Yes, there's supposed to be another one. :) In the meantime, if you want more Sherlock content, Downey's Marvel colleague Benedict Cumberbatch did an excellent TV series in the UK called Sherlock, and at the same time, Jonny Lee Miller also did a Sherlock TV series in the USA called Elementary; in this series, Watson is played by a woman, Lucy Liu. The two shows are very different from each other, but I highly enjoyed both of them when they originally aired. Since that was only 10 or so years ago, you may have already seen them yourself, but if not, I recommend one and/or both to you. :)

Whilst the film doesn't follow the original books, there's some lovely nods to the books. When Arthur Conan Doyle tired of writing Sherlock Holmes stories he killed him off by having him fight Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, so for those in the know, when Mycroft mentions the location of the peace summit, the story progression from there on is almost an inevitability.

The final fight is so ironic in a way: For all their intelligence, neither Sherlock or Moriarty could have predicted that Watson would walk through the door in the middle of their fight. So in reality, it would have been 2 vs 1 and Sherlock/Watson would have won if the fight had actually taken place.

The forest scene may be the finest action sequence of last decade, truly Richie at the top of his game. Even though it's set in 1891, the artillery and machine guns are straight out of The Great War, like Moriarty prophetically envisioned.

In the books, Moriarty was Holmes' absolute equal and could only be degeated at the cost of his own life. Problem is, the royal family were fans and Arthur Conan Doyle was obliged to find a way to bring him back to life.

Thanks for reacting to this movie, Jen! This one was closer storywise to the classic Holmes canon than the first one in some ways, not just in bringing in Moriarty as a central villain (which, other than his implied combat prowess, is one of the most faithful representations of the canonical character), but also the international intrigue plotline, reminiscent of a few in the canon which involved Mycroft (he was also involved in helping Sherlock take down Moriarty's gang). One of the most well known stories, "His Last Bow", featured Holmes and Watson thwarting a German spy on the eve of World War I. There's a few more cheeky references as well, like mentioning Watson's middle name as Hamish, which comes from his middle initial in the canon being H but even though it was never actually revealed what that stood for, a fan interpretation is that it is meant to be Hamish, the Gaelic-anglicized form of James, as some stories mistakenly gave his first name as James instead of John. Moriarty only appears in one canonical story, "The Final Problem", also having a background role in the last of the novels, _The Valley of Fear_ , which is set before that when he was still alive. In these stories Moriarty was portrayed as a master crime boss who expertly concealed his true self by outwardly pretending to be a kind, avuncular math teacher, which as in the film contrasts sharply with when he talk to Holmes and essentially threatens to kill him if he doesn't back off from interfering with his criminal dealings. He was conceived to be Holmes' match and ultimate foe because Arthur Conan Doyle was tired of writing the character and wanted to kill him off (though increasingly exorbitant monetary offers from publishers as well as his own mother's insistence eventually made him bring him back); Holmes nicknamed him "the Napoleon of crime", a title which he inherited from the master criminal Adam Worth, one of the real-life contemporary figures Moriarty was based on. Just like in the movie, Moriarty's weakness in his final battle with Holmes was his rage. Another detail from the canon which is reflected in the movie is that in the former of those stories, Watson decides to emulate Holmes' deductive methods to figure out what happened during Holmes and Moriarty's final confrontation at Reichenbach even though he arrives after the fact, just as film!Watson does the same to identify the right man at the summit. I too have been itching for what at this point would probably be the closing chapter of a trilogy for these films; there's been rumors of a third film in various stages of development for quite a few years, and that the plot might involve Professor Challenger, another Conan Doyle character, possibly as a villain or supporting anti-hero. There's no shortage of literary material with which to make another cool story so I hope we get to see it happen one day with RDJ still keen on the role.

The music used when Holmes is riding the donkey was actually written by Ennio Morricone and was used as the main theme to the Clint Eastwood western Two Mules for Sister Sara. They are supposed to be working on a third Sherlock Holmes movie but unfortunately the third one will not be directed by Guy Ritchie. I believe it is being directed by Dexter Fletcher, a British character actor who switched careers to become a director.

Years ago while working for Olan Mills, I caught the swine flu and though I broke my fever after one rough day, I quarantined for a week. Sat on my porch and read the entire Sir Arthur Colin Doyle works on Holmes. The films didn't follow the books but the falls was right out of the books. Holmes died but later Sir Arthur chose to bring him back as people wanted more. First Holmes stayed in the shadows for an extended time before revealing himself. Much like bond in you only live twice later let people believe he was dead while continued his work.

Fantastic reaction, Jen!!! This one is my favorite of the RDJ Sherlock films. Hans Zimmer gave me chills throughout the entire movie. He's in the top 3 of my favorite film composers: Bernard Herrmann, Georges Auric and Hans Zimmer. Noomi Rapace, who played Madam Simza, is the ex-wife of Ola Rapace, who played the assassin, who fell to his death in Shanghai without giving Bond the name, in Skyfall (2012).

34:53 It is insinuated several times in the books that if Holmes had decided to become a criminal instead of a detective he would have been the best at it, which is what Moriarty was. Moriarty was comparable to Holmes in his mental ability but with a different personality, he was amoral, cold and calculating. So yeah, in the books it can be argued that they are supposed to be equally smart, given that Holmes had to resign himself to take very drastic measures in order to take Moriarty down, which is something he didn't need to do in his other cases. He literally had to die to kill Moriarty, similar to the way he "dies" in this film, but for real. That was supposed to be the end for the character, but after his death the author was surprised to see the strong reaction of the readers. They were angry, and they started sending the author letters non stop and bothering him about it, and many of them in protest also cancelled their suscriptions to the magazine that published the stories (20.000 cancellations) so eventually the author gave up and brought the character back.

