Thanks so much for your support❤️

very interesting take! Some are things i've never thought of. About the universities in the US, it also depends on where it's located in. Some are located in urban areas, and those would probably be more similar to the ones in Taiwan. I've also spent some years studying in Europe. and that's a whole different story.

Tristan - since you brought up shower, I'd share one major difference between US and Taiwan colleges. I was totally shocked about the open shower in my college gym my first week in the US. Never seen so many beautiful birthday suits for sure. :) It's more conservative in Taiwan in that regard.

I can see poor landscaping in this video which I also observed when I visited Taiwan. Nice lawns are rarely seen there. It seems no one ever bothered to point that out. Tristan, you can probably tell the board of your school and make that university a model for Taiwan.

NTU main campus is the back ground, I worked there in the old Engineering Building in 1965 school year. The general classroom areas are nice to watch too. I never had a meal as you shown here beside eating occasionally at the staff dinning room. Your meal did not come with a soup, I had soup free from a large aluminum can with traces of vegetable leaves! My time $1.67 dollars could last for 4 meals, with lot of imported rice from Vietnam or Thailand, that rice costed much less in Taiwan than home grown at that time. Time changed to have foreign students there, my time there was only a few dark hair girls in the engineering school, let alone any golden hair beauty in the campus!

但在美國,sports is larger than life.

In the US University, because I was resident in the state, the tuition was OK for me. However, the text books were truly expensive!!! At my time about 40 years ago, each text book was $70-100 dollars, and many classes had several text books!!! I generally got used books and sold the books back to school afterwards. When my grandniece came to US as an exchange student, I found the Chinese students were much more frugal than us Taiwanese!!! They got the text books, copied it, then returned it. I was speachless.

Great Comparisons, we do have a movement at my institution (South Texas College) to check OER materials from the University of Minnesota to see if we can use the FREE textbooks that are there for courses, we have one program called competency based that is built entirely with these materials and a very different conceptualization of engagement in learning and earning the degree. *my daughter goes to Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches Texas (Texas's oldest University), and I guess we are in the donut hole, so it seems very expensive to us. Back when she was 16 we sent her to an NTNU Amazing Formosa program for three weeks, and put her on the plane in Houston for the direct flight. Yes, Textbooks are expensive, even the series we usually end up adopting where cost is one of our criteria they still end up in the $70-90 dollar range each, and even though that publisher has an all for $120 digital deal, it is still a crazy wild challenge. Keep up your videos!

Go, Badger go! Here in WI, I would say that you don’t need a all you can eat to get full. Price of 10 USD meal is enough (Bento, small pizza, or taco bowl). Although the price is about 3 times more than the foods in Taiwan, the stipend we get is also about 3 times more. Thus, I would say that the same proportion of money is spent on foods, but the quality of foods is lower. Leasing is much more expensive...... 700 USD per month is the cheapest studio I can find in the campus area. University sport event is really one of the important events for the city. Before the pandemic, people drive 2 hours to come for tail gating every American football game. I thought it was a parade the first time I saw it.

They used to have nice lotus ponds, but now Taiwan Normal University built new buildings on my favorite pond!!! Btw, the pigeons' shit at Taiwan Normal University right outside of the library are quite famous. It was known at my time, if the pigeon there shit on you, you would win the lottery.

Taiwan is the top two safest countries in the world, so people feel more comfortable and safe to hangout in campus, even at night. We go to school to do the exercise or do our steps after work and it is very common for most of people there and people bring kids to get their energy out at night which it is not common in US. Lol.

Nebraska got a good tradition in college sports!! Could you do an episode that introduces a bit of the life of being a Husker? Like how is the game-day vibe on campus? Either football or basketball will be fine!!

I’d love to! I wish I got more footage of Husker football games while I was still there, pre-pandemic. Husker fans are also known for good sportsmanship, and I’m proud of that.

@@yakitorisutan Great, awesome. You know Omaha, Nebraska, is the home of the college baseball world series. Something relating to baseball might is an excellent potential topic for the Taiwanese in the future. Otherwise, I think talking about the sports culture in the us will be interesting too, I.e., Big Ten NCAA. You know it's March is here and NCAA tournament is a big deal across the college campuses.

The main reason why universities in the states have better facilities is bc of its extremely expensive tuition. With that kind of expense, you can live in a 5 star hotel equipped with similar facilities nearby the university. Tuition in the states is outrageous, too many people have to take a loan to get a bachelor degree. In Taiwan, universities spend money on equipping students to get the degree with affordable tuition so they don't need to worry about paying back the loans. In terms of sports and recreation, there are plenty of extracurricular activities outside of campus that are a lot more versatile and affordable than the states. Taiwan runs its universities like NGO, while US runs its universities like corporations. This is the biggest difference and people need to decide whether education is an universal right of people, or a commodity to profit.