Not sure how many know this, but there has been a centuries-long battle of spies, assassins, and subterfuge between the British Empire and the Russian Empire, and it continues to this day. The British called it "the Great Game," while the Russians called it "the Tournament of Shadows." Hence the subtitle for this movie, which is a combination of the two: "A Game of Shadows." FWIW, seeing RDJ in makeup on the train, it occurred to me he might be an interesting choice to play the Joker at some point.

A really good second act for RDJ as whoever this brilliant detective is. I love it. With our hero not enjoying the companionship of horses, an Icelandic pony was the next best thing to a burro. Great musical tribute to TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARAH? Sad that they chose to kill, as Holmes referred to her, "the woman," but you know sometimes we get what we don't want. I love how Mary understands the relationship between her husband and his besty. While originally, Sherlock only had a brother, there are other projects that decided the family wasn't big enough. There are at least two sisters who have had opportunities and Gene Wilder. THE ADVENTURE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES' SMARTER BROTHER. My Cocaine has a nice spoof as well. WITHOUT A CLUE. He works for the brilliant Dr Watson. Nuff said

batman is portrayed in the comics as "the world's greatest detective". he has no super powers so he has to make up the deficit with just human strength and everything else is pure wit. and i think guy ritchie directing a batman like this would have been perfect. alas, can't really copy it from one franchise to the other but the way that ritchie shows how dire situations were secretly prepared ahead of time by a very smart dude would have been perfect for batman movies.

In the books, there really wasn't much of a mention of Moriarty. he only really appeared in the one story that ended at the falls. Doyle had grown tired of the character and decided to kill him off. Years passed and fans made it clear they were not happy, so he wrote some "prequels," the most famous which is The Hound of the Baskervilles. If they do a third one, and it's not Hound, there will be riots. Eventually, Holmes did return and a few new stories were published. Then they skipped a huge block of time and resumed after World War 1, with Watson retired and Holmes living in the country keeping bees. BTW, I'm amazed at the number of times you reference a Bond movie when you see something in another film. Especially since you've only seen them once, maybe twice if you do your own edits. So, I'm surprised you missed Mycrofts own oxygen supply was very similar to the small canister Bond had in Thunderball when he escaped from the swimming pool full of sharks.

What I would've really like to have seen is a followup with Rachel McAdams taking on the Holmes-vision. That's a hero movie I'd love to see.

I call these films "Steampunk Holmes." The best thing about this second one is that they killed off Rachel McAdams character almost immediately. She was so entirely miscast as Irene Adler it was painful to watch, and I really like Rachel McAdams. She was marvelous in _Slings and Arrows_ (a great Canadian series). And, yes, I'm a Holmes purist. You really should watch the Granada series from the 80s, starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes. They are pretty direct adaptations of the original stories, and Brett captures perfectly the character of Holmes as Conan Doyle wrote him.

I totally agree. RIP Jeremy Brett, the best played Holmes ever. As a child I read the ALL the stories. When I saw my first film with Basil Rathbone he fit my imagination very well, although Watson was a bit older than I had pictured him (Nigel Bruce) and a bit less serious. When the Granada series came along with Jeremy Brett it was like I could see into my own imagination. It exactly matched every detail to perfection. Sad that he passed before being able to complete the entire works, but grateful for the ones that made it to film. They are nearly word perfect to the originals. If you are going to take from the classics, that's how it should be done. I learned a lot from Doyle through Holmes. A bit of history, a little about critical thinking, the importance of details, cocaine and opium usage and a bit of British slang as well.

If you look carefully in the background, you can actually see Sherlock hiding with the camouflage suit in the background in the scene at Baker Street

17:14 he shot the guy holding an unlocked grenade and it flew into the bag with the other grenades. So no, that wasn‘t Sherlock‘s doing but Watson‘s

Hello Jen. Very enjoyable. May I suggest for the next Guy Ritchie film, and in lieu of the sad loss of the great David McCallum, I think it would be fitting for you to watch his remake film of the 1960’s television show, the Man From UNCLE. It stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. Definitely worth a watch. And very very stylish.

"He's been hooked!" Reminded me of a fun thing I heard as a kid, say this out loud with your best Irish accent; "Whale Oil Beef Hooked". Seemed funnier at the time

Definitely could have a third movie to round out the Sherlock Holmes movies w/ the ending. You should look up The Great Mouse Detective which is a more kid friendly version but animated, one of my favorites as a kid.

I would recommend the BBC Sherlock series from a few years ago, Jen. 3 short seasons, but alot of fun following updated versions of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Very well done I thought and AWESOME cast. Noomi Rspace from PROMETHEUS, The girl with the dragon tattoo, and a movie you would enjoy " What Happened To Monday". She is one of those actors that you believe their performance. Oh and Kelly Reilly recently of the series YELLOWSTONE. Peace 🕊️☮️

You might enjoy the TV series "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" from 1984. It's not action based, it's more mystery.. as you would expect from Sherlock Holmes!

If you are a big fan of Guy Ritchie's action directing, you should really check out some of Mathew Vaughn's films, especially KICKASS from 2010- probably the greatest superhero movie ever made
